I share with you this reflection: Is someone in your house going back to school? If so there are books and supplies to buy, schedules to plan, transportation to be arranged. There is the worry over new teachers and whether everything that was learned last year has been forgotten. But no matter. Most of the time the school year begins with a review. That’s good because sometimes we understand things better the second or third time we learn them.

With the scriptures this Sunday all of us are going back to school. The series of selections from the Gospel of Mark and the letter of James that we begin this week will teach us one more time what it means to be a disciple. Lucky for us, since most of us can only learn this lesson if we hear and apply it on a daily basis. Today’s first reading also instructs us to “hear” and “observe” “the commandments of the Lord . . . that [we] may live” (Deuteronomy 4:1, 2). And the psalm re-views the basics: “The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord” (15:1a). —Virginia Stillwell

Comparto con ustedes esta reflexión, ¿Hay alguien en tu familia que regresa a la escuela? Si es así, habrá libros y otros materiales que comprar, horarios que planificar y arreglos que hacer para el transporte. Están también las preocupaciones sobre los nuevos maestros y si todo lo que se aprendió el año anterior ha sido olvidado. Pero no hay por qué preocuparse. La mayoría de las veces el nuevo año escolar comienza con un repaso. Eso es bueno, ya que algunas veces entendemos mejor las cosas cuando las escuchamos por segunda o tercera vez.

Con las Escrituras de este domingo todos volvemos de nuevo a la escuela. La serie de pasajes seleccionados del Evangelio de Marcos y la carta de Santiago que comenzamos esta semana nos enseñarán una vez más lo que significa ser discípulo. Esto es afortunado para la mayoría de nosotros, que sólo nos es posible aprender esta lección si la escuchamos y la pone-mos en práctica diariamente. La primera lectura de hoy también nos instruye para “escuchar” y “practicar” “las leyes . . . y los preceptos que [nos] da el Señor. . . para que [vivamos]” (Deuteronomio 4:1, 2). Y el salmo repasa lo básico: “El que procede con rectitud, se comporta honradamente” (15:2a). —Virginia Stillwell

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION K -8TH GRADE (CCD)

Registrations for the new Religious Education course has begun. If you would like to enroll your child, please prepare the following doc-uments: Birth Certificate, Baptismal Certificate and $100 contribution for 1 child, $120 for 2 children, $140 for 3 children and $160 for 4 children.

This year the classes will be on Wednesday, 6:30 – 7:45 pm, or Friday 6:30 – 7:45 pm in Spanish and Sunday, 12:30-1:30 pm, in Eng-lish. We will be registering from Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm.

Classes begin: Wednesday - September 12th, Friday - September 14th and Sunday - September 16th.

Las inscripciones para el nuevo curso escolar de Educación Religiosa ya comenzó. The first week of school was one of our best here at St. John. We want to thank the parish community for your support and prayers. Our new and returning students were full of excitement and laughter as they caught up with staff and friends and began their studies. Our 5th - 8th grade students received their Chromebooks and our little ones have been hard at work learning class routines and getting back into the swing of things. Please continue to keep our school community in your prayers. La primera semana de clases fue una de las mejores aquí en San Juan. Queremos agradecer a la comunidad parroquial por su apoyo y oraciones. Nuestros estudiantes estaban llenos de emoción y risas mientras hablaban con amigos y comenzaban a estudiar.
