The main image has been edited to show the bands lead singer smashing the magazines title which shows the rebellious side of ‘rock’ music. It also implies aggression and anger stereotyped with the rock genre.

The simplistic colours red and white have been used as a theme throughout the front cover which makes the titles and text stand out. Red also connotes anger which is associated with rock music.

The secondary image is outlined by a white border which draws the viewers attention to the image.

The bar code and price is clearly shown showing the practical side of the magazine.

The ‘200’ is written in bold and red which once again brings attention to the other article within the magazine.

‘THE BEATLES’ is such an iconic band, and known worldwide, so it has been written in a different colour so it shows the bands importance as it has been made more noticeable than the other supporting text.

The red lines in between the white text brake up each different article.

The writing at the top of magazine, which has been written in a black box to separate it from the main image, shows the magazines popularity.

Page 2: Music magazine anaylsis

The main image is superimposed over the magazines title which shows that it is a well known magazine, as consumers do not need to see the whole name to be able to recognize what it is.

The main image shows a medium long shot of the whole band, but the bands front man in front of his other band mates which implies that he is the most important and even the

most famous member.

‘Coldplay’ names the celebrities straight away and is written in bold and a bright colour which makes it stand out, and is the first thing that readers see drawing their attention to the magazines content.

The subtitles of each article within the magazine are written in bold and also in colour, which brings attention to the different articles.

Just like ‘Q’ magazine, blue lines have been used to differentiate the different articles.

Page 3: Music magazine anaylsis

The masthead has been placed on the top left hand side which is conventional within the music magazine industry.

The main image is a medium close up shot of the members of band who are looking straight into the

camera.

The text throughout the cover is written in red which connotes the theory's of anger and rebelling. Whereas white could represent the purity of the bands music.

Titles of the other stories within the magazine have been written in bold so the reader can clearly see them.

‘INSANE’ has been made to look as if it has been hand written, and it has also been placed at an angle which draws the readers attention towards the text as it is misplaced against the other

text.

Page 4: Music magazine anaylsis

The main image of a band covers most of the page which shows the reader that the article they’re featured in is the main story within this magazine.

The red, black and white colour scheme is a continuous theme throughout the magazine.

The contents information which is placed down the left hand side of the page, is divided into different sections which is made clearly visible as the titles of each section are written in bold white writing and placed upon a red background making the

white writing stand out.

In this issue there is a ‘Oasis special’ which is made obvious to the readers as it has been written in gold writing and the information is placed inside a gold bordered box. Gold connotes ideas of rich and importance, which this ‘Oasis special’ is within the music industry.

The issue number and month is clearly visible in the top right hand corner.

Within the white box is a quote from one of he band members. By placing the white box on top of the main image it brings the readers attention to what is written inside the box. As the white box is striking and eye-catching.

Although the contents page is very simplistic it provides the reader with just enough information about the magazine, without bombarding them with pointless information making them loose interest.

Page 5: Music magazine anaylsis

Kerrang’s contents page is very busy and full of pictures relating to the interest of the

reader.

Each category within the magazine is clearly presented within the contents page as the title has been written in a bold yellow font and placed upon a black background. This makes it stand out and look more important than the other text written below the title.

‘THIS WEEK’ has been written in inverted colours to the other category titles differentiating the titles importance.

A image of the front cover of the magazine has been included as well as a magazine review from an editor. This could have been included so the readers feel a more personal interaction with the magazines editor, creating a relationship between the editor and reader.

In each Kerrang contents page, at the bottom right hand corner of the page there is always a promotion for the readers to do with the magazine.

The larger image shows the reader the importance of this article as the image has been made larger than any other picture within the contents.

Page 6: Music magazine anaylsis

The title is written in a bold serif font making it stand out as it is very eye catching.

Like the ‘Kerrang’ contents page a variety of images representing people within the music industry have been used.

Also like the ‘Kerrang’ contents page an advertisement for the magazine has been placed in the bottom right hand side of the page.

The page numbers of the articles have been written using a bold black font making them clearly visible.

It seems to be a continuous theme throughout music magazines to use a larger image than any other to present the more important article within the magazine as this is the same with ‘Kerrang’, ’Q’ and

‘NME’ magazines .

Each sub article has a quote from a band member written in a different font to the description of the article. This adds a more personal touch to the magazine as readers feel they are getting first hand information from the band themselves rather than just information written by the magazine.

Page 7: Music magazine anaylsis

A picture of the band has been placed on the left hand page of the double page spread and covers an entire page. The Mise-en-scene in the picture shows the realism of the band as it has been deliberately shot in what looks like a stereotypical teenagers bedroom. Readers can tell this by the wall which has been covered by music posters. The band members are also sitting on the bed and the band member in the middle is also sitting very causally with his arm placed behind his head supporting the stereotype of teenagers being lazy

The large title of the band has been placed across both pages. The title also stands out as it is written using a bold font and placed upon a blue background which makes it the first thing

that the readers see when they open the page.

The right hand page of the double spread has been split into two separate parts; ‘The Teenagers’ article and the everyone’s talking about section. By placing the everyone’s talking about section on the same page as the teenagers article it shows the reader that they could be interested in the up coming talent, as it is the same genre as ‘The Teenagers’ which the readers are clearly interested in as they are reading the article.

The ‘Need To Know’ section gives readers a brief knowledge of the band. By placing the information in a blue box it makes it easier for the reader to see and also read as it is separated from any other text on the spread.

A quote from the band has been written in a white text and placed on a blue background, but has also been placed in the middle of the articles text. Both these elements help to draw the readers attention to

the quote.

Page 8: Music magazine anaylsis

The main image which is a long shot of the band members has been spread across both pages. The band members are also looking directly into the camera, establishing a relationship between themselves and the reader.

The main text which is a quote from the band nearly covers an entire page, drawing the readers attention to what the band have to say about their musical

career.

On top of the red banner which fades as it gets closer to the main image, is text which has been written in bold white writing making it stand out and also contrast with the colour of the band quote.

The text has been placed on top of the photograph of the band, so has been written in white so it can be easily read and also makes it stand out from the main image.

In the top left hand corner of the page the section of the magazine in which this article fits has been clearly displayed in large red letters, making it easy for the readers to realise what part of the magazine this particular article fits into.

Page 9: Music magazine anaylsis

A quote referring to Kurt Cobain’s home after his death has been placed inside the article text. It has also been written in a different colour to the main text which makes it stand out the to reader . The name of the person who said the quote has also been written in bold underneath the quote clearly showing the reader who the quote was said by.

A variety of images have been presented in a collage style, giving the reader a variety of images rather than ‘NME’s’ usual layout of one main image.

The title of the article is very large as it takes over a third of the left hand page of the spread, and has been made to look as it has been written on ripped paper. Also the name of the artist which the article is based upon ‘Kurt Cobain’ has been made to look as if it has been hand written, which makes the reader first be draw to the name rather than the actual title of the article.

The magazines logo and website address has been placed in the bottom right hand corner of the page to give the reader useful information.

Within the introduction of the article, key words have been written in a different colour to make them easily recognisable.

A further column for the text within the article has been placed on the right hand side of the spread, breaking up the text so readers don’t loose interest, but instead can take a look at pictures before continuing reading.
