The Emporis Standards Committee defines a skyscraper as a multi-story building whose architectural height is at least or 330 ft

A high-rise building is defined as a multi-story structure between 12–39 floors.

Skyscrapers were able to climb in height due to the following building systems: Steel structure Elevators Air Conditioning

Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) sets the standards by which buildings are measured.

The council listed and ranked buildings in three categories:

height of structural or architectural top; height of highest floor; height to top of any part of the building.
