Dear Parishioners,
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or
the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.”
With this declaration Jesus begins to teach the
people in this Sunday’s Gospel. It is in this passage that we
find the famous sentence structure; “You have heard that it
was said….but I say to you.” Anytime I hear this Gospel, I
think back to when I first came to this country and began to
take English classes in high school. Every essay we had to
do had three parts: an introduction, the body, and a
conclusion. The introduction was one paragraph; the body
was three paragraphs, and the conclusion was one
paragraph. It was very difficult at first since I had to
translate everything in my head from Spanish into English
before I could put it in paper. But I had just begun to
master writing an essay when I was introduced to a research
paper. And what was a research paper? - a much, much
longer essay. I remember being extremely anxious when
the teacher said that it was a ten page minimum. But with
the grace of God I was able to manage.
This story, I think, gives some insight into what is
happening in this Sunday’s Gospel. Think of the following
statement from our Lord;
“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,
You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to
judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his
brother will be liable to judgment.”
The Old Testament prescript was similar to that
five paragraph essay. It was an important, foundational
task and its purpose was to prepare me so that I might be
able to write longer essays. Similarly, Jesus sees the Old
Testament prescripts as preparation for the true and perfect
law which He brings. His law, as we see, is much more
challenging than the first, but it is not impossible to live out
if we learn from Him and seek His help and guidance. So,
if it feels that living out our faith is more difficult now than
when we first began on this spiritual journey, then we are in
the right path.
In Christ,
Fr. Juan Jose
