FAST growing budget hotelchain, Travelodge, has becomethe latest company to protectits staff using the award-win-ning Identicom security badge, developed by Dinnington-based connexion2.

Travelodge is issuing staffin more than 500 hotels with

are occasions when staffmembers, working alone onreception, behind the bar ordealing with a customer’squery - perhaps in theirroom, feel they need addi-tional support.

ThE Federation of SmallBusinesses is calling on theGovernment to championnon-bank finance to helpsmall firms.

The FSB contrasts theexperience of the UK, wheresuccessful loan applicationsfrom small businesses fell by24 per cent between 2007 and2010, with Germany, wherethe fall was just nine per centand the US, where the FSBsays government-backedloans for small businessesform an important part of theUS economic recovery plan.

It wants the UK Govern-ment to encourage alterna-tive forms of finance, such aspeer-to-peer lending models, and to learn the lessons fromcountries like Germany and

the US, where it says routesto finance are varied, local,longer-term and reliable.

Federation of Small Busi-nesses regional chairman andSheffield businessman GordonMillward said: “It is only whenyou compare bank lendingin the UK to the situation incountries like Germany andthe US that you can see theextent to which our bankingsystem fails to deliver whatsmall businesses need.

“Too much time has beenspent tinkering with theexisting system when itis perfectly clear that weneed to develop alternativeroutes to finance. We needto accept that in its currentform, our banking structuremight never fully cater to

the needs of the UK’s busi-ness community. We need tobuild alternative routes thatconnect savers and investorswith viable small businesseseager to grow, and therebyintroduce innovation andcompetition to the sector.

“We challenge the Gov-ernment to look for short-term wins, such as helpingexisting peer-to-peer lendersscale up their operations, aswell as thinking strategicallyabout the longer term and thekind of financial infrastruc-ture we need to underpin oureconomy and support smallfirms to grow.”

The FSB and the NewEconomics Foundation havejoined forces to produce areport on access to finance

for small firms, called ‘Alt+Finance.’

Tony Greenham, head offinance and business at theNew Economics Foundation, said: “our one-size-fits-allbanking system is dominatedby a handful of large london-based national and interna-tional banks. Their global vi-sion leads inevitably to manylocal blind-spots, and the UKhas consistently underper-formed our major industrialcompetitors when it comes tosupporting SME finance andregional growth.

“We need a richer diver-sity of financial institutionsand funding sources to suitthe needs of our innovativeand entrepreneurial smallercompanies.”

ForMer detective sergeantMick Dransfield has launched aspecialist crime prevention busi-ness in Barnsley.

Mr Dransfield spent 19 years inSouth yorkshire Police’s CID de-partment before setting up Dran-tec, which also capitalises on theexperience he built up as an elec-trician at Grimethorpe Colliery, before joining the police.

Drantec supplies CCTV sur-veillance, burglar alarm and LeDlighting systems to clients thatinclude Barnsley and BurtonAlbion football clubs, Doncasterracecourse and Doncaster robinhood Airport, as well as factories, haulage companies and freightdistributors.

“Throughout the years in thepolice I kept up with the regula-

tions for electrical work, and ithas paid off,” says Mick.

Most of the CCTV camerasDrantec installs are visible to thepublic, but the company is alsoinvolved in fitting covert cameras- and that is where Mick’s policeexperience is vital.

“There are very strict rulesabout when you can use covertcameras.

“you can’t just use them to spyon people without good reasonand you can’t put them in certainsensitive places.

“It is also important that cam-eras, particularly those thatmight lead to evidence to be usedin court, are in a position, and of

a quality, that gives clear picturesthat identify people.I lost count ofthe hours I spent as a police offic-er studying grainy CCTV footageof the top of someone’s head!”

Drantec has already been in-volved in a number of sensitivecovert operations, includingcatching a member of staff at agarage fiddling MoT results andfitting cameras to a safe house forvictims of people trafficking.

Mick says that none of thismight have happened if it hadn’tbeen for the backing he has hadfrom the Genesis programme.

The programme, run by enter-prising Barnsley, provides himwith a rent-free office at BarnsleyBusiness and Innovation Centreat Wilthorpe, and business men-toring and advice.

Showcasing artistic talents

Date: 26/02/2012. Story submitted by: SuzanneRutter

An empty shop window in Sheffield city centre has been transformed by artistic Doncaster College students as part of the Sheffield Showcase project. The window display on Cambridge Street now includes work by 10 first and second year students and recent graduates. Joseph Dyer, fine art lecturer, along with photography course leader, Evan Wood, and art lecturer, David Halewood, put the exhibition together. Joseph said: "The exhibition was set up to show the quality of what we do on the two courses and hopefully broaden our catchment area."The window is one of several in Sheffield city centre being used to showcase creative talent and business since shops closed due to the recession.”The Sheffield Showcase is a project run by The Source in conjunction with Sheffield City Council. The project creates an outdoor gallery in the city centre, creating a better environment for customers visiting businesses still operating in the area, as well as providing opportunities for local businesses and creative individuals to contribute to the improvement of the city by showcasing their wares within the window spaces.Sheffield Councillor, Ian Auckland, Cabinet Member for Business, Transport and Skills said: "The project has already seen hundreds of artists, retailers and exhibitors showcase their wares and has definitely brightened up the city centre rather than simply having boarded up windows."

View B: Looking down the covered street in the heart of Sevenstone to the new John Lewis building. Block 6 (to the right) is designed by BDP; block 5 (to the left) is designed by Foreign Office Architects and block 7 (the John Lewis building) is designed by O Donnell + Tuomey. Gillespies is responsible for all public realm design.

The £600m question

Published on Thursday 12 January 2012 11:03It’s been so long, I’ve forgotten what Sevenstone is.A £600m development between Barkers Pool, Pinstone Street and Moorhead. It is designed primarily to offer a wide range of new shops, but the development will also include some apartments and leisure attractions. There’s a multi-storey car park off Rockingham Street and there could be a hotel to replace the old Grosvenor House.Hasn’t the city centre got enough shops?According to retail analysts, Sheffield city centre has not got as many shops of the appropriate quality or size compared with other cities and places. In the early 70s, Sheffield was ranked eighth in the UK in terms of the quantity and quality of its shops and the turnover. Now it has dropped to 38th. The opening of Meadowhall and a drop in spending – linked to the collapse of heavy industry – took their toll. Large, modern, efficient units are needed to encourage retailers to invest in Sheffield.

Why Sevenstone? To reflect that Sheffield is built on seven hills. London-based developers Hammerson won a European-wide competition in 2001 to design and implement the project (British Land, who co-own Meadowhall, were also on the shortlist). Hammerson came up with the name.Aren’t shopping centres past their sell-by date?It wouldn’t be a single covered shopping complex, similar to those that were fashionable in the Seventies, but a series of buildings with precincts and landscaping in between. The development agreement says the public spaces have to be of a similar standard to the Peace Gardens, Barkers Pool and Sheaf Square in front of the railway station. So which shops would move into the retail quarter? It’s far too early for contracts to be signed, but it would be no surprise if the likes of Mango, Zara, DKNY and Reiss were to come to Sheffield, along with the possible relocation of other stores. However, it was always intended that the anchor store would be John Lewis. What is John Lewis doing? Its original plan was to build a new store on the site of the former Wellington Street fire station, but the company is now keeping open the option of redeveloping the current store, which would be cheaper. No final decision has been taken. Retail quarter plans date from the late 1990s. It should have been opened by now.Everything was going well. Much of the preliminary work, such as relocating utilities such as power cables, gas mains, water pipes along with the fire station to pave the way for construction, was completed. The planning and land acquisition process were progressing well – and then came the recession.
