Longwood Social Studies fosters growth of Global Citizens

invisible children• Raised close to $10,000

to go towards the building of a school in war-torn Uganda

• Collected over 50,000 books to help aid this same school in Uganda

• Educated students on the plight of their peers in other countries

• Grade level teams meet weekly to improve and develop reflective teaching practices

• Improving upon the successful relationship with the English Department through the Humanities Block

• Humanities Project creates strong connection between Social Studies, English and the Library

• Developing a cross-curricular relationship with the LOTE Department.

• Collaborative Inclusion Training between Social Studies Teachers and Special Ed. Teachers.

• Ongoing training to develop excellence in the use of technology in our student’s lives

• Supporting common themes of Human Rights as a thematic approach in our Social Studies classrooms

Initiatives Set Forth by the Social Studies Department

• Analyze Regents results to ensure that our curriculum closely aligns with NYS Standards-Working with BOCES to help improve our statistical analysis of data

• Reviewing current course materials in an effort to choose the most appropriate new text books, creating interactive technology based support resources

• Introducing Online Textbooks, examine the use of Podcasts, Video Conferencing in the future

• Registering students to vote / Field trip to vote

• Participating in the review of the relevancy and / or implementation of new technology, Development of the most technologically competent department in our district

• Building upon the shared file drive, using technology to share resources and build on them. Electronic submission of lesson plans

• Use of Lap Top Computer Carts in common planning, develop podcasts and videography as a form of student work.

• Promoting Future Technologies-Development of the LGI-Large Group Instruction

• Video conferencing

• Class to class connection

• Focus on Student created Presentations

Support Technological Innovation

• The Social Studies department is leading the new effort to transform the Large Group Instruction (LGI) Room into an instructional environment that mirrors that of the nations leading universities.

Some changes to the LGI Room include:

•Installation of new carpet

•Repair of all desks and chairs

•New Ceiling to dampen noise levels

•State of the Art Computer

•High Definition Projector

•2 Plasma Monitors

•Video Conferencing Technology
