Project Lift UniversitySARATOGA SPRINGS - To Benefi t The Franklin Community Center. October 17, 2013, 6pm-9pm. Come to Longfellows for this one-of-a-kind event and get nostalgic about your college days. This academic-inspired evening will allow event-goers to register for “classes” with tal-ented local professionals, who will act as “professors” by donating their time to teach a class (classes will be scheduled for a later date, so bring your calendar). Attendees who sign up for classes will pay the “registration fee”, but instead of paying the “professor”, all proceeds will benefi t Project Lift. It’s a great way to sign up for a topic that interests you, while also making a difference in the lives of local kids! (Please note: the classes will have a set fee with a designated number of slots available for attendees [it will vary by class]. It is not a bidding war. Once the slots are full, the class will be pulled. Sign-up will be on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis.) Tickets are priced at $75 for the event, which includes beer, wine, music by KID DJ and food by Longfel-lows. Traditional silent, live and mission based auctions will also be held. Ticket Prices: $75 – 1 ticket / $140 – 2 tickets; $50 – juniors ticket (under 30). For more information call 587-9826.

Recently Retired And Looking for Meaningful Volunteer Work?SARATOGA REGION - I am I can is a 501(c)3 orga-nization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed en-couragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female men-tors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relation-ship that provides support and guidance. If you are a recent-ly retired woman looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentor-ing, but more on providing a positive role model in the stu-dent’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young wom-en to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibili-ties while empowering them to make it happen”. The or-ganization is currently look-ing for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Im-mediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email Avon@scherf-fi nsurance.com.

I hope you all are fi nding the time to get outside and enjoy the show that Mother Na-ture provides this time of year. Of course, along with that show, comes the annual chore of rak-ing leaves. When you fi nd yourself feeling overwhelmed by this chore, it might help to remind yourself that the topsoil we need to grow our food, fl owers and trees comes from eons and eons of leaves that grow, fall and decay, gradually creating the soil we take so for granted. Because our viewpoint is so limited (after all we only live for a mere 80 years or so), it’s easy to overlook this miraculous process. If you’re a gardener, the leaves should be considered a resource rather than a nuisance. Think about it. Here you have all this material that the trees pulled from deep in the soil and used to create leaves. The elements found in the leaves have been refi ned as they passed from the soil through the trees and now these elements have been deposited on the surface. The beauty of all this is that the material contained in these leaves can be recycled and reused by other plants. Yes, I’m talking about composting. You can turn the leaves directly into your vegetable garden or compost them in a bin with other vegetable matter. I notice that some of you cleverly compost them in the woods behind your house or across the street. Even if you let the town col-lect them, they’ll be composted by the foresighted folks at the county farm. Those of you with mulching mowers will compost them right back into the lawn. Waste not, want not.

This is the time of year that I like to collect seeds from any annuals that I want to repro-duce next year. At the end of a dry day, I collect the mature seedpods from some of my favorites and put them into envelopes for storage. Cosmos, cleome, marigolds and my purple amaranthus all go into the collection. I also gather the seeds of perennials that grow easily from seed like conefl owers and gallardia. There is always such an abundance of seeds that I like to scatter what I don’t save into outlying areas of the yard or down the long driveway. Sometimes they come up, sometimes not but when they do, it’s always a treat.

By the time you’re reading this, we may have had our killing frost. If not, then it will be very soon. Once that happens, it will be time to rescue all the non-hardy bulbs and tubers that we planted in spring. Gladiolus, acidanthera, dahlias, cannas and others must be rescued and stored. Many folks shy away from non-hardy tuberous garden fl owers because of “all the hassle” of digging them up and storing them. It IS a bit of work but, considering the contribution these lovely plants make to the summer fl owerbeds, the work involved is minimal. Besides, they increase in size and number with each season so you’re rewarded with more to plant and share with gardening friends.

Rescuing the plants is simply a matter of popping them out of the ground (“lifting” is the term gardening types like to use) with a trowel or shovel. After they’ve air-dried, any loose soil should be shaken or brushed (not washed) from them. After cutting off the dead foliage, I’ll dust them with a bulb dust to help prevent rotting. This I accomplish by putting a little of the dust in a paper bag, adding the bulbs and shaking, (ala shake & bake). Once they’re dusted, I’ll place my bulb collection into paper bags or cardboard shoeboxes fi lled with dry, sterile POTTING SOIL. You could use peat moss or wood shavings instead but I prefer sterile potting soil since it lessens the chance of rot during storage. Avoid airtight, plastic containers for storage. Plastic containers won’t allow your dormant bulbs and tubers to “breathe” properly. Once they’re all boxed and bagged, I’ll place the collection in a cool location that doesn’t freeze over winter. Once or twice during the winter, I’ll take my collection out to move them around and check for dryness. If they seem to be drying out, I’ll mist them with water, allow them to dry and place them back into storage. There really isn’t much work involved so when you see summer fl ower-ing bulbs offered in the garden centers in spring (when they’re generally available), be brave and try a few. It’s well worth the little effort you’ll expend.

Just one little tip before I run out of space. If you have an area of your lawn that you want to start or thicken up, consider “dormant seeding”. The idea is to wait until the weather gets so cold that there is no chance of grass seed sprouting (but before the snow falls) and apply grass seed. This may sound crazy but here’s the idea. Your late application of grass seed will lie out there all winter without sprouting. Snow and rain will beat the seed down through the grass blades to the surface of the soil. Since the seed will be soaking all winter, it will sprout with the fi rst warm weather next spring. Don’t worry about the freezing weather harming the grass seed. Grass grown in a natural state (not mowed) would grow tall and produce a crop of seed. This seed would then fall to the ground and sprout the following spring. We mow our lawns so the grass plants never get the chance to produce a crop of seed. By adding seed late in the season, you’re providing that crop. It’s an easy way to thicken up thin areas without having to waste time in the spring dragging hoses around trying to keep the seed moist. Try it…it works. Thanks for the read.

Let These Films Satisfy Your Need For Speed Car guys and gals love their vehicles, but they also love their movies about cars. When not tool-ing around in your ride this spring and summer, the following car movies should satisfy your need for speed.

Bullitt (1968): Steve McQueen stars as the San Francisco cop looking to fi nd the kingpin who killed the witness under his protection. The actor did much of the driving of the ‘68 Mustang in this movie, leaving only the riskiest maneuvers to his stunt double.

American Graffi ti (1973): A coming of age movie set in the 1960s about four teenagers going off to college. They spend one last summer cruising the Sunset Strip and getting into trouble. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford and Ron Howard, this classic was directed by George Lucas of “Star Wars” fame.

The Cannonball Run (1983): Eccentric competitors engage in an illegal cross-country car race. A who’s who of stars, including Burt Reynolds, Jackie Chan, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, and Dean Martin star in this action-packed fl ick.

Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000): A retired car thief must get back into the business, stealing 50 cars in one night to save the life of his brother. Stars Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie.

The Fast and the Furious (2001): An undercover cop infi ltrates the underbelly of Los Ange-les street racers. This movie spawned a series of sequels with more automotive special effects than substance.

Did You Know? There are different times in a driver’s life when he or she may have to pull over on the side of the road. Whether a fl at tire has derailed the trip, the driver or a passenger is experiencing motion sickness or you fi nd the car isn’t per-forming correctly and it war-rants a look under the hood, pulling over on the shoulder may be necessary.

It can be diffi cult to pull over smoothly and safely on a busy highway, especially when you are in a stressful situation, such as a mechanical emergency. But it is in your best interest to remain calm and follow a few procedures. First, slow down and put on your right-turn signal to indicate you will need to move into the right lane. Some people prefer to put their four-way-fl ashers on after they have successfully cleared the lanes and are ready to navigate onto the shoulder. Try to select a spot where you are not on a bend or where there is poor visibility or your vehicle cannot be seen by other drivers on the highway. You do not want to be injured while exiting or attempt-ing to work on the pulled-over vehicle. Drivers should keep an emergency roadside assistance preparedness kit containing fl ares, emergency triangles or cones, a fl ashlight, batteries, a poncho, booster cables, duct tape, a utility knife, cord, a blan-ket, and fi rst aid supplies in the car as a precaution. Each item serves its own unique purpose.

The Canadian Automobile Association recommends staying inside the vehicle, especially on a busy road. Tow trucks and police vehicles typically cruise busy stretches of road and help may arrive in a matter of minutes. Those who have a roadside assistance plan membership can use a cell phone to make a call for help. It is best to wait in the car until a tow truck or police arrive.
