Skyscraper Lyric Anaylsis
Skies are crying, I am watching
Catching teardrops in my hands
Only silence, as it’s ending
Like we never had a chance
Do you have to make me feel
Like there’s nothing left of me
You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I’m made of glass
Like I’m made of paper
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper
As the smoke clears
I awaken and untangle you from me
Would it make you feel better
To watch me while I bleed
All my windows still are broken
But I’m standing on my feet
You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I’m made of glass
Like I’m made of paper
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper
Go run run run I’m gonna stay right here
Watch you disappear yeah
Go run run run yeah it’s a long way down
But I’m closer to the clouds up here
You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I’m made of glass Like I’m made of paper
Ohh...Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper Like a skyscraper, like a skyscraper
Like a skyscraper...
Skyscraper is an appropriate song to describe the feeling of someone who in a worse point, very sad and disappointed at the fate of love was experienced. Actually, the meaning of the song can be directly seen from the lyrics itself which appears transparent and easy to understand.
Lovato has used her music to help her though her personal struggles, while using this openness to connect to her audience and help them get through their own problems. Skyscraper was created and released as a comeback after her infamous meltdown and trip to rehab. The song shows the impact that music can have on people.
At the beginning of Skyscraper, the mood is sad and hopeless. Lovato’s voice shakes and she sounds like she is on the verge of tears. The volume is soft in order to increase the emotional impact of the beginning of the song. The lyrics at the beginning of the song are, “Skies are Crying, I am watching, Catching tear drops in my hands, only silence as it's ending like we never had a chance. Do you have to make me feel like there's nothing left of me?” This introduction to the song had a deeper meaning to Lovato. By painting an image with tears and crying, the singer is showing her pain through her lyrics. She struggled with an eating disorder, self- harming and self-medicating. Although she had been dealing with her insecurities all of her life, fame and society’s opinion put extreme pressure on her. The last line of the introduction is powerful and touches anyone dealing with any form of insecurity.
The mood of Skyscraper goes from sad to encouraging. The chorus of the song instills hope in the listener. “Go on and try to tear me down I will be rising from the ground like a skyscraper! Like a skyscraper!” Her voice gets louder and stronger as she sings the chorus. The words and the delivery of the lyrics symbolize overcoming obstacles. Whereas the beginning shows her at a low point, the chorus is saying that she will rise above all of her obstacles. The chorus has a strong emotional
connection to her audience because it is saying to the audience that they should not let negative attention, or bullying break them down. Instead they should use this to be stronger individuals.
At one part of the song Lovato says, “Would it make you feel better to watch me as I bleed?” This sentence has a literal meaning. She admitted that she has been self-harming by cutting herself for years. At the end of the song, Lovato’s voice gets much louder and she sounds like she is screaming at the audience. She sings, “ Go run, run, run, I'm gonna stay right here, Watch you disappear, yeah, Go run, run, run, Yeah it's a long way down, But I am closer to the clouds up here.” This part of the song is symbolic because Lovato is an advocate against bullying. She is saying that she is closer to heaven than the people that bully her and her fans, and she is saying that they are insignificant in her life and cannot bring her down.
In the music video Lovato looks like she is in pain, and it is up close and personal like the song. She appears all alone throughout the entire music video. She described the music video on Ryan Seacrest’s morning talk show, "There were so many things that represented my addictions and eating disorders and self-harm," she explained, "When I'm unraveling this black fabric...It was the toxicity took over my mind for so long, that oozed out of every pore that I had because I was suffering inside...I'm taking it off and walking on broken glass and powering through it.” She also explained that the significance of the read heart in a glass box is that the heart was protected by glass and can easily be broken. She said, “The shield is broken, but at the end of the video the heart is never broken. It had been protected for so long, but…even though its shield had been broken down, it’s still standing strong,” she said. “That’s kind of how I look at my problems and my issues. It’s like, yes my mask had been torn down and I was completely vulnerable.”
Skyscraper became an instant hit. The lyrics of the song resonated with many people because everyone has felt similar to the feelings she expresses in the song. Lovato has shown that music can have a profound impact on people and can help them get through obstacles in their life.
