PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT/ ENGAGEMENT Over the last couple of weeks we have had several events and acvies which involved parents, ex-students and the school working together. One of the highlights of the year 7 schooling is the Pedal Prix. Once again, this was not only a very successful day for the students (see students’ report) but a great opportunity for the parents, students and staff to work together. A huge thank you to all parents who supported the event and special thanks to Bill Lokan for all his work on the day and in the lead up - countless hours of dedicaon to the school. Thanks also to John Grbin who assisted on the day. Last week I was able to aend the P&F night meeng where the group set some goals for the remainder of the year, made decisions regarding the canteen and discussed the implementaon of a three-year rotaonal cycle of Dad’s Day/Grandparents’ Day/ Mother’s Day acvies. We also discussed various forms of communicaon and as a result alteraons will be made to the school website. The P&F also decided, aſter much research, to upgrade their coffee machine. The meeng was a great opportunity for the P&F members to raise and discuss issues, put forward recommendaons and make decisions. Another great opportunity for parental engagement with the school. I also had the opportunity last week to aend a Fete meeng. The Fete provides an opportunity to achieve several goals: Parish & school cooperaon, raising much needed funds for the school and parish, promoon of the school and parish in the wider community, providing an entertaining and enjoyable experience for the wider community, parent/school cooperaon and is one of the highlights of the students’ calendar year. Each year we allocate classes to a Fete stall and informaon about this went home in the last newsleer. We will connue to look for ways to involve you in this great school/parish acvity. Keep your eyes peeled as regular notes will be going home as well as updates in each newsleer. If you have any suggesons to further improve this acvity, please don’t hesitate to contact the Fete convenors (Ally Mason & Bernie Masterman) and stall holders. Another example of great parent leadership and engagement is our “Kids Can Cook” program which this year involves Year 5 students being able to take part in cooking and safe food handling. An amazing program. Sincere thanks to Mel Michael & Rachael Bell who are providing an outstanding opportunity for our students. As an addion to our LOTE Program (Japanese) some of our families have taken up the opportunity to host Japanese exchange students. This is not only a very generous offer by our parents and builds on a long exisng program but also provides a huge extension to the cultural understanding and awareness that is delivered through our LOTE program. SHaDeYou may have noticed that the major shade structure has been taken down. Unfortunately the shade was damaged during recent storms and needs repair (which insurance will cover). Sometimes it isn’t until you lose something that you appreciate how great an area this is. We look forward to the shade being reinstalled in approx. 4 weeks’ time. Please note, that we may not hold line-up if there is inclement weather.

an InvItatIon to all tHe DaDS oF St JoSePH’S SCHool

Dear Dads,

On behalf of the staff of our school I am delighted to invite you to what I believe will be one of the most significant school events of the year - Dad’s Day 2016, to be held on Friday September 2nd.

Here at St Joseph’s School we have amazing support from our families - camps, sports days, swimming carnivals, Sacrament Programs, picnics etc. Why then do we rate Dad’s Day so highly?

Research indicates that the father figure’s influence on literacy and numeracy is vital for encouraging, engaging and ultimately influencing the learning outcomes of their children.

- Do your children see you read? - Do you listen to them reading? - Are you invovled in the learning process of your children?

Do you want to know more? Come and join us for Dad’s Day 2016.

If you are unable to attend, you have the option to invite another ‘significant male’ in your children’s lives (e.g. grand-dads, uncles, brothers etc) to attend in your place.

We understand that taking time out of work may be an inconvenience, but having explored many alternative options, we are convinced that this day will have the most impact. And after all, what we are about is making an impact on your children!

If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact either me or John Grbin.

SaInt marY oF tHe CroSS maCkIlloP SolemnItY, 8 aUgUStOn Monday 8 August the whole school came together to share Mass to reflect on the life and works of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Following the Mass each buddy class group undertook an action in the community which demonstrated the call of Mary MacKillop. Buddy class activities included: thanking our local business for the work they do in our community by presenting them with biscuits to say thank you; raising money for those less fortunate than us in an orphanage in Bali; singing to the residents of Carinya to help spread joy; donating books that can be enjoyed by others whilst waiting at appointments at such places as the doctors and dentist and making ‘Get Well’ cards for those who are unwell in our community. Thank you to the parents who helped with making this such a special day in our school and local community.

CarInYa lItUrgY - reCePtIon WHIttall16 aUgUSt, 10amOn Tuesday 16 August the Reception Whittall class will be taking part in a liturgy at Carinya at 10am. This is a special way that as a school we are able to reach out to the elderly in our community and a fantastic opportunity for our students to interact and bring joy and faith to the residents of Carinya. Any parents who would like to attend are more than welcome.

Sr Pat keane, 16 aUgUStOn 16 August we are fortunate to have Sr Pat Keane coming in to talk to the students about the life of Mary MacKillop, in this the 150 year of the ‘Sisters of St Joseph’ who were founded by Mary MacKillop.

WHole SCHool WelCome/leaD maSS, 19 aUgUStOn Friday 19 August a whole school Mass will be held to welcome our new Reception students and to induct our new LEAD members for Semester Two. reCePtIon ClaSS lItUrgY, 24 aUgUStOn Wednesday 24 August the Reception Whittall class will hold a Liturgy in their classroom at 9am. This liturgy is a special celebration and provides a fantastic opportunity for the parents and Grandparents from this class to come together to share faith with their children. The children love to share what they have been learning about the Catholic faith. It would be really beneficial for these children to have at least one family member attend this celebration to support them in their faith development.

relIgIoUS eDUCatIonnatIonal voCatIonS Week 6/7 AUGUST - 13/14 AUGUST (cont..)The first Sunday, 6/7 August, is centered on the fact that each person is called into the fullness of life by God. Put more explicitly in the Christian context, that each Baptized Christian is called by God and has a unique vocation to be another Christ, to holiness of life and to a mission in the world. The focus this Sunday is on all vocations within the Church for the sake of God’s Kingdom in the world. And so we acknowledge the vocations of all the Baptized and explicitly pray for Marriage and Family Life, the Single Life, and the call to Ecclesial Ministry in the Church.

The Second Sunday of National Vocations Awareness Week , 13/14 August, concentrates on the vocations of Priesthood, Diaconate (Decon) and the Consecrated Life.

As part of the week there will be a Vocations Prayer Vigil beginning with the 5.45pm Mass at St Francis Cathedral, Adelaide, on Friday August 12 and continuing with Adoration and Benediction until 7.30pm and concluding with supper.

For further ideas on vocations please refer to the website of the Catholic Vocations Ministry of Australia at www.catholicozvocations.org.au

PraYer For voCatIonSGod, I know you love me and are calling me to Choose Life! But sometimes I am overwhelmed by the thought of my future. It’s scary!

Help me to listen to your call – in all the ways you speak to me: through prayer and the scriptures, through the Church and the circumstances of my life, through those who love and care for me, and through my own hopes and desires.

Guide me to search openly and learn about life’s choices, so that I may respond generously to your call, and choose the vocation that will enable me to love wholeheartedly, and serve others with the special gifts you have given me.

God, Today I thank you for your love and for all your gift of life holds for me.

Amen

God bless,Paula ClarkAPRIM (Assistant Principal in Religious Identity and Mission)

SaPSaSa BaSketBallOn Thursday 4th August St Joseph’s entered 3 teams in SAPSASA Basketball held at Balaklava.

The Yr 5/6 boys met some strong competition and played 3 competition games.

The Yr 6/7 boys won two of their matches and lost two.

The Yr 6/7 girls team made it through to a close semi final against Burra but lost in a nail-biting finish on the siren.

Assertiveness involves the use of a firm voice and strong body language, including body positioning and eye contact. Assertiveness indicates control and implies an expectation of compliance. Aggression, on the other hand, shows lack of control and involves a raised voice, the use of insults and body language which can inflame a situation, inviting further aggression or provocation.

WHEN A CHILD OR YOUNG PERSON IS UNDER PROVOCATION, BEING BULLIED OR TEASED HE OR SHE SHOULD:• Make eye contact; stand in a

balanced, comfortable position about a metre from the person provoking the aggression.

• Using a firm voice, ask the other person to stop what he or she is doing. Use the person’s name if possible.

• Repeat the response if the behaviour doesn’t stop.

• If the provocation continues he or she should walk away, ignoring the aggressor or seeking an adult if they feel in danger.

WHEN A CHILD OR YOUNG PERSON NEEDS TO STAND UP FOR HIS OR HER RIGHTS, TO ASK FOR SOMETHING,

TO MAKE A STATEMENT OR BE LISTENED TO RATHER THAN IGNORED HE OR SHE SHOULD:• Attract the person’s full attention;• Be polite and use the person’s

name;• Make good eye contact and use

a strong stance; and• State the request or statement

using a firm voice;• Give the other person an

opportunity to respond if appropriate. Ask questions to clarify the other person’s position. Be polite but firm and avoid personal insults or using a whining voice.

Encourage your child to practise assertiveness in low risk situations – in front of the family or even in front of a mirror.

PEDAL PRIXOn 31st July the Year 7 students from St Joseph’s School went to the Adelaide Clipsal 500 track at Victoria Park to compete in a human powered car race called Pedal Prix. We used our PE lessons in Term 2 and Sunday morning rides to develop our riding skills to compete in this event.

Our school entered 4 bikes; 3 girl bikes and 1 boy bike. The bikes were split into tall girls, medium girls, small girls and boys. There were a few mishaps with a couple of rolled bikes (both girls and boys), a couple of loose chains and a loose back tyre which meant a spin out on the grass. Overall, the day was a huge success and ran reasonably smoothly.

Primary Schools - Category 1 - 68 competitors

St Joseph’s Tall girls placed 16th, Girls only 2nd/10 Completed 113 laps with their best speed of 33.74 km/h.

St Joseph’s Boys placed 18th, Boys only 18th/58 Completed 112 laps with their best speed of 32.96 km/h.

St Joseph’s Medium girl’s placed 23rd, Girls only 4th/10Completed 111 laps with their best speed of 29.19 km/h

.

St Joseph’s Small girl’s placed 56th, Girls only 10th/10Completed 87 laps with their best speed of 24.94 km/h

There were some tense moments between the tall girls and the boys in the final stages. With a very close finish, the tall girls finished in front of the boys, winning by 1 lap. It has been 10 years since a girl team has beaten the boys, well done Tall girls!

Despite being nervous and eager to compete, as we hadn’t competed against other schools before, we got in, took turns and pedalled for 6 hours nonstop. Some bikes travelled at high speeds with the winning team best speed of 56km/hr and some at slower speeds, on a crowded Clipsal track, with lots of noise. We all achieved excellent results and we all enjoyed the day immensely.

We are very thankful for the generous support of our Parents, Teachers, Family and Staff who helped us make the day run smoothly. We all hope that the parents enjoyed the day as much as we did and that the ‘Pit Crew’ can still move this week.
