In anticipation of our National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 5, you’re
invited to St. Charles’ Prayer Gardens on Sunday, May 1. The Prayer
Gardens are located behind the church office, 440 Kendall Street. Enter
the Gardens from the parking lot off Kendall Street. It’s clearly marked.
Pope Francis asks us to embrace the Corporal and Spiritual Works of
Mercy, declaring this year the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Praying for the
living and the dead is one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy.
“We live in a world of perpetual noise. Noise that is competing for our
attention, competing for the opportunity to shape our world view,
competing for the chance of distracting us from becoming who we
should be. When was the last time you escaped the noise?”- Dynamic

Step away from the noise and busyness that life often is. Spend
time in the “classroom of silence” outside in the peaceful
gardens to pray for your family, our parish community,
the United States of America, and the world.

A Message from Father Jim
The spring time of the year brings with it many celebrations which center around
a number of sacraments, namely the Sacrament of First Holy Communion, the
Sacrament of Confirmation, and the Sacrament of Holy Orders.
The children from our three parishes will receive our Lord in Holy Communion
for the first time the weekend of April 23/24 at St. Charles and on Sunday, May
1st at St. Joseph and St. Mary. What a wonderful day for them! For those of us
who had this wonderful day some years ago, perhaps we could offer a prayer of
thanksgiving for the gift of the Eucharist that we may sometimes take for
granted.
Although the young people of our parishes already received the Sacrament of
Confirmation on Thursday, March 10th, many other parishes are still celebrating
this sacrament at this time. Our young people prepare diligently for this big step
in their faith lives. For those of us who have already received the gift of the Holy
Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation, perhaps we could offer a prayer
thanking God for the gift of His Spirit, and ask Him to help us use it to make our
families, society and Church better places.
This year the Archdiocese of Milwaukee can give thanks for the gift of three new
priests!
Rev. Patrick Behling, Rev. Andrew Linn and Rev. Michael Wolfe will be
ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, May 21st at the Cathedral of St. John the
Evangelist. With the shortage of priests as severe as it is, we can all offer a
prayer of thanks for these three men who are accepting the responsibility of
priestly ministry. Please continue to pray for more vocations to the priesthood
and for those who are preparing for ordination.
Congratulations to all of these people and their families on these momentous
occasions. May the Lord bless them and continue to watch over them as they
grow in the faith of the Church!
God bless you always.
Father Jim Volkert
Please keep in your prayers: Jackson Behling,
Sarah Henningfield, Jesse Lancaster and Maryn Nichols who
will receive their First Communion on Sunday, May 1st.

EEEVERYDAYVERYDAYVERYDAY SSSTEWARDSHIPTEWARDSHIPTEWARDSHIP
I met Brother Mickey McGrath, OSFS, when I was in college. He was my art
history teacher. He was pretty young then, so he was also strangely enough in my
circle of friends. It was great having him as a teacher, even if I wasn't the best art
history student. However, what I did learn from him was less about history and
more about the power of creativity. He doesn't teach in a college setting
anymore, but he does paint and draw much like we eat and drink; that is,
constantly. He leads retreats dealing with aspects of art and creativity and is a
speaker in heavy demand. But what strikes me the most about his life now is
where he lives: Camden, New Jersey.
He lives in an area known for crime and poverty, in the most violent city in New
Jersey. He creates beauty each day in an area where many find only ugliness. In
the midst of tragedy and hate, he gives a witness of beauty and love.
It is easy to bring more beauty into that which is already beautiful. It is the using
of God's gifts and the decision to co-create with God in the face of the distortion
and perversion of life that is more difficult. It is allowing God to use you to make
things new.
What gifts have been given to you so that God can work through you to make all
things new? Have you only used those gifts in a manner that was easy and cost
very little of you? How wonderful is it that God should choose you to give such
gifts! Don't just show your gifts to those who already love you, but show them to
those who need to see them the most. Through you and your gifts, those in need
will see that indeed, God's dwelling is with the human race.

CCCYCLESYCLESYCLES OFOFOF FFFAITHAITHAITH: 5: 5: 5THTHTH SSSUNDAYUNDAYUNDAY OFOFOF EEEASTERASTERASTER
"This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one
another." When people watch us, do they know that we are the disciples of Jesus?
As Christians, we are called to do more than love the Lord. We are called to be
his witnesses in the world by loving others as well. In today's Gospel reading, he
gave us a new commandment, "As I have loved you, so you also should love one
another." Anyone, everyone, should be able to look at us and see this love in
action. If we are not witnesses to this love, then we are falling short of our
mission.
So, how did Jesus love us? Selflessly. His love was never motivated by personal
gain. On the contrary, he often suffered for us, and not just on the cross. He faced
rejection and animosity for loving those who were considered "unlovable" in his
culture. He lived a life of poverty and simplicity, never focused on amassing
things for himself, but always willing to give of himself. This is the love we are
called to imitate.
The task can feel daunting. We are not perfect people, and being witnesses to
Christ-like love can strike us as a lofty challenge. Of course, it's easier to be
selfless and generous with people who love us in return, or with those who stir
our compassion. But to be consistent witnesses to loving one another in all
circumstances--like Jesus does for us--that takes it to another level. Thankfully,
however, Jesus doesn't expect us to do this on our own. He promises us his Spirit
to live in us and love through us. Through our baptism, we have his Spirit
dwelling in our hearts, along with the supernatural gifts of faith, hope, and love.
May we make these gifts flourish.
PRACTICING MERCY: APRIL
Catholics throughout the archdiocese are invited to practice the Works of Mercy throughout the Jubilee Year of Mercy.
For April, we focus on this Work of Mercy: “Comfort the Afflicted.” Take this Mercy Action: Reflect on who is suffering around you and take specific action to bring them comfort.
