About the Project :-

The VUP structure is a part of highway project which is executed on Built, Operate & Transfer (BOT) (Toll) on Design, Built, Finance, Operate & Transfer (DBFOT) pattern under National Highways Development Programme (NHDP) Phase-V. NHDP Phase-V project is a prestigious project & is a part of golden quadrilateral connecting Mumbai to Bangalore. The project is awarded to Concessionaire (Contractor) M/s. PSTRPL (Subsidiary company of M/s. Reliance Infrastructure Ltd) for a period of 24 years i.e. up to 30th Sept 2034. The Concession Agreement for the said project was signed between National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) & M/s PSTRPL on 10th March 2010. The appointed date is 1st October, 2010 and construction period is 30 months. M/s. Aarvee Associates, Architects Engineers & Consultants Pvt. Ltd. has appointed as Independent Engineer (IE) (Consultant) and M/s. HAKS, Chennai has appointed as safety consultant for the project. The six laning widening project starts from Satara (Ch. 725.000) and ends at Dehuroad (Ch. 865.350), total length of the project is 140.350 Kms. Estimated Project Cost is Rs. 1724.55 Crores.

This project is a Access Controlled Highway Project and in the entire construction period, the highway is to be maintained by the Concessionaire at his cost from the appointed date. Traffic Management and Safety of workers and the road users shall be ensured at all times in accordance with the relevant Indian Road Congress (IRC)/IS Codes as stipulated in the Concession Agreement. Concessionaire has to provide Road side furniture, Street Lighting, Pedestrian Facilities, Landscaping & Tree Plantation, Highway Patrol – Ambulance & Tow Crane etc.

1. Pawana River Bridge ( Major strcture) at Ch. 860.350 :- The silent features along with progress of work observed during the site visit are as below:

i. River Pawana: River Pawana is a perennial river. Continuous flow of water is coming from the upstream end i.e. through Pawana dam. There are number of K.T. Weirs constructed on the down stream side, due to which it was observed 6-7 m water depth maintained continuously. So construction of bridge in water is a challenging task. For accessing the site & for equipment movement the Concessionaire had constructed earthen embankment platforms, for which huge quantity of earth filling was required. Concessionaire M/s PSTRPL has adopted well foundation for the piers. There are two piers on both the bridges (LHS/RHS).

ii. Existing Bridges: It was observed during site visit that two bridges, one on LHS – 2 laned (PSC T girder – work completed in 1970) & RHS- 3 laned (PSC Box girder- work completed in 2000) were already exiting.

iii. New Bridges: The new bridges (two nos.) are proposed on the service road on LHS & RHS side. Both are 3 laned each & for that PSC-T girder will be used (four girders with 3.125 m c/c spacing). Span arrangement for the bridge is – 3 spans of 30.52 m each.

iv. Pile foundation: pile foundation was observed to be used for abutment foundation work. Total 15 nos. piles (5x3 rows) were used. Av. depth for pile is 13.5 m upto cut off level. Permanent liner of 6 mm thk. was used for each pile. Size of each circular pile is 1.0 m dia. and main reinforcement used is 25 mm dia. and circular helical r/f of size 8 mm dia. was used as a distribution steel. Over the group of piles, pile cap of 1.50m thickness & size 5.3 m x 6.3m is used. On the pile cap, there is a pier of size 1.7 m dia., which is yet to be constructed.

v. Well& Pier : A circular type well of dia. 7.00m & thickness 0.80 m was used. It is observed that,A. For RHS Bidge, the work of two wells, 5m above river bed level is completed.

Pier cap & pier is yet to be casted.B. For LHS bridge, two wells above high flood level is completed. Pier cap is

already completed. Piers upto 5m ht. is also completed. C. Main r/f used is 32 mm of dia. & for dist. is 10 mm dia. Concrete for well & pier

as per design is M-35. Pier size is 1.7 m dia.vi. Girders for New Bridges: Size of the girder is 1.8 m x 0.75m each. Total clear

Length of each girder is 30.52 m. Size of one girder is 1.8m x 0.75m. There are 4 girders to be used for each span with 3.125 m c/c spacing. PSC-T type girders are proposed by the Concessionaire for the work. Girders were observed to be casted, tensioned & ready for launching.

vii. Deck Slab: Thickness of slab is 200 mm & concrete type is M-40. The slab was not yet casted on the site.

2. Vehicular Underpass (VUP) at Ch. 861.040 :- The silent feature of the vehicular underpass is as below.

i. The Vehicular underpass site is located on the Westerly Diversion to Pune city road. The structure is located at Ch.861.040 to facilitate the local road users / public for crossing cross road of Kiwale- Ravet. There is high rapid development on both sides of the National Highway was observed. This vehicular underpass is located at Ch. 861.040 (Near Ravet) to facilitate crossing of the local road users /

public travelling towards Ravet to Kiwale. To facilitate easy crossing movement, NHAI has proposed an underpass of size 30m span at the junction.

ii. The span arrangement of the structure is 1 x 30 m. Clear height of the structure is 5.00 m.

iii. There are Left Hand Side (LHS) and Right Hand Side (RHS) main carriageway of width 11.05 m with a central median of 1.2 m.

iv. There are six RCC pre-stressed girders of I section type with a depth of 1.45 m, length of 31.5 m and center to center spacing between two is 2.20 m.
