Spiritual Notes:The feast of the Epiphany has a different emphasis in the church of the East than it does in the West. In the East it commemorates the Lord’s baptism while in the West it commemorates the revelation of Christ to the gentiles, represented by the magi. In the West it became a feast on January 6 in the late fourth century. The text from Isaiah calls the people of Israel to recognize God’s presence in their midst, “Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come.” Though “darkness covers the earth” the prophet goes on to say, “upon you the Lord shines ….Nations shall walk by your light.” This text’s imagery of “caravans of camels” and “dromedaries of Midian and Ephah” connects with the story of the magi. Over the centuries we have imagined the group of mysterious visitors traveling to Bethlehem with the exotic beasts of burden. In Ephesians we hear that what was revealed to Paul “by revelation” is something new. It “was not made known to people in other generations” but only now has been revealed “by the Spirit.” The message is this: “the Gentiles are coheirs…. copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus.” Only from Matthew do we hear the story of the magi. As a story it serves to show us that Jesus’ birth has universal significance; He came to save not just His own people but all people. Later tradition ascribes names, nationalities, and numbers to the magi, but Matthew simply presents them as foreigners who can read the heavens and discover that the sky is announcing the birth of “the newborn king of the Jews.” For the ancients, the stars were indicators of divine revelation. Their response to discovering “the child with Mary his mother” was only of joy as they “offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”For reflection: Is my life’s journey one of following the star of the Christ Child, or am I following another star? Do I believe that salvation is for all or just for “God’s chosen ones?

The Jubilee Year of MercyDecember 8, 2015 – November 20, 2016

“It is a favorable time to heal wounds, a time to offer everyone the way of Forgiveness and Reconciliation.” ~ Pope Francis

The third corporal work of mercy – to clothe the naked. Jesus told us He is the truth. (Jn 14:6) This truth is revealed in the Old Testament in support of the New Testament. In Isaiah God tells us to clothe the naked when we see them

(Is 58:7). Tobit, a faithful servant of God, states, “I would give my bread to the hungry and my clothing to the naked.” Tobit instructs his son Tobiah, “Give the hungry some of your bread and to the naked some of your clothing.” (Tb 4:16). As faithful disciples of Jesus, we too are meant to carry on this work of mercy. We can do this in the following ways: donate some of our clothing to organizations that distribute clothing to the poor, donate to and support groups that help clothe poor and underprivileged children, help families who are economically challenged to obtain necessary clothing, give clothing to the homeless, and see that the elderly and infirmed have sufficient clothing to sustain themselves.

Please remember in your prayers, all the sick, homebound, and recovering in our parish. Also, pray for those coping with physical or mental conditions.

Dear Parishioners, Once again, I have been given the opportunity to serve the people of Ecuador this spring on a medical and catechetical mission trip. Through Missions of Peace of Franciscan University, we will be able to care for the native Ecuadorians both physically and spiritually by ministering to those who lack both proper medical treatment and consistent access to a priest and the Sacraments. I was overwhelmed with the support and generosity I received from this parish last year when I asked for your help, and I am very thankful for it! I am asking for your support once more. Without the help of people like you, this mission is not possible. I ask you to please consider donating as well as keeping us in your prayers. Thank you in advance for your support and generosity. God Bless, Ben Burnham

January 3-9:A Stranger and You Welcomed Me

In the Gospel of Matthew (25:35), Jesus tells His disciples, “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” The call to welcome the stranger plays an important role in the lives of faithful Christians and has a particularly central place for those of us who work in the migration field. Often unfamiliar with the local tongue of the new country, not to mention its customs, the migrant needs the support of local communities so that she can better adjust to her new surroundings. National Migration Week 2016 picks up on the theme of welcome and, in doing so, calls on each of us to welcome the stranger among us. To learn more please visit www.usccb.org/about/migration-and-refugee-services/national-migration-week/index.cfm.
