    REACHING THE SUMMIT

Solanco’s Bo Spiller, pictured on the cover, and Lancaster Catholic’sJoe Lobeck, above right, advanced to wrestling’s ultimate match intheir weight classes. While neither could grab gold, their journeyswere extraordinary. Spiller’s 40 wins and Lobeck’s 41 proved that bothwere among the best wrestlers in the state. The postseason road takenby the McCaskey boys’ basketball team had its share of thrills as didthe postseason appearances of the boys’ basketball teams from CedarCrest, Manheim Central and Columbia, as well as the Cedar Crest andLebanon Catholic girls’ teams. Manheim Central’s Matt Daniel andManheim Township’s Meredith Newman swam to district gold and theCocalico girls’ swim team finished second in a field of 27 AAA teams atthe District Three meet. Ben White got hot in the postseason, winningthe L-L League Singles and District Three Singles bowling titles in

back-to-back weeks. Katelyn Martin claimed the girls’ L-L Leaguebowling championship. Shooter Julia Irvin improved last season’stop-notch rifle average of 98.9 to a remarkable 99.8, doing so withreserved focus and determination.

Note:  Throughout this section, some All-Starselections were made by reporters covering that

particular sport. In other cases, the selections weremade by a vote of the sport’s coaches.

    MARKSWOMAN OF THE YEAR

Julia Irvin capped a remarkable scholastic careerwith the top average in the Lancaster-LebanonRifle League. She earned a top 10 ranking in eachof her four years.

“Julia understands the sport very well andknows what it takes to shoot consistently,’’ saidGarden Spot coach Alan Houck.

Irvin finished second in the postseasonindividual tournament last season, edgedout by Manheim Central’s Elizabeth Hess in a

“shoot-off.’’“I believe that her goal was to be the ‘Top Shot’or Markswoman of the Year,’’ Houck said. “Shecame in every day with a bright, ‘Hi, Coach’attitude. She just liked to be here, have fun withthe team. But when it was her line to shoot, thegame face was on and she shot well.’’

Irvin’s success carried over from practice to eachleague match. She shot over 145 targets in practice(over 90 were 100s), sometimes shooting threeto four sets of double targets a night. Her practiceaverage was a 99.54, which Houck termed crazygood. He season average is 99.8.

“Julia has been a great student/athlete, leader, team captain and just all-around great kid towork with these past four years,’’ Houck said.

The 2014-15 wrestling season featured a spirited battle, a final push to the top of themountain and the continuation of a great turnaround.

In what may be one of the best coaching efforts by Solanco’s staff of head coach John Littleand assistants Tony Mendez and Scott Perdue, the Golden Mules won their sixth straightSection One title, the Mules’ 15th overall and 11th outright.

Picked to finish behind favorite Penn Manor and Hempfield in the section race, Little andcompany maneuvered the pieces on the chessboard season long to get favorable matchups, resulting in an unbeaten season. A season capped by a exciting 38-37 criteria victory overPenn Manor that sealed the section title.

Two seasons after earning its first section title, shared with Garden Spot and Manheim Central,

Conestoga Valley secured its first outright section crown with an unbeaten run throughSection Two. Taking the measure of up-and-coming contender, and eventual runner-upCocalico, 38-24, in the season opener, the Buckskins wrapped their most successful season onthe mats with a resounding 61-3 victory over third-place Garden Spot. The Bucks competed inthe District Three Class AAA Team Championships and finished the year with a 16-5 record.

The roller-coaster climb continues in Fredericksburg. Three seasons removed from losing 34 of35 section matches, Northern Lebanon won its third consecutive Section Three championship, its fourth section title overall, and extended its streak of 18 straight wins within the section. The Vikings finished 15-4 overall, placing second in the District Three Class AA TeamChampionships and reaching the third day of the PIAA State Team Championship weekend.

Penn Manor finished 15-4, winning a match at the District AAA Team Championships. TheComets were one of nine L-L teams with double-digit wins, including Elco (20), Hempfield(15), Warwick (14), Cocalico (13), Annville-Cleona (11) and McCaskey (10).

Speaking of victories: Six L-L wrestlers joined the 100-victory club this season: NorthernLebanon’s Caeleb Blatt (133), Lancaster Catholic’s Joe Lobeck (130), Solanco’s Bo Spiller (129),Annville-Cleona’s Matt Darok (125) and Josh Renninger (113) and Warwick’s Devin Schnupp (112).

While familiar faces hoisted the league trophies this season, there werea few surprises in the L-L League.

Top section honors went to Manheim Township and Cocalico, but

Township had to hold off the Eagles in a battle for the leaguechampionship that the Blue Streaks won by only eight points.

Both teams were the talk of the postseason as Township’s MeredithNewman was one of just two area swimmers to win two gold medals atdistricts, taking the 50 (23.27) and 100 (51.10) freestyles.

Despite having just five girls competing at Cumberland Valley, Cocalicowalked away with two go ld, two silver and two bronze medals. Ledby senior co-captains Sidney Evans and Sam Marino, two Eagles’ relayteams — the 200 medley and the 400 freestyle — qualified for states, marking the first time a Cocalico relay team made it to Bucknell since2008.

Leading the AA field was Donegal’s Sydney Wareham, who won the 100

freestyle (52.82) before finishing fifth in the event at states (52.77).In diving, Hempfield’s Paige Schoelkopf took third at districts (418.30)before improving on last year’s state finish by two spots (12th, 369.60).
