Un miembro inscrito recibe co-rrespondencia de la parroquia.

On the weekend of June 23-24, 2012, we will take up a special collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. When priests retire from pastoral responsi-bilities, they remain ordained priests, configured through the Sacrament of Holy Orders to Christ, the head of his Body, the Church. Priests are not employees; they are fathers in Christ and brothers to all.

The retired priests celebrate Mass and sacraments in hundreds of parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Their dedicated service enables many parishes to avoid reducing the number of Masses celebrated each weekend. Some retired priests are called upon to be temporary administrators of parishes. Our senior priests do this willingly as a continuation of the many years that they have faithfully served our Church. Please join me in offering our retired priests words of appreciation and gratitude for their many years of priestly ministry.

The Priests’ Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. Again this year, we have seen the cost of health care, prescription drugs, and nursing-home care increase. In addition, the priests’ pension fund remains seriously impacted by the economic downturn. This special collection will help us continue to support our retired priests. You may be aware that the December col-lection for retired men and women Religious is designated to provide only for those in Religious Orders. Archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from this collection.

I would like to personally thank all of our retired priests for their lives and their exemplary ministry. We are blessed to have more than one hundred retired priests min-istering in our parishes. May their spirit of sharing continue to enliven our Church!

I am thankful to all of you for your most gracious generosity in this collection last year. I ask you to repeat your kindness this year. Your donations, your prayers and your good wishes are a great affirmation of our retired priests. Please pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.

Junio de 2012 Queridos amigos en Cristo,

Durante el fin de semana del 23 al 24 de junio de 2012, llevaremos a cabo una colecta especial para los Sacer-dotes Retirados de la Arquidiócesis. Cuando los sacerdotes se retiran de sus responsabilidades pastorales, siguen siendo sacerdotes ordenados, configurados, a través del Sacramento de las Órdenes Sagradas, a Cristo, la cabeza de su Cuerpo, la Iglesia. Los sacerdotes no son empleados; son padres en Cristo y hermanos de todos.

Los sacerdotes retirados celebran misa y realizan los sacramentos en cientos de parroquias de toda la Arquidiócesis de Chicago. Sus dedicados servicios evitan que muchas pa-rroquias se vean en la necesidad de reducir el número de Misas celebradas cada fin de semana. Algunos sacerdotes retirados son llamados para ser administradores temporales de algunas parroquias. Nuestros sacerdotes jubilados hacen esto con la mejor de las voluntades como una continuación de los muchos años que han servido fielmente a nuestra Iglesia. Por favor, ofrezcamos juntos a nuestros retirados sacerdotes unas pala-bras de aprecio y gratitud por los muchos años de ministerio sacerdotal.

La Asociación de Retiro y Ayuda Mutua de los Sa-cerdotes (PRMAA, por sus siglas en inglés) cuida de nuestros sacerdotes retirados. Este año, hemos visto una vez más que se ha incrementado el costo de los servicios de salud, de las medicinas prescritas y de las clínicas de cuidados. Además, el fondo de pensión de los sacerdotes continúa siendo seria-mente afectado por la crisis económica. Esta colecta especial nos ayudará a continuar apoyando a nuestros sacerdotes reti-rados. Quizá ustedes sepan que la colecta de diciembre para mujeres y hombres religiosos está asignada a apoyar única-mente a los que pertenecen a las Órdenes Religiosas. Los sacerdotes arquidiocesanos no reciben ningún fondo de esta colecta.

También quiero agradecer personalmente a todos nuestros sacerdotes retirados por sus vidas y por sus ministerios ejemplares. Somos muy agraciados de tener más de cien sa-cerdotes retirados ministrando en nuestras parroquias. ¡Que el espíritu de compartir continúe animando a nuestra Iglesia!

Y a ustedes les agradezco su graciosa generosidad en la colecta del año pasado. Les pido que repitan su solidaridad este año.
