The goals of this session are to address 4 major financial aims as determined by SMSA:

1. Decreased funding over the last 4 years with uncertain future income

2. Sources of group funding for those interest groups with a departmental affiliation

3. Sources of conference funding for individuals not affiliated with an interest group

4. Creation of a CFC Endowment


SMSA Funding Breakdown 2007-2008

SMSA Endowment

• Created ~7-10 years ago by the then current SMSA administration

• Purpose of the endowment is both to– Support SMSA in future times of financial uncertainty or

crisis– Back large projects that are in keeping with the ethos of

SMSA and the general Stanford Medical student body

Problem 1: Decreased SMSA Funds Over Time and uncertain financial future

Decreased SMSA Funding Over Time--Proposed Solutions/Steps Taken:

1. Met with Jim Rollins & Brenda Lavell to discuss the possibility of creating student activities fees and implementing TECU system. Meeting to follow in upcoming weeks.

2. A written contract for the café/vending machines is currently in the works.

3. Arbor and Pacific Free Clinics were taken out of the annual funding process this year to lessen the overall group funding budget.

4. SMSA is implementing systems to help student groups find outside funding thereby lessening the overall group funding budget.


Problem 2: Group Funding

Many student groups continue to depend solely on SMSA funding despite the fact that they have departmental affiliations

Group Funding--Proposed Solutions/Steps Taken:

1. Meeting has been proposed for next September to help student groups to find additional departmental funding.

2. Currently considering matched funding incentives for groups able to find outside funding

3. Getting the administration involved in this project by encouraging departments to support their sister student groups


Problem 3: Options for Individual Funding

•SMSA maintains a budget of $3500 for students to present research at conferences

•This fund pays up to $200/student of the student’s travel expenses

•Each year, this fund is maxed out due to the popularity of the program

•Additionally, we do not currently have the capacity to fund students who would like to attend conferences at which they are not presenting research


Individual Funding--Proposed Solutions/Steps Taken:

SMSA would like to work with the administration to increase the support offered to medical students to attend conferences--either to present research or to learn more about a particular area of interest


Problem 4: Cardinal Free Clinics (CFC) requires future financial plans

CFC require massive funding to continue their role as functioning free clinics and institutions of the Stanford educational experience


CFC Endowment--Proposed Solution/Steps Taken:

1. SMSA unanimously voted to pledge $100,000 to the CFC endowment

2. SMSA representatives shared the pledge commitment and stipulations at the last CFC board meeting

3. Met with Jim Rollins to discuss endowment gift and its impact on SMSA funds

4. Met with Zera Murphy, Josh Thiel and Carol Kersten to solidify language of the endowment

Challenges Faced by Medical Students Interested in International Health


Proposal

1. Work with faculty to develop an International Health Application

1. Create a multidisciplinary course that prepares students to engage in international health research and service-learning• E.g. “The Science of Implementation: Global Health Delivery”

• Address resource management, advocacy, policy, CBPR methods• Partner with GSB, Law School, Design School, Education, etc.• Open to all graduate students and residents

2. Develop suggested timeline for coursework and IH activities• Yr 1 or 2: coursework (RIH, The Science of Implementation, ADEM lecture series)• Summer after Yr 1 or 2: field experience abroad with learning objectives to

establish foundation and background in area of interest• Yr 2+: additional coursework in areas of interest, TS proposal• Work with residency programs to identify opportunities for collaboration


2. Establish a funding process to support medical students and residents who want to engage in IH service-learning, immersion or clerkship programs

3. Develop a central IH resource for medical students that dovetails with the greater University IH Initiative (http://thestanfordchallenge.stanford.edu/get/layout/tsc/International)
