Catechism of the Catholic Church

552. How can adoration be defined? Adoration is the humble acknowledgement by human beings that they are creatures of the thrice-holy Creator. Further reading: CCC 2628 553. What are the different forms of the prayer of peti-tion? It can be a petition for pardon or also a humble and trust-ing petition for all our needs either spiritual or material. The first thing to ask for, however, is the coming of the Kingdom. Further reading: CCC 2629-2633, 2646 554. In what does the prayer of intercession consist? Intercession consists in asking on behalf of another. It conforms us and unites us to the prayer of Jesus who in-tercedes with the Father for all, especially sinners. Inter-cession must extend even to one's enemies. Further reading: CCC 2634-2636, 2647

549. How does the Holy Spirit intervene in the Church's prayer? The Holy Spirit, the interior Master of Christian prayer, forms the Church in the life of prayer and allows her to enter ever more deeply into contemplation of and union with the unfathomable mystery of Christ. The forms of prayer expressed in the apostolic and canonical writings remain normative for Christian prayer. Further reading: CCC 2623, 2625 550. What are the essential forms of Christian prayer? They are blessing and adoration, the prayer of petition and intercession, thanksgiving and praise. The Eucharist contains and expresses all the forms of prayer. Further reading: CCC 2643-2644 551. What is "blessing"? The prayer of blessing is man's response to God's gifts: we bless the Almighty who first blesses us and fills us with his gifts. Further reading: CCC 2626-2627, 2645

Preparing Teens for Advent by Jonathan Blevins I have to ask myself, how can I prayerfully anticipate Christ’s second com-ing and celebrate the anniversary of my Savior’s birth all the while making sure that everyone in my life gets a present that shows them how much they mean to me? Here are four ways that we as youth ministers can pre-pare our hearts and the hearts of our teens for the Advent season. Reconciliation I’ve always thought that Advent was only about prepar-ing our hearts for Christmas. While that is a major part of it, Advent is also a time to prepare our hearts for the second coming of Christ. As Catholics, we believe that Jesus Christ will come again, and we are called to be watchful and ready for when that happens. Going to con-fession and offering an opportunity for your teens to go as well will certainly help them prepare for the day when they shall see God in all His glory. Ask Questions Every once in a while I find myself in a spiritual rut. I go through the motions in my life and my ministry. When that begins to happen, I ask myself why I am doing what I am doing. Why am I in ministry? Why do I go to Mass? The answer, I realize, is simple: following Christ is the only thing that matters. He is my rock. So how do we get teens to come to that conclusion? Prompt them by asking important questions. Why are you here? Why did God create you? What is the point of life? It’s a great way to reset our way of thinking to focus on what truly matters.

Serve Others Christmas in our society has turned into such a selfish holiday. From a very young age, I remember asking my parents every single day for a different Christmas present. Rather than doing what I did, use Advent as a time to ask what your community needs and gather teens together to make an impact on that need. Serving others helps turn our selfish hearts into selfless ones, and it can transform the way that our teens pray throughout the Advent season. When we break down our pride, it is immensely easier to see how much we need God and His un-failing love.

Have a Life Night on Advent Many teens simply do not know what Advent is or why it is important. Taking an entire Life Night to break open the theme of wait-ing for Christ will help prepare their hearts for this miracle. It will also provide teens a chance to ask any questions they might have about Advent, hopefully making the season more personal and understandable for them.

We as youth ministers have a unique oppor-tunity to help our teenagers show the world what Christmas is all about by preparing them during Advent. In the world we live, to be Catholic is to be countercultural. There is no better way to be countercultural than to focus on Christ and serve oth-ers, particularly at a time when selfishness is at its peak. I pray that you and your teens have a prayerful Advent filled with hopeful anticipation…and maybe even some leftover candy corn. I know a guy.

Youth Humor of the Week

After the 1st grade PREP class sang some carols, little Betsy commented, “Wasn’t it good of the shepherds to put on clean clothes when they went to see baby Jesus? The Catechist inquired, “What do you mean...why would you say that?” Betsy explained, “Well, we just sang, “While the Shepherds Washed their Socks by Night,” didn’t we?”

And the Baby Jesus was smiling!

Father Marty’s Corner

The Old Testament reading from Isaiah on this Second Sunday of Advent reminds me of four songs. This fact provides an acute awareness of all that Isaiah has to say and its relevance to us until this day. The prophet Isaiah is certainly encouraging us to hope in all that has been promised. He talks of comfort. He focuses on a voice crying out. He invites us to go up the mountain to proclaim the good news. He also calls us to see Him as a shepherd. All of these images bring us consolation. It is our response in faith to all the good that has been shown to us throughout the history of our salvation. The beginning of the gospel of Mark is a clear affirmation of what we have heard from the prophet Isaiah as well as the entrance of Saint John the Baptist, who is a central figure in the Advent adventure. The Baptist, John calls all of us to repentance and the urgency of following the message of Jesus. May we sense the urgency and follow faithfully!

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to himand were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.John was clothed in camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on lo-custs and wild honey. And this is what he proclaimed: "One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

Prime Rib & Crab Cake Dinner to be held on Saturday April 21 after the 5:00 Mass

Did you know? That the 3rd Sunday of Advent is known as Gaudete Sunday. The term Gaudete refers to the first word of the Entrance Antiphon, "Rejoice". Rose vestments are worn to emphasize our joy that Christmas is near, and we also light the rose candle on our Advent wreath. Question: Who was the first martyr in the New Testament? When is his or her Feast Day? Who stood by and watched this innocent person get stoned to death? Note the Bible passage if you can. Last Week’s Answer: At the time of the census when Christ was born, why did Mary and Joseph not stay in Nazareth? What town did they go to and why? In Luke’s Gospel we hear of the census of Caesar Augustus. Each Jewish family was to go to the home of their father’s birth. Nazareth was the home of Mary, yet, Bethlehem was the home town of Joseph whose lineage was from the House of King David.

And you can look all of this up!
