    OVERVIEW

The league-wide baseball All-Stars were selected by the L-L League’s coaches. The Player of the Year and Coaches of the Year were selected by sports writer Ed Gruver.

A season that will be remembered by many for its unseasonably cold and rainyconditions took on a golden hue in district play as Hempfield, Donegal and LancasterCounty Christian claimed championships. Lancaster County Christian then won its first

PIAA title, as Kyle Ebersole tossed a two-hitter in an 8-0 win over Eisenhower in theClass A final. Manheim Central’s Blake Reiff threw a rare no-hitter in state competition;Ephrata earned the L-L title; Lampeter-Strasburg claimed a crown in its first seasonin Section Two and Lancaster Catholic reclaimed the top spot in Section Four. Off thefield, L-S star Bear Shank showed remarkable courage in undergoing brain surgeryand Manheim Township coaching legend Bill Sassaman did not have his contractrenewed after 23 seasons and 339 victories at the Blue Streaks’ helm.

L-L LEAGUE SPRING ALL STARS: SOFTBALL4 JUNE 16, 2015 LNP | LANCASTER, PA

    OVERVIEW

As 24 Lancaster-Lebanon League softball teams struggled tofind themselves in March, as well as find an outdoors place

to practice, it was a safe bet that defending league championLampeter-Strasburg would wear the favorite’s bull’s-eye.

And that L-L Section Three stablemate Donegal would bethe odds-on favorite to join the Pioneers in a rematch of the2014 title game. All of which did come to pass, but the road tothere was never cut-and-dry.

The Pioneers and Indians went down to the wire, and beyond,in Section Three, needing a one-game playoff to decide thechampion. Accomplishing the task of beating a team twice inthree days, L-S prevailed to defend its section crown.

With only two returning starters, Warwick reloaded and wrested

the Section One title from Manheim Township, batting back adetermined push from Hempfield and upstart Penn Manor.

Solanco shook off a nightmare performance in the crossoverportion of its schedule to win Section Two. In its first yearback in the section after realignment, Garden Spot closed fast, securing a first-ever league playoff berth.

Annville-Cleona and Pequea Valley staged their annual battleroyale in Section Four. For the third time in seven years aplayoff, won by A-C, was needed to decide the title.

After falling to L-S in the one-game playoff for the sectiontitle, Donegal topped L-S to win the league title and went onto win the District Three Class AAA championship.

Scoring its first post-season wins since 1999, Penn Manoradvanced to the semifinals of the District AAAA tournament, qualifying for its first-ever PIAA Tournament.

The Comets and Indians both posted initial victories in the statetourney before being eliminated in the quarterfinal round.

    Softball

    SOFTBALL COACH OF THE YEAR

    Mark HoughWarwick

After winning eight SectionOne titles in a row beginningin 2005, as well as nineseasons out of 10 from2003-12, Warwick watchedHempfield and ManheimTownship claim the sectiontitle the last two seasons.

With just two senior startersreturning, along with foursophomores with gameexperience, the chances of

the Warriors returning to thetop spot seemed slight.

In his second season asWarwick’s head coach,Mark Hough melded thislimited seasoning with four

    newcomers,the resultingamalgam

    reclaimingthe sectioncrown forthe Warriors,their 12thoverall.

The Warriorsposted a 15-1 league recordwith a one-run, extra-inningloss to Hempfield the onlyblemish. They topped L-Lfinalists Donegal and L-Sin nonleague games butL-S turned the tables in theleague semifinals, winning 2-1.The Warriors bowed out ofthe District Three Class AAAATournament in the first round, finishing 19-3 overall.

    SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

She was a key cogin the Indians’ run totheir sixth L-L Leaguechampionship andsecond District ThreeClass AAA title. Herhome run sparkedthe Indians’ district

    semifinal victory overConrad Weiser.

    The sophomore

shortstop was assteady defensivelyas she was prolificat the plate. Sheled the Indians in 10offensive categoriesthis season, includingaverage (.512), hits(43), runs scored (41),

    OVERVIEW

For Warwick, the Warriors startedoff not-so-hot, losing a thumperto Manheim Township and aheartbreaker to Lampeter-Strasburg,before going 9-3 down the stretchto finish third in the L-L standings, compete in the L-L tournament, andwin the program’s first-ever DistrictThree playoff game.

For Elizabethtown, the Bearsappeared to have the makings ofa breakout campaign by going 4-1in the L-L early on before falteringdown the stretch, but somewhatmaking up for it by upendingCocalico in overtime in late April. That put a damper on a Cocalicoseason that turned around at thecalendar’s mid-point, signified by

a two-goal win over Lampeter-Strasburg that gave the Eagles hopeof a possible berth into the L-Lplayoffs. But it would be ultimatelyL-S and Ephrata battling down thestretch for the final spot in the L-Lplayoffs, with the Mountaineerswinning the tie-breaker when theyfinished tied with the Pioneers forthe fourth and final spot in the L-Lstandings.

    Hempfield and Manheim Township

met in the L-L tournamentchampionship game, the Blue Streakswinning and going on to capture theDistrict Three title while the BlackKnights nabbed the District Threethird-place game, with both teamsputting up a fight in the state playoffs.

    Girls’ Lacrosse

    OVERVIEW

While a familiar face reigned supreme in the end, there were a few notable firsts and entertainingmatchups in the L-L this season.

Manheim Township won the regular season andL-L tournament titles again, before going on towin the program’s seventh-straight District Threetitle. But the Blue Streaks had some challengesalong the way. Most notably, the LancasterCountry Day/Lancaster Catholic/McCaskeyCougars put up a pair of strong battles. In theirregular season matchup, Manheim Township heldoff the Cougars by just a goal. This set the stagefor the L-L tournament title game, which theCougars appeared in for the first time in programhistory. The Blue Streaks needed double-overtime

    to down the Cougars, 12-11.

The L-L sent four teams to the District Threeplayoffs, with Hempfield making it to the title gamefor the first time ever, but falling there to ManheimTownship. Still, it marked the fifth time in theDistrict Three tournament’s seven years of existencethat the title game was an all-L-L matchup.

    GIRLS’ LACROSSECOACH OF THE YEAR

    Mark PinkertonManheim Township

What helped Pinkertonearn this honor was

his coaching tactic inthe quarterfinal roundof districts againstLancaster Country Day/Lancaster Catholic/McCaskey. Twice before the Blue Streaks won bya goal in a pair of nail-biters over the Cougars. In the district quarterfinals, though, the BlueStreaks rolled to a 12-7 victory. What changed?Well, instead of using speed and athleticism tooutpace the opponent — often the key to theBlue Streaks’ victories — Pinkerton had his groupslow things down and play more of a possession

game. This kept the Cougars out of strikingdistance and allowed Manheim Township toeventually go on to win the program’s seventh-straight District Three title. Had a couple thingsgone their way in the PIAA quarterfinals, the L-Lregular season and tournament champion BlueStreaks would have had a good shot at makingan appearance in the state title game.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

    Kelly DaggettLancaster Catholic

Leading your team in goals scoredis hard enough. Handling someof the face-offs and running backand forth as a midfielder on top ofgetting things done offensively iseven harder.

“She developed as a leader overthe years,” said Barbara Zeigler, who coached the Cougars the

last three seasons. “And this yearas a captain she led and workedwith our younger players, whichwas essential but crucial, too, aswe played four freshmen in mostgames.”

Daggett (82 goals, 11 assists, 57percent shooting percentage,76 draw controls, 58 groundballs, 34 caused turnovers) wasa big reason the Cougars madetheir first appearance in the L-Ltournament title game — pushing

Manheim Township to the brink —and returned to the District Threetournament, finishing 16-4 overall.

Daggett will join the Penn Statewomen’s lacrosse team nextspring.

Out of a constellation of Lancaster-Leb-anon League athletic stars, Solanco’s BoSpiller is the LNP Male Athlete of the Year.

A supernova in two sports, Spiller rattledoff 40 consecutive victories on the wrestling

mats last winter before a heart-breaking,two-point loss in the PIAA Class AAA StateChampionship final.

This just months after he anchored the de-fense of a Solanco football team that tripledits victory total from the previous year andqualified for the District Three Class AAAplayoffs for the first time since 2007.

Which was when Spiller was aDelaware County fifth-grader.He would move from New-town Square to the Southern

End when he was in seventh grade. The youngest of four children of Ed and

Rose Spiller, the Golden Mule linemanmade 71 tackles, 52 solo, including 14 tack-les for losses. He had three sacks, five quar-terback hurries and two forced fumbles.

On the mats his 40 victories included 26

falls — 85 for his career — and he added hisfirst Manheim Holiday Tournament andBeast of the East titles to his third careerMule Classic and second Penn Manor Holi-day and Escape the Rock titles.

A three-time finalist, he claimed hissecond consecutive L-L League and DistrictThree AAA championships this year.

A three-time L-L Section Two FirstTeam defensive lineman and two-time

LNP Fall All-Star, he nabbed his thirdLNP Winter All-Star nod and his

second Section One First Team All-Star selection.

His 128 career victories sit himtied for fourth on the GoldenMules’ all-time list.

We caught up with Spiller on aday when he and Thomas Hainesentertained third graders at Rob-ert Fulton Elementary, joiningthem in a day of kickball.

    LNP: Your given name is

Shawn. Where does “Bo”come from?Bo Spiller: When I was little,

like three or four, the big com-mercial was the “Bo knows”with the great Bo Jackson. I’dpick up a football and throwit and my dad would say, “BoKnows!” It kind of stuck and hekept calling me Bo after that.

LNP: How did you get, who got you, interested in wrestling?

Bo: My dad wrestled in highschool and then at Stevens

(Tech), so he got me into it when I was real-ly young. I liked it, but I didn’t love it. OnceI started getting better, I started loving it.

LNP: Define the Southern End experi-ence.

Bo: They all say it’s Hicktown, but I think

it’s one of the (most) friendly places around. You’ll be out for a run and everybody’s wav-ing to you in their car. It’s just so outgoingand welcoming. It’s a great atmosphere, agreat place to raise your kids.

LNP: You’re off to Bloomsburg this fall. What will you study?

Bo: Math education. Math is easily mybest subject. I love solving problems, I likebeing stumped and having to work throughall the steps.

LNP: So, easy question ... What teacherinfluenced you the most?

Bo: I’d probably say my math teacher, Mr.Chris Rocker. Just the way he teaches, theway he interacts with kids made me want tobe a math teacher.

LNP: What’s your favorite Monopolygame piece?

Bo: I like the boot. That’s the one I’vealways had.

LNP: PB&J, Fluffernutter, or the ElvisClassic?

    Bo:I’dsaypeanutbutterandjelly.Coach(John)Little alwaysgot the“Uncrustables”everytournamentandtheykindof growonyou,yougettolike‘ema lot.
