DATZ IT!

I know that Kathleen Parienti and her team of co-conspirators are excitedly looking forward to the Autumn Artisans Fair they are planning as a new Temple fundraiser scheduled Sunday, September 22. I’m not quite sure how it’s going to work – breakfast and lunch will be available, an Upscale Market Boutique will also be happening – but I’m imagining a lot of local area artisans sitting in booths partitioned off for that purpose and marketing their special crafts. I further imagine – I may be incorrect, but go with me on this – that as shoppers find their treasures they will total up and pay a final bill before departing. Here’s why I like that imagery. The Artisans Fair is the day after our Saturday night Selichot service and exactly one week before Rosh Hashanah and the start of the High Holy Days. It is during this period that we Jews are meant to be putting together a Cheshbon Nefesh. In modern Israel, when one asks the waiter for the bill or pays the monthly utility bill, one asks for and pays the cheshbon. It lists what we have ordered and the price, or how much energy we have consumed and the cost. Similarly, a Cheshbon Nefesh is usually translated as “an accounting of the soul.” It’s a kind of moral reckoning or the taking of a moral inventory. Imagine our lives as a kind of artisans fair – a collection of booths (a kindness booth, a helping-others booth, a family responsibilities booth, a caring-for-the-sick booth, a Torah study booth, a tzedakkah booth). This is the time of year when we are meant to check in at each booth and do a personal evaluation with the hope of improving our inventory and our product quality at each. The High Holy Days are a period for personal resolve to enhance those booths. So perhaps when we talk about the Days of Awe as a time for cheshbon nefesh, we can expand a bit from the notion of “an accounting of the soul” – and ask, “What does my life add up to right now?” In what ways have I made the world better? In what ways have I made it worse? How do I affect the lives of others? Are their lives easier or harder because of my behavior? The questions take us out of the realm of self. We ask not “who or what has been good for me?” but “for whom or what have I been good?” Cheshbon hanefesh is not for beating ourselves up. Jewish tradition ascribes to each human being an infinite, unmeasurable worth. But Cheshbon hanefesh is the essential prelude to meaningful change. If we approach the process humbly and sincerely, it can provide us with a map for more worthy living. Shanah tovah, Rabbi Michael Datz

Dear Fellow Congregants, I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to our newest members Livia and Gavriel Savit-Woods, and their adorable baby daughter, Lily. If you haven’t heard – The Temple is having its first major fund raising event of the year, the first Annual Autumn Artisans Fair on Sunday, September 22, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Our memorial hall will be filled to capac-ity with 25 local and out of town artists selling their creations. Join us to volunteer, buy and nosh! Contact Kathleen Parienti at [email protected] to donate baked goods or items for the Temple’s Upscale Market Boutique. The Union of Reform Judaism (URJ) Biennial will be held in Chicago December 11 – 15, 2019. Read more about Biennial activities and register at https://urj.org/urj-biennial. As a URJ member, Temple B’rith Sholom is entitled to five delegates. We have three signed up already and welcome and encourage more – it’s in Chicago – if you can’t be a delegate, come as a guest for Shabbat! I want to express both my own appreciation and the appreciation of the board to Sharon Star who is rotating off the Springfield Board of Jewish Education (SBJE) board where she served as their Treasurer. We remain grateful to have Sharon serve as the Temple’s Webmaster – do visit our website soon, www.templebrithsholom.net – it is continually being updated. I am equally pleased to welcome Robert Rabin who has agreed to join the SBJE Board as our Temple representative along with Joni Abramowitz. Robert attended his first SBJE board meeting this past month. Thank you Robert for your willingness to serve in this capacity. Many thanks go to Bob Roth and committee Bob Silverman and Michael Trieger who will coordinate High Holiday Honors this year. Our annual Century Club event is scheduled for October 27, 2019. Save the Date – “WHODUNIT” is this year’s theme with location to be announced soon! A special thank you to Erin and Josh Stern for Co-Chairing this year’s event. This is a significant fundraiser for Temple B’rith Sholom so please put this date on your calendar today. From the Archives: The Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC), now known as the Union of Reform Judaism (URJ), was formed by Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise on July 8, 1873. Representatives from 34 congregations met in Melodeon Hall, Cincinnati, Ohio, and formed the Union. The name reflected Rabbi Wise’s hope to unite all Jews under a single roof. Wise founded Hebrew Union College in 1875 – Rabbi Datz’s Alma Mater. Temple B’rith Sholom af-filiated with UAHC on January 14, 1877. Looking forward to our 1st Annual Artisans Fair with “The Holidays” following close behind. Shanah Tovah Alan Cherrick, President

The Fair is Coming!

Temple B’Rith Sholom will be bursting at the seams on September 22 as we host our 1st Annual Artisans Fair! We have 25 local and area-wide vendors ready to entice you to buy their creations. Everything from Quillers to jewelry to candles to a wonderful array of artwork.

Please plan on strolling through the Memorial Hall from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday, September 22, to find special treasures you must have!

There will be breakfast—hot, fresh cinnamon rolls and beverages – followed by luncheon sandwiches, both available for purchase to keep up your strength.

Additionally, if you would like to volunteer on the day of the Fair, please contact the Temple at 525-1360, ext. 1, or Kathleen Parienti at 652-1945 , or if you’re willing to bake for the Bake Sale Booth, please call Marlene Schultz at 622-4036.

We remain in need of your new or gently used treasures such as crystal, fine jewelry or artwork for our Upscale Market Boutique. You may bring your items to the Temple or contact Kathy Holley at 546-5783 or Terri Benson at 546-7560.

In addition there will be a raffle of the Artisans’ goods, the Judaica Shop will be open, and rounding out this excitement will be historical tours throughout the day of our iconic 100+ years old Sanctuary.

Please come, eat, enjoy and shop! It’s all here for the taking. We hope to see everyone at Temple on the 22nd. Kathleen Parienti Chair

Temple Security Update

As previously reported in the July/August newsletter, the Board, in response to a vote at the 2019 annual meeting, approved armed security for all Shabbat and High Holiday services as well as highly visible events. The 2019/2020 invoices for security will soon be mailed in the amount of $100.00, which may be paid monthly, quarterly or in total. Please note that September dues invoices shall also be mailed soon to those paying quarterly. Writing separate checks for dues and security would be helpful for bookkeeping purposes. If you choose to write one check for both please remember to identify how much is being paid for security in the memo portion of the check. Your assistance with this matter is greatly appreciated. Moreover, your support in protecting our members in these turbulent times is imperative. Alan Cherrick, President Kathleen Parienti, Treasurer

B’rit Yisrael School News I hope everyone had a great summer. It always goes too fast! Around August 7th I sent registration materials to parents through email with a calendar. If you did not receive that please check your spam file. If you need me to resend the materials, please let me know at [email protected]. Our Kickoff is set for September 8th at Temple Israel at 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Our theme for the year will be Israel, so our opening activities will center around taking a trip there. It should be fun.

We have a special relay we are going to run, so please have your children dress in shorts or pants. We will have a parent meeting while the students are doing that. Parents are welcome to stay, especially since we will hold a fire drill and an evacuation drill. I will send out a schedule for the first day’s events. The Springfield Board of Jewish Education has voted to provide off-duty police to help secure us on Sundays. We will enter through the parking lot door only. Our kick-off will include an evacuation drill and fire drill.

We are going to offer three Hebrew classes; 1st/2nd grade (Bet) Hebrew- Livya and Ruby Phillip-Levin; a 4th grade Hebrew class (Dalet) – Rabbi Marks; and a Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation class (Vav)- Sharon Snyder We are going to try and find a mid-week time slot for an extra 45-minute Hebrew class for the 4th graders only. So parents of these students, please be thinking of a time we can meet. We will have three Religious school classes: K-2 taught by Sharon Star; 3rd/4th grade class taught by Chuck Faingold; and a Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation class taught by Rabbis Datz and Marks. The Springfield Board of Jewish Education agreed to continue classes at Temple Israel for the time being. Tuition will be the same as last year. Contact information for me is [email protected] Please add that address to your inbox. My mobile is 217 414 9727. As a courtesy to the teacher and the other learners, please strive to be on time for Hebrew and Religious School classes throughout the year. Please let your teacher or me know when your child is going to be absent so we can update you on any missed material We are all looking forward to the upcoming school year! Lisa GoldbergBelle
