“Environmental education isan excellent and practical wayto teach critical thinking andproblem solving,” says KathyMcGlauflin, Director of ProjectLearning Tree (PLT), an envi-ronmental education program.“It helps young people apply

science and math skills inmeaningful ways, and intro-duces them to careers in thegrowing green jobs industry.”More importantly, she said,giving kids the knowledge theyneed to protect the environ-ment will have a positiveimpact on the world fordecades to come.

McGlauflin says that a goodplace to start is to get kids toconsider energy use.Encourage kids to investigatehow much energy their familyand school uses, the mainsources of that energy andways to implement energy-sav-ing strategies. Set a goal andget kids to calculate the savingsfrom one month’s utility bill tothe next, or over a period oftime.

Here are some ideas to getstarted:

� Work together to switchold lighting with newer energyefficient bulbs. Ask kids to do alittle arithmetic to determinehow much longer your new

fluorescent or CFL bulbs willlast. Take advantage of naturallighting whenever possible.

� Spend a day in the yardplanting trees that providestrategic shade. Doing so canhelp reduce your energy con-sumption.

� Dress for the weather, soyou can adjust your heating orair conditioning thermostat forreduced energy use.

� Encourage kids to turn offtheir electronics and get out-side.

� Turn off lights and appli-ances, such as computers when

they’re not in use.� Wash only full loads, and

open the door of your dish-washer after the final rinsecycle to allow air drying.

� If possible, walk or bike toschool.
