The 5 Misconceptions

Misconception #1: Buying natural and toxic free deodorant is expensive.

Let’s be honest here. Some are cheap and some are expensive. When you find a truly all natural and organic deodorant with no toxins in it you’re going to pay a little more. Not a lot more, but a little more. It’s like anything, if you want to have the best quality deodorant that only uses the high quality organic ingredients you need to expect to pay a little more. Is it worth it? Ask yourself if your heath and the health of your family is worth it and you will have your answer. Check out our article on how switching to natural deodorant has actually saved us $17 a month.

Misconception #2:Natural deodorant doesn’t last and you need to buy it more frequently.

Good quality natural deodorant will last longer than traditional store bought toxic deodorant. Many people have tried cheap “natural” deodorant and noticed that it

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 6: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

doesn’t last and you need to apply more frequently and buy more often. Make sure to choose your natural deodorant wisely. Check out our article on choosing the best deodorant by clicking here.

Misconception #3:I am pretty sure that most everyone who uses natural deodorant is a hippy.

Not to worry, I use to think the exact same thing. Then i realized many of the most successful people in the world have been making the switch to all natural deodorant. Why the switch? Biggest reason is for their health. No ones wants to by applying toxic sludge to their arm pits on a daily basis.

Misconception #4:I have heard that natural deodorant Clumps in your armpit and Stains your clothes.

You will find that cheap immitations may clump. However with high quality natural deodorant you will never run into this problem. Most high quality natural deodorants use coconut oil and shea butter as a base so they go on smooth and absorb right away. As for the staining... you

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 7: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

will want to make sure you are avoiding “aluminum” as an ingredient in your deodorant. I’ve never heard of an all natural deodorant staining your clothes.

Misconception #5:The company that sells their deodorant for the most obviously has the best deodorant.

Wrong. Some companies just simply use fancy marketing and sex to sell their deodorant form more money. You will also notice products in the network marketing industry sell for much more because they have so many people to pay. If you can find an all natural, organic and toxic free deodorant for between $13-$15 a month, you are doing great! Remember, it should be Natural, Organic and Toxic Free though.

Avoiding 6 Natural Deodorant Rip-Offs

Rip-Off #1:When a company uses the word “Organic” as part of their product name and the product is not organic. To make things worse, typically these companies are just NOT organic, but 9 times out of 10 they have many harmful and

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 8: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

toxic ingredients in their products. It is very important to read labels and understand what is really in the product. Good rule of thumb: If you can’t pronounce it, don’t use it.

Rip-Off #2: Calling it natural or organic when it is not. Many brands out there use these terms freely when they are talking about their products even though there is nothing ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ about them. ALWAYS read the ingredients to know what you are really getting.

Rip-Off #3: Claiming “aluminum free” This a big thing right now for many deodorant companies. However, we need to realize that they are getting slick and even disguising it in some “healthy/natural” ones. Aluminum is linked to Alzheimer’s along with many other degenerative diseases. Make sure to say no to aluminum!

Rip-Off #4: Selling Out to big companies. This something that has just recently started to become a big trend. We now see more and more small companies being “bought-out” by big multinational corporations who then reformulate their product to included many toxic

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 9: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

substances. Always know who you are buying from. We like to give our business to family owned companies that still know and care about their customers health.

Rip-Off #5:Pulling on our heart-strings. This is also a new trend that is getting more popular by the day. We see companies partnering with large charities to increase their sales. For example “Naturally Fresh” uses the pink breast cancer ribbon to help promote the sale of their products and they have over 3 know toxins in their deodorant... one of which could potentially have 800 different toxins they don’t have to disclose. So beware that many times when a company attaches a big “charity” to their company they are trying to distract you from the quality of it.

Rip-Off #6: Cheap Plastic packaging.Selling a “all natural”, “organic” or “toxic-free” deodorant in cheap plastic packaging. What do 99% of deodorants come in? The cheapest plastic tube known to man. There are many harmful and toxic chemicals that leech out of plastic and into your deodorant. So even if you are buying

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 10: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

a safe natural deodorant and it is packaged in a plastic case, your new deodorant is becoming infected with the toxins leeching from the plastic. Then those toxins are being applied directly to one of the bodies most sensitive areas. If you are buying your deodorant in plastic make sure you look for plastic numbered with either a “2” or “4”. These are the safest to use.

The 7 Dirty Secrets

Dirty Secret #1:Greenwashing - Greenwashing is when a company or organization spends more time and money claiming to be “green” & “natural” through advertising and marketing than actually implementing business practices that minimize environmental and health impacts.

Dirty Secret #2:Sexy marketing to sell - Anytime you see “sex” being used to sell a product, you can be sure it is probably not all that good. If the product was really as good as they say it is, they wouldn’t need to use sex to sell it.

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 11: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

Dirty Secret #3:Hidden toxins - This is VERY scary and dangerous. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) does an amazing job at keeping up with the toxins that are plaguing consumers products. However, big companies have bigger budgets and stay ahead of the game. They recreate toxins and chemicals faster than we as consumers can keep up to what they really are. I am not going to get into listing the thousands of toxins that are masked in products right now, but I will leave you with this: If you can’t pronounce it or don’t know what it is, don’t buy it or put it on your body without researching it. A great resource for this is www.ewg.org

Dirty Secret #4:Using children to insinuate that the product is safe. Many companies and product brands will use images or videos of children using their product to insinuate that it is safe for them. We automatically draw a parallel in our minds that the product must be safe if a child is using it. Companies don’t lie about things... do they? This is a very dirty marketing tactic and we as educated consumers need to be aware of it. Always do your research and see what is in the product. Then look for safer alternatives.

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 12: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

Dirty Secret #5:Leveraging CharitiesWe are seeing this happen more and more now. Big companies leveraging charitable organizations to help sell more of their products. Many companies actually sell products with ingredients in them that are linked to causing the disease they are supporting. Education is our most valuable asset. There are a few charities that attract good, honest clients. One in particular is 1% For The Planet.

Dirty Secret #6:You will not sweatThis is a bad thing. Sweating is very cleansing for your body. Various cultures throughout time have embraced this. When you sweat, your body undergoes a series of processes that allow for the release of toxins and an increase in metabolism (helping you burn fat).

When you sweat, you breathe faster, your heart works more, your circulation improves and your metabolism accelerates, all in an effort to resume your normal body temperature.

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 13: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

Because your circulation is increased during sweating, many of the toxins and impurities are able to exit your body by way of your open skin pores.

When your skin pores open any dirt or impurities on the surface layers of the skin have a chance to exit. Sweating regularly will help you to achieve softer and smoother skin. Toxins, when trapped, find their way into the lymph nodes, where they concentrate and contribute to the cellular changes that may lead to cancer. On the other hand, several sites medical journals discuss the supposed link between antiperspirants and Alzheimer’s disease.

So the last thing you would want to do is block your pours.Sweating is good, smelling is bad. ;-)

Dirty Secret #7:Stick to what worksMany of us don’t change because we have been conditioned to keep using “what works” or “old faithful”. Companies spend a lot of money keeping customers using harmful toxic products by playing the “why change” card or even the “we’ve been around for 1000 years” angle.

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 14: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

Just because a company has been around a long time doesn’t mean they have a safe product.

If you’re using a regular store bought deodorant or antiperspirant you need to STOP reading right now and go throw it in the garbage. I am so serious. Do this for your health. Take your childrens deodorant and THROW them in the garbage. Then come back and finish reading.

The 4 Classic Mistakes

Classic Mistake #1:Fancy packagingDon’t be fooled by fancy packaging and shiny labels. Even if it comes in a box with a bow on it, this doesn't mean it is natural, organic and toxic free. Always look at the ingredients.

Classic Mistake #2:False claimsJust because they say it doesn’t make it true. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Do your research.

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 15: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

If a company claims their product will do something crazy, don’t buy it. If it is really that amazing, you will hear about it from multiple sources.

Classic Mistake #3:Expensive must mean it is goodSome of the most expensive ‘natural’ deodorants on the market are full of toxic chemicals, non-organic ingredients, expensive shipping and their packaging is leeching chemicals into your so-called “safe” new deodorant. Price doesn’t determine what is good and what is not.

Classic Mistake #4:“They told me it was safe and works”No matter what the employee, store owner or website says you need to know what you are looking for and what to avoid. It would be amazing if we could place our families health in the hands of others, but we just can’t. We need to do our own research and that is one of the reason I needed to put this little Consumer Awareness Guide together for you. So that you will be better armed when it comes to selecting a great natural deodorant.

9 Tips To Buying The Best Natural Deodorant

#1: Parabens - Most deodorants, even the ones marked “natural,” still contain harmful ingredients like parabens that produce cancer-causing estrogens. Buyer beware.  #2: Aluminum - Contained in most deodorants and even disguised in some “healthy/natural” ones, aluminum is linked to Alzheimer’s and many other health related issues.  #3: Fragrances - Fragrances are lab-created chemicals that are known to have negative health effects, and also trigger Asthma and allergies. One of the scariest things about fragrances is that the manufacturer doesn’t have to disclose what is in it.  #4: Skin absorbency - It was once thought that our skin was a “barrier,” but with patch technology we now know it is a channel and pathway for detoxification that allows good and bad things in and out of the body. Skin is our largest organ and we need to protect what it absorbs and allow it to release the harmful toxins that are in our body.

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 17: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

#5: Sweating is good - We love to sweat, it is natural! When you sweat, you release toxins and it is a normal cooling response the body needs. Avoid anything that “prevents” sweat or keeps you “dry”. #6: Odor - Odor is not so good, but is expected with the amount of chemicals we take in eating a Standard American Diet. You want to find a natural deodorant that lasts. My recommendation lasts many people for up to 2 days! #7: Misleading marketing - Some deodorants, even natural and organic ones like crystals and salt sprays, state that they have no aluminum chloride; but if you read the fine print they do have ‘potassium aluminum sulfate’, which is still aluminum. Make sure what you are buying has all their ingredients disclosed without any misleading terms or marketing. If they have to try and hide something then stay away.  #8: Works - More and more people say that most conventional and natural deodorants stop workingand don’t last. Many have to reapply 3 and 4 times a day and they still smell BO. You want a deodorant that works even for extreme athletes in extreme heat. Something

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 18: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

that will withstand all sports, being a parent, endurance races, mud events, hot yoga classes and even CrossFit.  #9: Staining and clumping - It is scary how most other deodorants leave clumps of “stuff” in your pits. Or another bad sign is they won’t wash off in the shower and leave yellow staining on shirts. The yellow stain is from the aluminum. Make sure to use natural deodorant with NO aluminum. This will ensure no yellow stains or clumping on you pit!  You want it to rub on like butter.

BONUS TIP#10: Packaging - When it comes to packaging there are many options. Ideally you want to use a dark glass container. Plastics leech toxins when left in a long time. Clear glass allows UV light in and it damages the quality of your deodorant. So a dark glass jar is preferable. Second choice would be #2 or #4 plastic. If at all possible if you receive your deodorant in plastic, try to remove it and place in a glass jar... or just buy it in a glass jar.

 Deodorant Is Actually Pretty Cool

www.NaturallyDownToEarth.com Consumer Awareness Guide

Page 19: Deodorant Consumer Awareness Guide

Being heavily involved in this field for over 6 years I have one deodorant in particular that I typically recommend to anyone who asks. It is important to know that I have spent time researching over 100 natural deodorants (mind you many were not natural even though they claimed to be).

One of the big reasons for this research is because my husband developed two lumps in his upper chest. After trying countless brands, being deceived over and over and not being able to find something to last more than 5 hours I knew the adventure was on.

I want to let you in on a little secret.

I want to share with you the actual criteria I based my decision on and why this deodorant stands out from the crowd. Don’t worry I am not going to get into all the details here, I am just going to give you my bullet list of criteria that I used to make the decision on what is the safest, most natural, completely toxic free and organic deodorant our community has ever seen.

I guarantee and endorse this product. That's right. If you not happy with it, I will personally refund your money, and send you an apology letter.
