Mr. Karkhanis interacting with the students

But, just because you are different from others doesn’t mean you cannot succeed. You might even surpass those people with natural talent (referring to jokers in the cards). That is why the students holding the ‘joker’ cards got the power to choose who goes in which team!

After the groups had settled down, each group had to appoint a group leader and decide their group’s name. The group names (leader) were ‘Pirates’ (Ms. Sonali Sharma), ‘Majestic Diamonds’ (Ms. Swapnali Tuscano), ‘The Thalivas’ (Ms. Rhea Alexander) and ‘Hades’(Mr. Reevon Rodrigues). ‘Majestic Diamonds’ was chosen as the best name amongst all other groups.

The first task for each group: appoint any one student from their group as their ‘super-hero’. Super-hero has to find problems which exist within the college and provide solutions for the same. Each group came up with various problems likes Photocopy issue, elevator problems, canteen issues, etc. and solutions for the same. After the super-heroes had done presenting their problems and solutions, Mr. Karkhanis asked them to come in front of all the groups and shout out their respective group name. The one that gets most applause would be the winner.

Think Out Loud A Workshop Conducted by Mr. Gaurav

Karkhanis

Dr. Vikram Shete, faculty from the computerengineering department , invited Mr. GauravKarkhanis, an employee of Cognizant TechnologySolutions, to conduct a workshop titled “Think OutLoud” at St. Francis Institute of Technology(SFIT)on Wednesday, 21/08/2013. The workshop wasconducted in the Assembly Hall of SFIT from10.15 a.m. to 12.15a.m. Mr. Karkhanis is a batchmate of Dr. V. Shete in graduation, 2003

A team discussing the first task

The workshop started with Mr. Karkhanis introducing himself. Then he asked two-three

students as volunteers to distribute playing cards among other students. Once all the cards were distributed, Mr. Karkhanis gave small prizes to special card holders like those who had aces or jokers. Then all the students were divided into groups according to the suits they had on their

cards (Spade, Heart, Clover and Diamond). The students who did not receive any cards were

made to stand aside. Then Mr. Karkhanis asked the students who had the Joker cards to decide which student from the ‘card-less group’ goes

where. The takeaway here was that, some people achieve success due to their default talent

(referring to aces in the cards).

These workshops were a part of E-Cell, IIT Bombay’s flagship annual event, “Eureka!”– the annual B-Plan competition to encourage youth towards entrepreneurship. The Speaker for the event was Mr. Ajeet Khurana,  member of the Board of Directors of Carve Niche Technologies, a technology enabled K-10 content provider. He is also spear heading in e-commerce education on About.com; part of The New York Times Company and an active member of Mumbai Angels.

The attendees included students from our own college and from other management colleges, alumni, working professionals such as Business Development Manager of Tuftile Polymers Ltd., System Analyst of CMC Ltd. and Account Manager of Dosch Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd.

The workshop was conducted in view to inspire and train young minds on the different aspects of entrepreneurship. The event was an interactive session with activities involving discussion of a business plan, games and exercises for attendees to generate ideas, make business plans, learn about investments and identify their strengths in area of entrepreneurship.

Finally, Mr. Karkhanis declared ‘The Thalivas’ tobe the winner. This was not because they hadreceived the maximum applause, but because theyhad appreciated the other teams who had performedwell (instead of just applauding their own team). The take away here is that, winning is not alwaysimportant! We should learn to appreciate the thingsthat we believe in even though it might not give usvictory. There were many such activities in theworkshop and every activity had a takeawaymessage associated with it.

All the students were happy and these methods oflearning are really useful as they not only removethe ‘boredom’ out of the topic but, they alsoinculcate a feeling of satisfaction amongst thestudents. Students will always look forward to suchactivities.

In his explanation, he gave examples of many mobile devices such as Nokia, Samsung, Blackberry etc alongwith the pros and cons of different platforms. While explaining the cons he explained that it is very hectic to work on such different platforms. Then to avoid that he introduced a new software named as WorkLight Studio developed by IBM. This software has various functionalities by which a developer can simultaneously work on various technologies and integration is very easy. This software platform is used in many renowned software companies worldwide. Then he told that he owns an educational institute called as Syum Technologies in which he provides training to students and also provide certification for such training. The best part was that he told that the certificates will be issued directly by IBM. Then the seminar came to an end after he thanked each and everyone present over there for attending his seminar.
