Vray SU Displacement Part 1: Displacment Map Here is a simple gray scale map (1inch by inch) I did in Photoshop. I divided it into ten increments gray scale. The white one is H,S,B =0,0,100 then I used 10 increments for the B (0,0,90; 0,0,80; up to the black which H,S,B = 0,0,0. I then applied it with a model in SU For a multiplier of 1, color white (value of H=0, S=0, and B= 100) the displacement will be exactly 1 inch. You will see in this render, that the white color has been displaced exactly 1 inch (exact level as the red plane height)

I then applied it with a model in SU

For a multiplier of 1, color white (value of H=0, S=0, and B= 100) the displacement will be exactly 1 inch. You will see in this render, that the white color has been displaced exactly 1 inch (exact level as the red plane height)

Therefore, if you want to create and use Vray SU displacement accurately, you need to consider the following with your gray scale map: H,S,B (0,0,100) which is white will displace 1 inch from its original position. H,S,B (0,0,0) which is white will not have any displacement. PART 2 Displacement with Vray. From 1.48.66 there was a slight change with Vray SU. In this tutorial I am using the latest Beta Tester version: 1.48.95 In this 2nd part, I will use Erick’s carpet material.

SketchUp Setup

Here is the quick render of the above setup- no displacement.

Page 4: Displacement using sketch up

How to create displacement in Vray Here I selected the carpet material and clicked displacement. Click the small “m” on the displacement map and another box will open.

Once the small “m” has been clicked, another window will appear. Under the map type, you must select TexBitmap. Load the displacement map you have. (bitmap buffer.. File)

This is the render using the default setting. The grass seems ok, but the carpet has no displacement effect. I purposely did it to explain about GROUP. The carpet here was not grouped.

On this second render, I selected the carpet and made a Group. You see, weather in the old or new Vray SU, there will be no displacement, until you make the whole thing to be displaced as group in SketchUp. Next image shows the displacement effect in the carpet as well.

Page 6: Displacement using sketch up

Now I exploded the carpet model again and deselected some faces. I then created a group with the selected faces.

Page 7: Displacement using sketch up

In this render we can see that displacement only occurred with group faces. Faces that were not included into the group were not displaced at all, even though the same material was applied to them.

Also another thing that must remember is displacement occurs exactly perpendicular to any face.

Global Displacement. In the Vray Option rollout, there is a displacement parameter. This parameter affects all displacement applied in the overall scene.

Page 9: Displacement using sketch up

I increased the amount from 1 to 5 and in this render. We can notice that both grass and carpet material has been displaced.

Individual Material Displacement Now I returned with the default amount of 1 and only adjusted the material displacement multiplier.

Page 10: Displacement using sketch up

In this render, we can see that displacement adjustment occurred in the grass material and not with the carpet material. Therefore, if you want to adjust the displacement of each material, you will only adjust each individual material multiplier.

I hope you find this explanation helpful. Nomeradona
