But along with that awareness we strive to equip them with the spiritual tools they will need to continue listening for God’s call for the rest of their lives. During the past year we offered a collection of programs intended to assist students in drawing closer to God through the discernment of their personal gifts and their vocation. Funded in part by a $12,000 grant from the Fund for Theological Education, the programs broke open the notion of “calling” with students in a variety of settings. The SMU True Callings project was a particularly innovative approach designed to share inspirational stories from around campus about discovering one’s “true calling.” Two students - Kylie O’Donnell and Andrés Ruzo - shared their experiences of coming to know the paths by which God was leading them. The stories of Fr. Tony Lackland, Dr. Steve Rankin, SMU’s new University Chaplain, and Ellen Pryor, law professor and associate provost, were also captured in short videos posted at www.smutruecallings.org. Watch them for yourself and join the conversation happening on Facebook to share your own story of discovering your True Calling. In addition to the SMU True Callings project, a whole host of programs carried the theme of calling and vocation to a wide range of students. During Lent, a dozen students took advantage of the Busy Students’ Retreat funded by a grant from the Serra Club of Metropolitan Dallas. Each met for four days with a spiritual director for 30 minutes, learning to listen for God in the ordinary experiences of their lives. Students who participated were grateful for the guidance and asked for ongoing opportunities to continue in spiritual direction. Seniors spent Monday nights sharing their hopes for life after graduation at Last Call, a faith formation group exclusively for seniors that looks at living with purpose after college. Students interested in serving in a leadership role in the ministry took part in a 4-week process called, Live Your Calling. The process was intended to help students discover their personal experience of God and to identify their natural strengths for service and relationships. More than 35 students participated in the process which included a retreat. At its completion, most chose to serve as FYSH leaders, mass captains, Awakening team members and after-school tutors, just to name a few. (continued on page 5) Annual Report Confirmation 2010

While no one will ever confuse the Neuhoff Catholic Center with the Hegi Family Career Development Center, a lasting gift we leave our students with is an abiding awareness of the truth that God calls to each of us to serve and love Him and one another.

Frederick Buechner famously described vocation this way, “The place God calls you is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” Sometimes our vocation can find an outlet in a “day job”, but vocation is not fully contained in any one part of our life, it is a way of life that cuts across all of our relationships, family life and religious practice. A vocation is a calling that we listen for in the everyday rhythms of our life, not something we are handed out of the clouds on a mountaintop. It is discerned not chosen. And because vocation is always about how we are called to use our gifts to serve others, discernment does not happen in isolation, it requires an active community tuned to the ongoing work of hearing God’s call. We must pray together and read the scriptures and spiritual writings, not so much in search of answers, but to create the opportunities where our heart grows closer to God’s. We must reflect on our lives daily, because our awareness of our calling evolves and deepens over time with every step we take to live it out. We must seek the input of people who know us deeply. Most of all, in all of this, we must learn to listen – listen for the often maddeningly quiet voice of the Holy Spirit who speaks from the depth of our hearts and in the midst our own experiences, in the concerned words of those who love us and in the ancient wisdom of our faith-stories. Our work among the students and community at SMU is to ensure that students learn these habits before they leave so they can spend the rest of their lives loving and serving the Lord and one another.

he SMU Neuhoff Catholic Center has been consistently doing more and more to get involved with the surrounding community. One of the programs that stand out is Service Saturday. Service Saturday provides an opportunity for students to bring our faith alive, through using our hands and feet to work with those in need. Service Saturday is also part of SMU Catholic’s Lenten FIVE Challenge. It is designed to bring the Catholic community out of its comfort zone and

give each student a greater understanding of each other and a sense of human compassion. One of the Saturday Service projects this year was working with the Habitat for Humanity work site in the Dallas area. Habitat for Humanity is a social program designed to give aid to those who are struggling with finances without giving anything away for free. The program requires that in addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor, what Habitat calls “sweat equity”, into building their house and the houses of others. Once the building is done the site leaders dedicate the house to the well deserved family. At the end of the building process, the site leaders dedicate the house, built by the community, to the family in need. SMU Catholic partnered with the SMU chapter of Habitat for Humanity, other student organizations on campus, as well as Highland Park United Methodist Church in building the Habitat House. Meeting at the Catholic Center at the early hour of 7:30 on a Saturday morning had students weary about the experience, but after meeting the energetic on-site coordinators, as well as having some much needed coffee and donuts, spirits quickly soared. The students worked on the final stages of building a house in South Dallas, spackling nail-holes and caulking external wood seams to prepare the home to be painted. Students work side by side with fellow SMU students, Dallas-area volunteers, Habitat for Humanity’s AmeriCorps workers, and the members of the family to whom the house was dedicated. Freshman Garrett Bockman took particular interest in the Habitat project, staying extra hours on the Habitat site. One of Bockman’s life-long dreams is to build his own house and in his words, “climbing onto the roof and getting your hands dirty with spackle and a nail gun brings you to the heart of building a house.” Through volunteering with SMU Catholic, he was able to “meet several amazing people who showed me the real heart of the program.” Garrett praised the Saturday Service in that it allowed him to “see the people that you are helping” and “to learn skills that make your experience much more than worth it”. Garrett is just one example of how, according to campus minister Erin Duffy, Service Saturday gives students “an experience of service that is easy to get involved with and can lead to deeper knowledge about service and hopefully to more opportunities to serve.”
