A Note from the Club President. . .

In a couple of months, it will be time to determine who our MEMBER OF THE YEAR for 2010 will be. Selection is based on a point system that reflects the member’s participation in club activities during the year. Not surprisingly, last year’s MOY was Carl “Snake” Saunders, and it will be interesting to see who will take the honor this year at our December meeting. All points must be documented, so always remember to sign in at every meeting and event or post an image taken at the event to the appropriate gallery on the club’s website.

Here’s a reminder of just how the points are awarded:

• 1 point for attending a regular club meeting (business meetings excluded)• 2 points for presenting a 1-hour program at a regular club meeting• 3 points for presenting a 2-hour workshop (not at a regular club meeting)• 1 point for each entry in the club’s print competitions• 1 point for each entry in Online Monthly Competition (limit 1 entry/month)• 2 points for participating in a field trip or workshop scheduled by the club• 1 point per month(maximum) for participating in a regular photo Safari • 1 point for each makeup Safari (maximum two makeup Safaris in a month

if no field trip/workshop points are awarded)*

Safari Rules: Safaris are member-coordinated events planned with the intention of taking photographs. These events may be organized by any club member at any time, but at least 3 members must participate for the Safari to count. All participants in the Safari must have at least one image posted on the Safari gallery on the clubʼs website. * A maximum of 3 points per member per month will be awarded for field trip, workshop and Safari participation. A member can earn 2 points for a field trip/workshop and 1 point for a regular Safari for the 3 points, or they can earn the 3 points by participating in 1 regular Safari and 2 Makeup Safaris.

Meeting Minutes - August 10Club President Sue Sizemore opened the meeting by welcoming members and seven guests. Sue announced that this meeting was a competition meeting with categories of “Open” and “Abstract”. She introduced Billy Birchfield, photographer for Caffco, Intl. as the Judge for the competition. Winners were reminded to email their images to Chuck Rice.

The competition included 12 prints for Novice Abstract, 12 prints for Novice Open, six prints in Advanced Abstract and six prints in Advanced Open.

Following the competition, refreshments were provided by Mit Fontaine, Caryl Lawson and Pamela Long.

After the break, Sue announced the upcoming workshop would be held August 14, 9:00 a.m. at Faulkner University. The workshop will be conducted by Faulkner photographer Ryan Bartels.

Caryl Lawsonʼs image, Pride and Patriotism, was announced as the winner of the July on-line competition. Members voted for Wood as the on-line theme for September (Aug 15 – Sep 30).

Diana Bunch (speaking for the program committee) asked if the membership at large would be opposed to having a meeting where the more experienced photographers would help the newer members learn how to improve their photographic skills especially in the ways of preparing prints for entering competition and displaying the prints. No opposition was raised.

Jackie Webber announced that Alabama State University will have a photo exhibit October 15, 2010 through November 19, 2010. The theme will be Black & White Photography.

Sue led a discussion on the Christmas party to be held in December. The members voted to have a pot-luck supper at the December meeting held at Eastmont Baptist.

Next Business Meeting is August 23, 2010, Eastmont Baptist. Next Member Meeting is September13, 2010.

Aleah Goode won the door prize drawing.

Cathryn Crumpton, Jennifer Patrick and Rhonda Ward became members.

Meeting Minutes - September 13Club President Sue Sizemore called the meeting to order and introduced 4 guests and 2 new members. The new members are Jan Gill and Debra Padgett.

Sue reminded the members that Bryan Hassler and Darryl Spaulding will provide refreshments for the October meeting, but we still need two members to provide refreshments at the November meeting. Jackie Webber and Betty Beasley volunteered. A sign-up sheet for volunteers for 2011 refreshments was also circulated.

Participants in the field trip to Callaway Gardens will meet at the Brunos parking lot located at I-85 (Mitylene) Exit 11 at 8:00 am to carpool or caravan.

"LIQUID TURQUOISE" won the August Online Competition.  Sue reminded the members to go online now that this competition is over and identify their images. Members voted for “THE COLOR ORANGE” as the theme for the October Online Competition. Photos must be taken Sep 15-Oct 31. Members were also reminded that membership dues must be current to be eligible to enter any club competitions.

Deadline to turn in prints for the Alabama National Fair photography competition is Sep 23 at 3:00 pm to Capitol Filmworks on Forest Avenue. This year the photography display area has been moved to the Cultural Arts Center building located behind the Coliseum.

The Alabama State University Black & White Photo Exhibition is Oct 15-Nov 19 in the Warren-Britt Gallery. Cleve Webber, the gallery curator, has requested standard gallery exhibit preparation:   white or off-white mat, framed and ready to hang.   Members may bring prints to the Oct 11 meeting and Sue will get them to Cleve at ASU. We are planning an opening reception on Friday evening, Oct 15, at a time to be determined. Refreshments will be proviided by club members. WSFA-TV may provide news coverage since Jackie Webber currently has some interns working there. The CAPS Photo Club (Wetumpka) and Shades Valley Photo Club in Birmingham are also invited to participate in the exhibit.

The door prize, a book on Photoshop Plug-Ins, was won by Jennifer Brown.

The members paused for a break. with refreshments provided by Renette and Roger Jodoin. Following a member-led program on “Preparing Prints for Competition and Exhibition” the meeting was adjourned.

Ryan Bartels provided an outstanding studio lighting workshop for our members. From explaining the intricacies of setting up lights, reflectors, background screens, and even the best sources to purchase equipment, Ryan hit the ground running and provided nonstop information and opportunities for a great hands-on learning experience.

Thanks to Aleah Goode and Caryl Lawson for setting up this excellent event with a very talented photographer and the perfect model!

CCCC Field Trip - October 16, 2010

Alabama Frontier DaysThe most authentic Living History event in the state, Alabama Frontier Days is a reenactment of Alabama's 18-19th century from French Colonial times to the early American period. Includes Native American reenactors, period traders, merchants and entertainers. Alabama Frontier Days is a wonderful opportunity to see the unique culture of the South as it was transformed from Creek Indian lands to pioneer settler forts and homesteads during the period of 1700 to 1820. French Fort Toulouse will be occupied by a full force of authentically costumed French Colonial Marines and a War of 1812 camp will be set up next to Fort Jackson. We have also scheduled various demonstrations and period entertainments. A partial list of the demonstrations includes:

PRINT COMPETITIONS

The Capital City Camera Club holds print competitions for members five times a year. Each competition night includes a themed category and an open category for both advanced and novice entries. Themes are chosen each year by the Competition Committee. Recent competitions have included portraits, architecture, still life, animals, and many others. The winners of those competitions are posted in our competition galleries. Winners are awarded ribbons for First, Second & Third Place and Honorable Mention. At the end of the year, one winning print is chosen as "Print of the Year." Join the club and enter your prints in the next competition.
