FROM DIRECTOR our

As each of us grapple with what seems to be an ever-worsening economic situation, the mission

of the Church on America’s college campuses could never be clearer: offer abundant life and hope in uncertain times. For college students who are often insulated, at best, or oblivious, at worst, from the real pressures of life after college, the headlines have them asking big questions about their future. Now more than ever, we have an opportunity to orient our best and brightest young people toward a way of life that is rooted in God’s unconditional love and animated by their baptismal call to offer their lives in service to family and community.

Telling students about this way of life isn’t enough: we must live it. That’s why the community that gathers in the Neuhoff Catholic Student Community Center is so vital. Whether it is in a Spiritual Formation group, over Sunday Supper, or celebrating Mass in

the Chapel of the Annunciation, it is together that students catch a glimpse of the abundant life to which Jesus calls each of us. Here’s how one student describes what she has discovered:

“It is such a strong community of deep faith. The students are enthused and lit on fire for Christ. I feel such love and acceptance among my SMU Catholic friends. SMU Catholic has been such a guiding and loving presence in my life. I could not ask for anything more wonderful to be a part of my life during my college years in which my character and

person is being more fully developed.” Sophomore, Dance Major

But creating a home away from home for Catholic students is only the beginning. We must

send them forth into opportunities where they receive and become the hope of Christ in the world. Our Evangelization and Justice Education ministries give students ways to share their faith with others. In the fall of 2008, we introduced to the entire campus the first-ever Mustang Awakening, a three-day retreat led by students. More than 40 students participated

I have come that you might have lifeand have it more abundantly. - JOHN 10:10

in sharing their stories of faith and in growing in their awareness of God’s presence in their life. Our efforts in local neighborhoods, sharing time and life with refugees from around the world, give students first-hand experience in building relationships of mutual respect and learning. The annual Urban Plunge has resulted in an after-school initiative that sends more than 20 SMU students to tutor and mentor elementary school children in the Vickery Meadow neighborhood each week.

“I have grown in my ability to experience a relationship with God in diverse settings and experiences. In terms of my relationship with God, it’s also important to consider my ability to stand in solidarity with fellow men and women and helping those in need, and in that sense, I feel I have grown stronger in my ability to love God’s people.” Sophomore,

FROM DIRECTOR our Religious Studies & Foreign Languages Majors Ours is no small task. Our goal goes far beyond

“keeping our kids Catholic” while they go off to college. Our success is measured in students’ lives transformed by the truth of who they are in Christ. The result is men and women who graduate from SMU with their sights set on tackling the toughest issues facing society today – poverty, economic crisis, international conflict, threats to the dignity of each human person – and who find their strength in the Body of Christ and their guidance from the Holy Spirit.

This annual report is dedicated to those listed in our Donor Honor Roll who have made a financial investment in our ministry. You are asked to consider continuing that generosity by making a gift in 2009. Thank you.

BLESSINGS,

FRANK SANTONI, DIRECTORFROM CHAPLAIN our

Again we keep this solemn fast,a gift of faith from ages past,

this Lent which binds us lovingly,to faith and hope and charity.

- GREGORY THE GREATTranslated By Maurice F. Bell.

Again, the season of Lent is upon us. It is a time that affords us with a unique

opportunity to deepen our relationship with God by uniting ourselves more deeply into the mystery of Jesus’ journey in the desert. Lent prepares us for the greatest Christian feast ever – the resurrection of Christ from the dead, His triumph over death. Lent is a time when we, as Catholics, embrace the penitential practices of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. These three pillars of Lent open for us the door to journey with Christ.

Lent is a busy time for us in the Catholic Campus Ministry at SMU. Liturgically, we have added an additional Mass for the students on Sunday evenings; daily Mass Monday through Friday; Adoration of

the Blessed Sacrament each Wednesday. Students are actively sharing their faith with one another through Spiritual Formation Groups; passionately participating in areas

of Social Justice, and generously p e r f o r m i n g works of Charity; these name only a few of the many areas of their involvement.

On behalf of the students I wish thank you for your prayers, encouragement

and support of the students and the Catholic Campus Ministry at SMU; be assured of our prayers for you.

GOD BLESS,

FR. TONY LACKLAND, CHAPLAIN
