GET SOME EXPERIENCE

This Activity Pack contains four activities to help you apply what you have learned in the ‘Get Some Experience’ module.

In Activity 1 you will consider careers you are interested in and the practical steps you can take to gain more experience or skills relevant to those careers.

In Activity 2 you will look at your goals. You will need information from this activity for Activity 3.

In Activity 3 you will learn how to complete an action plan.

In Activity 4 you will be provided a list of websites to learn more about work experience and volunteering.

REMEMBER THE KEY LEARNING POINTS FROM THIS MODULE:

1. Try things out. Trying things out helps you gauge your level of interest in the

topic (do you like it or not) and can be a good way of gaining new skills and

expertise.

2. Make it happen. Keep an open mind and have a positive attitude. Be active

when searching for new opportunities.

In Module 6, ‘Get Some Experience,’ Bryan and Lila illustrate the importance of planning your next steps when considering career options. Planning your next steps is a good way to be active! But, remember to be positive along the way.

ACTIVITY 2: GOALS*

Following the work, you have completed in the ‘You and Your Career’ course, you should be ready to set career goals. If you can recall from the module, the best way to set these goals is to start with a desired achievement and place the appropriate experience and skills around them.

Not everyone will have an idea of what their goal is. The important thing is to have something that you'd like to achieve in mind, so you are heading in a direction!

You may find that you have more than one goal; this is fine, so long as they don’t interfere with each other.

In the earlier activity packs, you will have completed activities to help you to know more about yourself and to know more about what is out there.

Now is your chance to make some decisions about your goal.

Remember, goals can be as specific as you would like. You can say ‘I want to be a wildlife photographer and work in the Galapagos filming penguins’ or you can say, ‘I want to take pictures for a living’. Either one is a goal and either one works, so long as you approach it the right way.

The template below is an action plan that has been created based on what has been covered in all the modules in this course. Now that you have finished the course, you will find that you have already completed several of the items on the action plan!

Each module’s activity pack has an activity that is starred like this: *. These starred activities, are pieces which fit in your action plan. Your action plan is a to-do list with infinite possibilities. It should help you achieve your goals by allowing you to plan and track the things you need to do to get there.

Update the action plan with dates and notes. This will help you plan when to complete each action and check if you have completed an item. There is a blank section at the bottom of the action plan where you can fill in additional activities that you want to do following this course. This can include conducting further research about your chosen career(s), talking to people or carrying out next steps actions from Activity 1, above. When completing additional activities, make sure you understand how they help you achieve your goal.

Remember, it’s important to follow up on your activities:

o Share your ‘next steps’ from Activity 1 with a professional in your network. Ask

them to help fill in any gaps you may have. For example, they may know good

places to research or know people who work in your desired career.

o Talk to an advisor or professional in your network about your goal(s) and ask

them for advice about how often you should revisit them.

o Once you have completed your action plan, set aside time every week to review

it and assess your progress. You may find that as you complete your initial

actions, there are new actions you add to your plan.

o If you find that you are hitting obstacles as you try to complete your actions,

make sure you talk to your advisor or find a professional in your network.

ACTIVIDAD 2: METAS*

Después del trabajo que hayas completado en el curso "Tu y tu carrera", debes estar listo para establecer metas profesionales. Si puedes recordar del módulo, la mejor manera de establecer estos objetivos es comenzar con un logro deseado y colocar la experiencia y las habilidades adecuadas a tu alrededor.

No todo el mundo tendrá una idea de cuál es su objetivo. Lo importante es tener en mente algo que te gustaría lograr, ¡Así que te diriges en una dirección!

Puedes encontrar que tienes más de un objetivo; esto está bien, siempre y cuando no interfieran entre sí.

En los paquetes de actividades anteriores, habrás completado actividades que te ayudarán a saber más sobre ti mismo y a saber más sobre lo que hay disponible.

Ahora es tu oportunidad de tomar algunas decisiones sobre tu objetivo.

Recuerda, las metas pueden ser tan específicas como deseas. Puedes decir "Quiero ser fotógrafo de vida silvestre y trabajar en las Islas Galápagos filmando pingüinos" o puedes decir "Quiero sacar fotos para ganarme la vida". Cualquiera de los dos es un objetivo y cualquiera de los dos funciona, siempre que lo abordes de la manera correcta.
