Dear Parishioners,

Our weekly gathering at Sunday Mass is the

celebration of the great mystery and miracle of the

Eucharist. The liturgy of the church is enriched by the

addition of many expressions - in human terms - of the

understanding of our belief in the mystery. This is

accomplished by the use of varied colors in vestments

and decorations, in selected readings of Scripture, and in

the character and text of the music.

Today’s Scripture readings center a lot around

Christ’s teaching and example of mercy. The music and

its texts help us to think deeply about this mercy. It is

made very clear in todays opening hymn “There’s a

Wideness in God’s Mercy”.

One of the ministries that helps us in reflecting on

the various themes and seasons of the Church Year is the

ministry of music. I would like to take this opportunity to

thank all who participate in making music an important

part of our Sunday celebration.

Our parish choirs ended their season last Sunday

and will resume singing in September. I invite

parishioners to consider membership in the adult and

children’s choir when we resume rehearsals in

September. More information will follow in a September

bulletin.

Dear Parishioner,

Each of us, as a Catholic and an American, has a

responsibility to participate in the national discussion of

issues facing our nation and our world, to provide a moral

leaven for our republic, and to be “the salt of the earth”.

Whether you are a Democrat, a Republican or an

independent, you must see beyond party politics and choose

leaders according to principle and the Common Good.

Examine the wide range of issues. A consistent

ethic of life should be the moral framework of our voting

decisions; a well formed Christian conscience does not

encourage laws that contradict fundamental principles of

Faith.

The key themes a Catholic should reflect on before

voting are:

• The life and dignity of the human person

• The call to family, community and participation

• Rights and responsibilities

• Options for the Poor and vulnerable

• Dignity of work and the rights of workers

• Human Solidarity

• Caring for God’s Creation

• How our tax dollars are used

• Homeland security

• Who will name the next 2, 3, or 4 members of the

Supreme Court

One thing that all sides agree on is a desire to have

this presidential campaign over and done. It has not been

an uplifting experience for the American people. I don’t

recall another time in my life when the demands of

American pluralism and Catholic conscience were so

challenging.

Pray that, in all things, God’s will be done… that

includes this election.
