Spiritual Notes:Jesus’ ascension serves as a transition point in the story of the church. His return to the Father serves to mark the end of his time on earth, but it will lead to the era of the church. Meeting with the risen Christ, the disciples ask him if he is “at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel.” This shows that they still don’t understand how salvation history is to play out. Only after they receive the Spirit at Pentecost will they understand that there is much work to be done before God’s reign is fully realized. Writing to the Ephesians, Paul prays that God will bless them with a Spirit of wisdom leading to a deeper knowledge of Christ Jesus. In raising Christ from the dead, God gave him a place over all things to the church, which is his body. As the body of Christ, we are united with him and share in his life. This image is also found in Colossians. Luke’s Gospel ended where Acts begins: at the ascension. Before Jesus departs, he instructs the disciples that his suffering, death, and resurrection were predicted in the Scriptures of Israel. Thus it is written, he tells them. Their task as witnesses of these things is not to view them passively. The word witness in Greek is the root of our word martyr. Our witness is made evident in the lives that we lead. Luke knows that many of the apostles witnessed to Jesus not only in word and deed but also by shedding their blood.

For reflection: Having received the Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation, do I strive for a deeper knowledge of Christ? What impact does my witness to Christ have on the world?

The Jubilee Year of MercyDecember 8, 2015-November 20, 2016

“It is a favorable time to heal wounds, a time to offer everyone the way of Forgiveness and Reconciliation.”

– Pope Francis

Holy Year of Mercy: Third Beatitude – “Blessed are they who mourn, they shall be comforted.” (Mt. 5:5) To mourn is to express or feel grief or sorrow. Jesus mourned for Jerusalem (Lk. 13:34-35 and Mt. 23:37-39). He lamented, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you slay the prophets and stone those who are sent to you. How often have I wanted to

gather your children together as a mother bird collects her young under her wings, and you refused me!” (Lk. 13:34) There are a number of reasons why we Catholics should mourn with the “Man of Sorrows.” First, we should mourn because of the sorrow we caused Jesus by our sins. In Gethsemane, Jesus lamented, “My heart is nearly broken with sorrow.” (Mt. 26:38) The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Woman of Sorrows, is also grieved by the sinful lives we lead. We should mourn for the sorrow we cause her. Jesus reminded us that we would be persecuted for following him. We should grieve for our persecutors’ blindness to their salvation. Another reason we should mourn is the rampant injustice that infects our world – people’s inhumanity and indifference to those created in the image and likeness of God. Such injustice is contrary to God’s will. We should not become too complacent in our life that we forget to mourn as Jesus did; otherwise, Jesus will not be able to comfort us. Willingly bearing sorrow and offering it up to God in this life leads to joy in eternity.

Please remember in your prayers, all the sick, homebound, and recovering in our parish. Also, pray for those coping with physical or mental conditions.

“Be His Hope to Others”Our Church, in this Year of Mercy, reminds us to renew our commitment to care for others. The life of Jesus exemplifies a great empathy and love for all of God’s children. Through our prayers and contributions, we too can show our care and love of our brothers and sisters by supporting the vital ministries and programs, made possible by the Appeal. Our parish benefits from many of these programs. For instance, the education of our youth through the support of Catholic Schools and our Parish School of Religion, marriage preparation, and the education of priests and deacons, just to name a few. This year our parish goal is $70,436.20. Any amount raised over this goal will be returned to our parish to be used for our needs. No gift is too small. Please pray for the success of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.
