Coach of the Year RYAN JECKEL, Manheim CentralThat a rival coach would call the Barons “outstanding from top to bottom,’’ is a testament to Ryan Jeckel’s effort with Manheim Central, which claimed the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two title. Jeckel helped guide the doubles team of Drew Wolgemuth and brother Colin, who finished third in the District Three Class AA Tournament and earned a berth at states.

Boys’Tennis

Undefeated during the regular season, Jody Sambrick advanced to the Lancaster-

Lebanon League Class AAA singles final and successfully defended his 2010 title

with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Cedar Crest’s Wes Fortna. Ranked as the top seed in

the District Three Class AAA Tournament, Sambrick was shocked in the semifinals

by Manheim Township’s Jack Barry but battled back to defeat Cumberland Valley’s

Andrew Grossman and earn a berth in the PIAA AAA Singles Tournament.

STEVE GINDER, Manheim CentralIn his third season at the helm of Manheim Central softball, Steve Ginder coached the Barons to the ultimate game of the scholastic season: the PIAA Class AAA state championship game. The Barons hit the reset button after falling in the L-L title game and ran the table in the District Three Class AAA tournament, defeating Donegal for the title, 3-1. Making its third state playoff appearance, and first since 1986, Manheim won three more times to get to the state championship, where the Barons fell to Valley, 3-1.

Emily Detz put an exclamation point on a stellar career with a senior season for the ages. She was at the forefront as the Crimson Tide posted a best-ever 18-5 record, winning its first Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Four championship. In 149 innings of work Detz pitched five no-hitters, including three perfect games, and posted an earned run average of 0.96 while throwing 10 shutouts. She held opponents to a .137 batting average, issuing 24 walks while striking out 213 batters. Leading off in the Tide lineup she hit .458 with an on-base percentage of .540 and a slugging average of .736.

Guiding a pair of sophomores, outside hitter Josiah Hershberger and settter Robbie Lawyer, were keys to Dietrich’s and the Barons’ success this season.

Up front or from the back row, Snyder could find the floor on the other side of the net with precision and pace. Big-game performer.There isn’t a better

compliment than that for an athlete and Manheim Town-

ship’s Quint Miller is the quintessential big-game performer. Pun intended.

“My dad always says big-time players step up in big time games,” explained Miller, whose given name is Frank Miller V.

And he did, more than once. Wheth-er it was a crucial first down on the gridiron in the fall or a goal or two on the field in the spring, Miller answered the call for big plays time and again.

His knack for big plays was just an exclamation point on a scholastic career that garnered him two all-state nods and three all-league honors in

football and three all-league selections, co-player of the year and All-American in lacrosse.

“I’m real honored to achieve all of that,” said Miller. “It wasn’t something that I strived for, so to achieve it feels pretty good.”

Miller can add one more award to his already growing list:

Lancaster Newspapers 2011 Male Athlete of the Year.

Miller was selected over a strong list of other worthy athletes that included the Solanco trio of Joe Welk (football, wrestling), Dan Neff (wres-tling) and Thomas Haines (wrestling), Warwick’s Deron Thompson (football, basketball),

Hempfield’s Kyle Long (track), Manheim Central’s Derek Hart (foot-ball, basketball and track) and Cones-toga Valley’s Robbie Cardina (soccer, football, basketball and track).

Miller’s favorite sport is lacrosse and he’ll continue playing it next

year at Division I Jacksonville University. It was in lacrosse, a sport his father Frank IV played, where Miller received

his big-game reputation.He started his career as

a freshman with a game-winning overtime goal in the district championship game and followed that season by leading the league in scoring as a sophomore and junior.

“Quint is good because his shot is better than most play-ers,” MT coach Kyle Wimer

explained. “That’s because he always has a stick in his hand

trying to get better.”Miller, who will be an alter-

nate on the U19 national team, finished his career stepping up big again in the postseason where he averaged four goals per game in eight postseason contests. He

highlighted that run with five straight goals in the district

championship game that helped the Streaks to an overtime win.

“He knows when he has to kick it in to an extra gear,” Wimer said of Miller, who finished his career with 250 goals and 84 assists. “He knows when it’s time to get a goal. In big-time

games it shows what an athlete he is to step up when the limelight is on with a big-time goal.”

In his four seasons, Miller’s teams won 83 games, reached the Keystone Cup (state final), struck district gold three times and league gold twice.

Miller played football for “fun” but made an equal impact in the fall as he did in the spring.

“He was one those kids that you would find a way to get him the ball,” MT coach Mike Melynk said. “We put him in the Razorback to snap it to him directly, we handed it off to him and threw it to him. We put in different plays just to get him the ball.”

Miller made the most of his touches by leading Section One with 56 catches for 850 yards. He hit paydirt 12 times and was the third highest scorer in the section. He was best, though, when punting the ball and was named to the all-state team twice.

“I think he would be a Division I-AA player as a skilled guy,” says Melynk. “If he chose punting he would be Divi-sion I easily.”

Miller’s best trait is probably his even-mannered personality. In two sports where testosterone and ego usually gets the best of people, Miller keeps his mouth closed and lets his play do the talking.

“I don’t see a reason to get into it with opponents,” Miller said. “I just want to play.”

Said Melynk, “His character is beyond reproach. I’ve never heard a player, coach or teacher say a bad word about Quint. He did the right things and it’s nice to see a kid recog-nized for athletic achievements, but it’s better because he is a good person.”

She is, one coach said, definite-ly the “Total Package.’’

Those two words, issued by Hall of Fame field hockey coach

Bob Derr of Warwick, are about as perfect as you can get when describing Donegal’s Laura Gebhart.

Gebhart, who signed with Penn State to continue her academic and field hockey careers, is, according to Derr, “probably one of the best players to come out of the L-L as long as I have been coaching (28 years). She is highly skilled on both sides of the ball and she is so versatile in that she could play any position and do it well.’’

A three-sport star for the Indians (field hockey, basketball, softball), and four-year starter in hockey and soft-ball, Gebhart was named the Lancaster Newspapers 2011 Female Athlete of the Year.

She beat out a strong field that included Cocalico’s Jordan Page (field hockey, basketball, soccer), the Penn Manor duo of Maddy Hess (field hockey, basketball, lacrosse) and Katie Brene-man (field hockey, basketball, soccer) and Warwick’s Emily Cameron (swim-ming).

“There is no one more deserv-ing of this award then Laura. Great choice,’’ Wayne Emenheiser, Donegal’s softball coach, wrote in an email.

“Laura is the ultimate team player, always sup-porting and encouraging her team-mates. I have seen in more than one instance over the past few years her pull aside a

teammate and calm them down after a mistake and show that teammate that she believes in them to get the job done,’’ Emenheiser added.

Perhaps the best judge of Gebhart’s abilities as a player and person was her scholastic field hockey coach, Jessica Shellenberger.

“I guess one of the best ways to sum up who Laura Gebhart is, is to open the year book,’’ Shellenberger wrote in an email. “Laura is in absolutely every club and activity we offer at Donegal. She is truly a jack-of-all-trades: An outstand-ing athlete, student and person, deeply respected and admired by all.’’

Gebhart has earned the respect of opponents and coaches alike by her tire-less work ethic, her unparalleled abili-ties on the field, and her even-tempered approach to school and athletics.

Her list of accomplishments on the field hockey pitch are extraordinary and reached beyond the borders of Lancaster County to the national and international level.

“Laura’s the type of player that you dream about. She encompasses a combination of ath-leticism, intelligence, passion, determination and tenacity. She has helped to put our program on the map and we are truly in-debted to her contributions,’’ added Shellenberger, who had Gebhart lead the Indians to the 2008 L-L League and 2009 District Three Class AA titles.

“Laura’s hockey career has taken her away from us for long stretches during the season more than once, and when she returns the girls are always excited to see her and get her back in the lineup (no jealousy),’’ Emen-heiser wrote.

“In fact, this past season she was away for the L-L League championship game (a 2-1 Donegal win over Manheim Central) and the first two games of dis-tricts. The (rest of the) girls’ motto was to keep winning until Laura gets back.

They did not want the season to end at all, but absolutely not without her being there.’’

While Shellenberger and Emenheiser said they will both miss Gebhart’s con-tributions to their teams, they’re just go-ing to miss what Gebhart brings outside the lines as well.

“As a person there is no one better,’’ Emenheiser said of Gebhart, who was the recipient of the L-L League’s A. Landis Brackbill Award for academic/athletic achievement. “I will miss her positive, mature attitude next year along with the friendship we have built over the years.’’

Added Shellenberger: “I’m going to miss having Laura on field but also as a member of my team. She makes every-thing better just by being herself. She’s an amazing young woman and I can’t wait to see where life takes her.’’

Gebhart truly was the total package.

CURT ROGERS, HempfieldHempfield’s Curt Rogers led the Black Knights to Section One, L-L League Meet, District Three Meet and PIAA Class AAA team titles. It was just Hempfield’s second PIAA team title in school history, but its second in three years as the Knights have enjoyed a successful run in Rogers’ two years guiding the boys’ team.

at districts before ending his scholastic career with

a seventh-place finish in the state Class AAA 1,600 in

4:17.80 as the Knights won their second team title in

school history.
