Michael Mengers, Community Events Manager at the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce. “Even though the Tours were scheduled to end in August, we continu-ally get phone calls and visitors asking if they could be extended through September. We are doing our best to keep up with the demand.”

To date, over 70 people have taken the historic tour this summer which began being offered on June 16th. Attendees have come from as far as Israel, Canada and Wisconsin. Mengers believes about 50% of tour-takers are Dover residents interested in learning more about the history located right in their backyard.

This summer is the third year that the Chamber of Commerce has offered the tours and the program is staffed entirely by volunteers. Dover residents and history buffs, Doug DeDe, Anthony McManus, Larrie Upton and

Ollie LeChance have acted as guides this season. The cost of the Guided Tour is $5 per person and $15 for families of three or more. Comfortable shoes, water bottles and reservations are strongly recommended. To make a res-ervation for an upcoming tour, please contact the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce by calling (603) 742-2218.

Make food prep easy by going rawFollow a few quick and easy tips to serve and enjoy the the freshest of fruits and

veggies grown at your local farms. Serve these foods raw, because cooked vegetables can lose many nutrients throughout the cooking process. Choose to go raw for your first bite, and try these ideas.

Simple dipping delights - A plate of crudites, also known as raw vegetables cut into bite-sized strips, served with a favorite dressing or delicious dip, makes for a great afternoon refreshment or pre-dinner appetizer. Add unexpected treats like shoestring-cut sweet potatoes, sugar snap peas or green beans served fresh.

Pretty, delicious and raw - Turn garden delights into pieces of art. Thinly slice a sweet potato into long, narrow strips. Wrap the strips in a circle, pinning on one side with a toothpick, and flaring out on the other to create a flower appearance.

Sassy salsa - Chips and salsa or guacamole - the reason many restaurants serve these prior to the meal is because they are delicious and easy to prepare ahead of time. Make pico de gallo using tomatoes, onions, jalapenos and cilantro. Or, change it up by smashing avocados and substituting them for the tomatoes.

Crispy salads - There is nothing better than a crisp lettuce salad full of fresh vegetables and decorated with nuts and fruits. If growing leaf lettuce, do not cut until you are ready for use. Head lettuce can be chilled in the refrigerator for a day or two. Cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, radishes and asparagus add delightful flavors to the lettuce. Mix in cheese like feta, blue cheese, parmesan or goat cheese, and add nuts, croutons or even tortilla strips for some added crunch. Do not be afraid to add those fresh summer fruits as well. A handful of blueberries, sliced strawberries, diced apples or delicious grapes on top, and you have got a well-balanced meal mostly grown right in your own garden.

The Herbalist in the Field: Autumn Barks and Berries Workshop

9/29/2012 (10:00AM) CANTERBURY - This in-the-field series will devote an hour to each plant, includ-

ing time spent identifying, harvesting, and processing it into remedies or food. This unique opportunity to get to know common, useful medicinal plants takes advantage of the scenic gardens, fields, woodlands, and garden barn of the historic Canterbury Shaker Village. As the season shifts to autumn, most flowers and leaves have long past their peak, and the medicinal energies now reside in berries and the bark of shrubs and trees. You will venture to the forests of the Village to seek out wild cherry, black birch, and elderberry to make tea, cough syrup, and oxymel. (If elderberry is not available to harvest, we’ll work with rosehips.) Canterbury Shaker Village, 288 Shaker Road, Canterbury, NH. Phone: 603-783-9077

sLowlife, a unique exhibi-tion at the Montshire

We know intellectually that plants are alive, but experiencing it directly is mostly in the realm of gardeners - it takes time.

Many of us think of and treat plants as inanimate objects. However, a plant grows, reacts to changes in its environment, reproduces, responds to disease and injury, and undergoes a slow decline into old age and death – a saga that sounds hauntingly familiar. Con-trary to our conscious perception, plants do move…be it ever so slowly.

Through vivid time-lapse photography and movies, sLowlife accelerates the time-scale of plants into our own frame of reference, speeding up their everyday lives to a pace that resonates with our own. “We take great pride in the living landscape of our 100-acre museum here at the Montshire,” states Bob Raiselis, Exhibits Director at the Montshire, “and this new exhibition will help visitors to understand just how alive that landscape is.” Raiselis continues, “By turning time on its head, the creators of sLowlife have given us a whole new way to look at plants, their

activities, their movement, and their lives.”sLowlife is an exciting exhibition that uses

science, art, and technology to provide alternative dimensions for experiencing plants. It presents unusual and sometimes unnerving perspectives on how a plant reacts, both short-term and long-term, to its inner and outer worlds. Using scientific data from the plant studies on which the exhibition was based,

nationally known composer John Gibson, Indiana University, created a fascinating musical score to accompany the exhibition.

Slowlife exhibition will be at the Montshire Mu-seum of Science in Norwich, Vermont from Saturday, September 15–Sunday, November 25, 2012.

Call For Entries! 16th Annual Scarecrow Contest at Settlers’ Green

NORTH CONWAY, NH: Settlers’ Green Outlet Village in North Conway, NH is calling for scarecrow entries from schools, non-profit organizations, gardeners, businesses and individual to compete in the 16th Annual Scarecrow Contest. Winners will be announced during the shopping center’s annual Fall Festival on Saturday, September 29, 2012.

Now in its 16th year, the Scarecrow Contest and Fall Festival is one of the shopping center’s premier events. Dozens of scarecrows from the simple to the bizarre are on display for the festival and all through foliage season. The contest is open to everyone and there is no entry fee. Cash and ribbon awards are presented in several categories and groups: The Traditional Scarecrow, Scarecrow Family & Friends, and The Whimsical Scarecrow. Teens, Children, Non-Profits and Individuals all have a chance to win in any category. The Grand Prize of $1,000 will be presented as a Judges Award to the scarecrow that receives the greatest number of points from the judges! And, a cash award of $500 for first place will be presented in each category. This is a great opportunity for clubs, businesses, social groups, schools and daycares to have fun creating a representative scarecrow AND win some money for their organization!

All scarecrows must be handmade by the person(s) entering the contest and must be standing up and at least life sized – larger than life is ok too! All scarecrows will be on dis-play for three weeks and must be weather resistant. It is very important that scarecrows be affixed to a post no larger than a “two by four,” approximately 6 feet tall, and ready for display. Settlers’ Green Outlet Village will provide free posts for anyone in need and for ideas and photos of previous year’s scarecrow winners go to settlersgreen.com. The web site also has the entry form and rules, or you can stop by the management offices for a copy or call us at 356-7031 and we will send you one.

Scarecrow entries must be brought to Settlers’ Green no later than 4 pm, Friday, September 28th. Scarecrows will be placed around the shopping center in areas where they receive at least partial coverage from the weather, but all scarecrows should be ready for whatever mother nature provides! The Fall Festival on September 29 will not only feature the scarecrows, but also free music, a pumpkin pie contest, pumpkin painting
