MISSION STATEMENT
St. Joseph's is a Catholic Parish rooted in rural Lyons, Wisconsin. Our members seek Christ’s peace by following His teachings and by sharing
together in a lifelong journey of spiritual growth. In response to the gospel’s call for justice and compassion, we reach out and share our resources
with all those in need. We believe that each person is blessed and gifted by the Holy Spirit. We encourage everyone to respond to their baptismal call by
sharing their time, talents and treasures.

A Message from Fr. Jim 1. At a June meeting of the Pastoral Councils of each parish the discernment
process for selecting officers for the newly formed Tri-Pastoral Council took
place. I am pleased to report the leadership discerned: Mary Ann Johnson -
Chairperson, Jim Sember - Vice-Chairperson, and Marilyn Putz - Secretary.
I would like to offer a word of appreciation to these folks and to all who will
serve on Tri-Parish Pastoral Council. We are fortunate to have such a good
group of people offering their time and talent to our parishes. I also would
like to thank those who are going off their respective Pastoral Councils for
their past service.
2. As we prepare to celebrate our country’s Independence we should all pause
for a moment and thank God for the gifts and freedoms we treasure.
A Prayer for Independence Day
Father of all nations and ages, we recall the day when our country
claimed its place among the family of nations. For what has been achieved we give thanks;
for the work that still remains we ask your help. Grant that under your providence our country may share
your blessings with all the peoples of the earth. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
There will be a Mass on Monday, July 4th at 8:30 AM at St. Charles church to
celebrate this holiday. As Americans we give thanks to God for our country and
ask for His continued blessing for our peace and security.
Have a good holiday!
Father Jim Volkert

MINISTRY SCHEDULE
CCCYCLESYCLESYCLES OFOFOF FFFAITHAITHAITH: 14: 14: 14THTHTH SSSUNDAYUNDAYUNDAY INININ OOORDINARYRDINARYRDINARY TTTIMEIMEIME
"The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest." Can we be counted among the laborers? Are
we ready and willing to work for the sake of our faith, or are we looking for the
easy way out?
Our faith is more than a personal experience. It's more than a routine that fits into
our weekly schedule. Our faith is meant to be shared with others, even when that
requires a bit of work on our part. In today's Gospel, Jesus calls his followers to
"Go on your way," to prepare people for the Lord. And we are called to do the
same. We are meant to go on our way-out of our homes, and even out of our
churches-to share the good news of the Gospel and to serve those in need.
It can be tempting to think, "I believe, I go to church, isn't that enough?" But
Jesus tells us that there is an abundant harvest out there - countless people who
may just need to know that Jesus loves them or that someone is willing to help. If
we don't step up to the task then those people will miss out on that word of
encouragement, that personal invitation to Mass, that act of kindness that might
have made all the difference in their life. God may be calling some of us to an
even deeper commitment - to be a lay minister in a parish or to discern a religious
vocation, for example - but there is no doubt that God is calling all of us to labor
for his kingdom in some way.
This mission isn't for someone else. It's for us to carry out the work of the
disciples because we are today's disciples. When we accept this mission, we will
not only enjoy seeing the benefits that others receive, we will also rejoice with
those whose "names are written in heaven."

Practicing Mercy: July
Catholics throughout the archdiocese are invited to practice the Works of Mercy throughout the Jubilee Year of Mercy. For July we focus on the Corporal Work of Mercy: Give Drink to the Thirsty.
Take these Mercy Actions: Donate to Global Partners/Running Waters (www.globalpartnersrunningwaters.org) and the Office for World Mission La Sagrada Familia Water Filtration Project and practice water conservation at home.
La Sagrada Familia Water Filtration Project: Many communities of LaSagrada Familia (sister parish of our archdiocese) have water systems that allow water to reach their homes. However, this water is not treated to be drinkable and people often get disease through it. Drinking water is typically purchased in shops, and the cost is a burden for many families. A cheaper option is to have in-home water filtration. Our goal is to purchase 300 water filters at $38 US dollars for a combined total of $11,335. We will provide these filters at a subsidized rate of 300 pesos ($7 USD) to increase filter worth because it is not granted for free. This will allow more funds to be available to purchase extra filters. Please consider a gift of $40 to “give drink to the thirsty.” To learn more about our sister parish and to donate, visit: www.archmil.org/parishes.Sagrada-Familia.htm.
Global Partners/Running Waters: Their mission is “to build relationships that will provide financial resources to rural communities in Latin America and meet their needs for clean water, food, education, and improved health. Our goal is to build compassion and solidarity.” To donate, please visit: www.globalpartnersrunningwaters.org/get-involved.html
EEEVERYDAYVERYDAYVERYDAY SSSTEWARDSHIPTEWARDSHIPTEWARDSHIP
1731: Freedom is the power, rooted in reason and will, to act or not to act, to do
this or that, and so to perform deliberate actions on one's own responsibility. By
free will one shapes one's own life. Human freedom is a force for growth and
maturity in truth and goodness; it attains its perfection when directed toward
God, our beatitude.
1738: Freedom is exercised in relationships between human beings. Every human
person, created in the image of God, has the natural right to be recognized as a
free and responsible being. All owe to each other this duty of respect. The right
to the exercise of freedom, especially in moral and religious matters, is an
inalienable requirement of the dignity of the human person. This right must be
recognized and protected by civil authority within the limits of the common good
and public order (Catechism of the Catholic Church).
For those of us who are Americans, we must never take for granted the freedom
we enjoy to worship and to believe as we desire. God has given each human
being the free will to shape one's life. There are many places in the world that
seek to limit or destroy that free will. At times, even our own country risks
curtailing those freedoms because of political agenda or blindness to the truth.
Good stewardship demands we not only give thanks for that freedom, but we use
it to grow in faith and maturity. How can we not fully live out our faith in
freedom when there are others in this world that have no way of expressing their
beliefs? Once we grow in our faith and become mature disciples, we need to
recognize the need to fight for all of our human brothers and sisters that they may
enjoy the same freedom that we do. We must not count the cost in this struggle,
for the cost involved with doing nothing may be even greater.

SWING FOR YOUR SEMINARIANS!
You are invited to support the formation of future priests by attending the Saint
Francis de Sales Seminary’s Pallium Scholarship Benefit on Monday, July 25 at
Tripoli Country Club. Golf away the afternoon at beautiful Tripoli or join
seminary supporters later for the cocktail reception and dinner.
Given the $50,000 annual cost to form just one priest, answering the call to
priesthood can be financially challenging. Your support of the Pallium
Scholarship benefit will ensure that nothing stands in the way of a faith-filled
man who has been called to the priesthood. For more details or to register online,
go to www.sfs.edu/golf or call 414-747-6463.
