A Message from Father Jim . . . As the year 2015 comes to a close we give thanks to God for the many blessings
and graces we have received throughout the course of this grace-filled year. Let
us thank God for the good times that have refreshed and nourished us and also
for the challenging, hard times that have helped us grow and become stronger
people of faith. As we look toward 2016, let us ask our loving Lord for the same
help and protection throughout this New Year.
All three of our churches look beautiful this Christmas! I want to express a word
of gratitude to all those who helped decorate St. Joseph’s, St. Charles and St.
Mary churches for the season. I sincerely appreciate the time that was given to
help create such beautiful worship spaces. I would also like to recognize all
those who worked so hard to make our Christmas liturgies so beautiful. To all of
the liturgical ministers, to our choirs and musicians and to all who lent a hand in
any way to make our celebrations of Christmas so beautiful, I offer a sincere
word of gratitude.
Finally, on behalf of Fr. Yamid and Fr. Gene, I want to offer a sincere word of
thanks for the many cards, Christmas treats and gifts that you shared with us this
Christmas holiday. We sincerely appreciate your generosity and your kindness!
A healthy and happy New Year to all of you!
Father Jim Volkert

"He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them." We
might be tempted to think that Jesus more or less raised himself. As the Son of
God, it might appear on first glance that earthly parents would be a mere
formality for this particular child. But it wasn't so. Mary and Joseph had real
influence, and real authority, over their son.
Although Jesus apparently understood from a tender age how he related to God
("Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"), he also knew that he
owed appropriate respect to his parents. This is why he stayed in their home in
Nazareth and was obedient to them. And because of this obedience, clearly Mary
and Joseph must have been deeply influential in his life. Their direction, their
teachings, their example, and their rules would all have shaped Jesus in his
humanity. It was thanks in no small part to the matriarch and patriarch of the
Holy Family that Jesus "advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and
man."
We should be advancing in these ways too! And those of us who are parents are
likewise called to direct and guide our children to develop as Jesus did, not only
forming our sons and daughters to succeed in the eyes of men, but also leading
them on the path of "favor before God." The Holy Family serves as a beautiful
model for us in this regard. They help us learn how to submit our lives to the
loving leadership of our heavenly Father. But more than this, Mary and Joseph
also serve as intercessors who, like any faithful family member or friend, want to
pray with us and for us. Let us turn, then, to the intercession of the Holy Family
asking that our families may be holy too.
PRACTICING MERCY: DECEMBER 2015
Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year of Mercy to begin on December 8, 2015 and continue through November 20, 2016. Catholics throughout the archdiocese are invited to practice the Works of Mercy throughout the jubilee year. For December, we focus on two Works of Mercy: “Instruct the Ignorant” and “Admonish the Sinner.”
Take these two Mercy Actions: 1.) Reflect on who around you is misinformed or confused about the faith and lovingly share with them your zeal for Jesus and his Church, and 2.) Pray outside an abortion clinic.
To explore all of the Year of Mercy resources in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, please visit www.archmil.org/yearofmercy.
Everyday Stewardship
Pope Francis said in an address from 2013, "Mary, whose 'yes' opened the door for God to undo the knot of the ancient disobedience, is the Mother who patiently and lovingly brings us to God, so that he can untangle the knots of our soul by his fatherly mercy." What would this Jubilee Year of Mercy look like without Mary saying yes to God's plan for her? Would we even have such a year?
Mary is the Mother who lovingly brings us to God, the one who turns human yesses into miracles. Mary not only gave birth to the Son of God, she gave birth to our hope that by our own affirmative reply to God's calling in our life, that God will comfort and care for us as his own. Our Lady is then not only the Mother of God, but the Mother of Mercy, for without her, the path-way of mercy and grace does not break into our world.
We then must demonstrate our gratefulness for her answer to God by be-coming vessels of God's mercy for others. Just as he turned her yes into the Incarnation, God can turn our yes into a way for others to encounter Jesus Christ. God can untangle knots in others through our generosity and compas-sion. He can shower mercy upon a world in such desperate need of it through our actions and gestures of love. This is what it means to be a ma-ture disciple and to live a stewardship way of life. Mary is the Mother of God, but she is our Mother as well. What better way to give thanks to the woman who made this possible with her gesture of love than by offering that same love to the world?

Parenting Pointer We’ve just experienced Christmas.
Relish the glee of giving and
receiving a gift. As the hubbub dies
down, pause as a family not only to
thank each other, but to be thankful
that you have the resources to give
gifts and that you have a family to
share this time with. Don’t let the day
slip away without this pause.
Marriage Moment The feast is over, but the visiting and
company may continue for a time.
Although generally a happy time of
family togetherness, Christmas can
also be a time when stress causes
short tempers. Be mindful and
merciful with your beloved these
days when you might be together in
extremely close quarters.
A PILGRIMAGE OF MERCY FOR
