Disaster Management• A natural disaster is a major adverse
event resulting from natural processes of the Earth
• Examples include floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other geologic processes. A natural disaster can cause loss of life or property damage, and typically leaves some economic damage in its wake, the severity of which depends on the affected population's resilience, or ability to recover.
Floods• A flood is an overflow of water that
submerges land which is usually dry. The European Union Floods Directive defines a flood as a covering by water of land not normally covered by water. In the sense of "flowing water", the word may also be applied to the inflow of the tide. Flooding may occur as an overflow of water from water bodies, such as a river or lake, in which the water overtops or breaks levees, resulting in some of that water escaping its usual boundaries,
Effects of Floods• The primary effects of flooding include loss of
life, damage to buildings and other structures, including bridges, sewerage systems, roadways and canals.
• Economic hardship due to a temporary decline in tourism, rebuilding costs, or food shortages leading to price increases is a common after-effect of severe flooding. The impact on those affected may cause psychological damage to those affected, in particular where deaths, serious injuries and loss of property
Precautions taken while flood• Do not walk through moving water. As little as
6 inches of moving water can make you fall.• If you have to walk in water, wherever
possible, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.• Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters
rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely.• Do not touch electrical equipment if you are
wet or standing in water.
Causes of FloodsRivers can overflow their banks to cause flooding. Each time there are more rains than the drainage
system can take, there can be floods.Sea water can be carried by massive winds and
hurricanes onto dry coastal lands and cause flooding.
Dams are man-made blocks mounted to hold water flowing down from a highland.
In many cold regions, heavy snow over the winter usually stays un-melted for sometime. There are also mountains that have ice on top of them.

Drought• A drought is a period of below-average
precipitation in a given region, resulting in prolonged shortages in its waters supply, whether atmospheric, surface or ground water. A drought can last for months or years, or may be declared after as few as 15 days. It can have a substantial impact on the ecosystem and agriculture of the affected region. Although droughts can persist for several years, even a short, intense drought can cause significant damage and harm to the local economy.
Effects of drought• Drought can have many devastating effects on communities
and the surrounding environment. The amount of devastation depends on the strength of the drought and the length of time an area is considered to be in drought conditions. Drought has greater impacts on poorer communities than on more prosperous communities who have better opportunities to bring in resources from other areas.
• One impact of drought on communities is its effect on water supply. When drought conditions persist with no relief, or not enough precipitation to lift the drought conditions, water restrictions are put into place by local or state governments. This is important since communities need to ration water consumption so that the reservoirs and streams do not run too low on water to meet the needs of utility companies and others who use water as well as the local ecosystems.
Precautions to be taken while droughtDetermine the optimum stocking rate.Develop a marketing plan that will make
money when reducing stocking rate.Develop a hay storage plan.Develop a relocation plan for the base
herd to an area not affected by drought. Before a drought to reduce risk exposure
to droughts. During a drought to minimize the
damage caused be the drought.
