On the Cover:Fun in the California sun was had by all attending the 2009 National Holstein Convention in Sacramento, California. Even though the temperature soared over 100 daily, we did not experience the Midwest humidity, so the high temperatures were tolerable! A strong contingent of Holstein enthusiasts traveled from Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Unfortunately no delegates from Arkansas or Texas were able to make the meetings.

Missouri State Fair Dairy Shows Dedicated to the Wilson Family
The 2009 Missouri State Fair Dairy Shows were dedicated to the Mike & Tina Wilson family of Neosho, MO. The Wilson have been faithful exhibitors at the Missouri State Fair. Their farm display is always a treat for other ex-hibitors and fair attendees. Their display and attention to detail has garnered four herdsman awards. They have also exhibited quality cattle. In 2008, Kim gained Supreme Champion honors of the 4-H/FFA Show with her Guernsey, Mil-Wil Tiller Malibu. In both 2002 and 2005, Shannon showed the Grand Champion FFA Jersey. Also in 2004, Kim exhibited the Grand Champion FFA Holstein. The Wilson family has been successful in the Junior Dairy Judging Contest held at the Fair. Kim and Scott have taken top honors in the contest. In addition to Mike and Tina and their chil-dren, Shannon, Kim and Scott, friends Rich Morgan and Sara Wilson have been integral parts of the Mi-Wil family. At the Fair, the family shows Holstein, Jersey and Guernsey cattle.

Linda Baker of Cheyenne, OK passed away August 23, 2009. She was born June 20, 1952 in Sayre, Oklahoma to Beatrice and Wilbert Haas. Mrs. Baker grew up in Sayre and graduated from Sayre High School in 1972. She was married to Charles Baker on March 15, 1974 and they made their home in the Sunny Point/Grimes area where they operated a Registered Holstein Farm for many years. She was preceded in death by her father, two children, Chad and Jamie Lynn, 1 brother, Calvin Haas. Mrs. Baker is survived by her husband, Charles, of the home; her mother, Bea Haas, Sayre, OK; 2 sisters; 4 brothers, her mother-in-law, Ina Lancaster; a sister-in-law, Charlene Hutchins and husband, Herb, many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Bob PlankRobert Glenn “Bob” Plank of Garden City, Missouri passed away August 9, 2009. Mr. Plank was born November 23, 1921 north of Garden City the son of Oliver Joy and Ida Theresa (Schrock) Plank. On January 25, 1948, Mr. Plank was united in marriage to Lillian Northup (Bartlett) Beckstead and moved to the Kropf farm northeast of Garden City. He later married Erma Ardis (Hutson) Klopfenstein on November 20, 1993 in Garden City. Mr. Plank was a farmer and stockman until his retirement in 1998. He took special pride in raising Le Darno Holstein cattle. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Garden City. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving from 1942 until 1945 in the Philippines and Okinawa. He was a member of the NRA, the Index Masonic Lodge #54 A.F. & A.M., the VFW Post #4409, Harrisonville, Missouri. He attended Clearfork Rural School and the Garden City High School. He enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting and gun collect-ing. In later years, he spent time woodworking, playing cards and attending Senior Citizens dances. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian on December 3, 1992; four broth-ers, Clayton, Roy, Stanley and Gerald; two sisters, Jew-ell Plank and Glada Riffle; two sons-in-law, Dick Bird and Darrell Wilson; a step-grandson, Michael Bird. He is survived by his wife, Erma A. Plank of the home; a sister, four step-daughters; 13 step-grandchildren; 21 step-great-grandchildren; several step-great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Mr. Plank will be remembered for his strength during hard
times, his love of family and friends and many, many “Plank Pranks.” Funeral services were August 14, 2009 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri. Family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
Robert WilshusenRobert Fredrick Wilshusen, 66, of Mora, Missouri passed away August 15, 2009, at his home. He was born on Au-gust 16, 1942, in Sedalia, a son of Paul G. and Olga (Bauer) Wilshusen. On September 6, 1942, he was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church of north Lincoln and was confirmed on March 25, 1956, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cole Camp. He attended the Trinity Lutheran School in Cole Camp from 3rd through 8th grade. In 1960, he graduated from Lincoln High School. On May 25, 1964, he was united in marriage to Margaret Miner. For several years, he drove a milk truck and worked for Hillard Stelling and Leroy Bugh. He moved from his farm near Cole Camp to his current farm near Mora in 1966. In January of 1978, he transferred his church membership to St. John’s Lutheran Church of rural Cole Camp, where he served as trustee, elder, president and secretary. For 53 years, he was a dairy farmer and he helped start the Tri-County Dairy Day and served as president for 20 years. He was a member of the Cole Camp Antique Tractor Association and had served as president for several terms. He served on the Extension Council and as a 4-H leader and was active with FFA. Mr. Wilshusen loved going to antique farm shows, working on old farm equipment, and teaching and demonstrating the old ways of farming. He took pride in knowing he was help-ing to feed and provide for the physical needs of others. His ultimate goal was to leave his farm better than he found it. He is survived by: his wife Margaret Wilshusen of the home; two sons, John David Wilshusen and his wife Patti of Everett, WA, and James Michael Wilshusen and his wife Pam of Mora; one sister, Mary Haluptzok and her husband Phil of Ionia; and four grandchildren, Kaileigh, Ryan, Michael, and Jacob. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Daniel Robert Wilshusen. Funeral services were held at August 20, 2009, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The family suggests memorial contributions be given to Cole Camp Food Bank, Lutheran School Associa-tion, or Cole Camp Antique Tractor Association in care of the Fox Funeral Home, Cole Camp.
Unruh Joins Holstein USACallie Unruh of Walton, Kansas has joined Holstein Association USA in the position of a temporary Regional Representative. She started training in Brattleboro in late August and will work in the central region under the guidance of Steve Peterson. This re-gion is short two field representatives due to the departures of both Larry Kleiner and Becky Kramer. Unruh is a 2009 graduate of the Kansas State University with a degree in Agriculture, Animal Sciences and Industry. At KSU, she was actively involved in the Dairy Judging Team and received a Gold Team Award as a member of Kansas State’s Dairy Chal-lenge Team. She is actively involved in their family’s Prairie Sun Farm. In 2008, Unruh showed the Best Bred and Owned animal of the Southern Spring National Junior Show. Prairie-Sun Max Rosabel was also the Res. Intermediate Champion that day. Callie is the daughter of Doug and Beth Unruh. She can be contacted at 316-772-1884 (cell), [email protected]
2009 has been a rough year for everyone involved in the dairy business. With the milk prices so low, it has been very hard for anyone to just break even. But the last couple months I have been impressed with the resiliency of the dairy farmer, especially the Registered Holstein breeder. The National Holstein Convention in California drew good crowds and even though financially it has been tough, the adults and juniors present were positive and committed to the future of the dairy industry. One of the biggest discussions at Convention was the proposed Dairy Stabilization Program. It was endorsed by the delegates present Your Holstein staff and board has spent considerable time the last month final-izing a plan that will be submitted to Congress. Another positive time was the Missouri State Fair. Even in these challenging economic times, the number of dairy cattle shown was stable. Other state fairs and late summer shows are also reporting solid numbers of cattle. The exhibitors at Sedalia were upbeat and glad to be around other dairy pro-ducers from around the state. It was evident that the general public is very interested in the dairy industry. Over 1,000 adults and kids ‘milked’ a portable cow during the first three days of the Fair!Kate Geppert

2012 3-Yr-Old Sho-Me Holstein FuturityPURPOSE: The Missouri Holstein Futurity is a segment of the Missouri Holstein Association to stimulate interest in the breed-ing and exhibiting of outstanding Registered Holsteins in Missouri. Recognizing the accomplishments of the large and small breeder, and those of junior association members.
ELIGIBILITY:Any Registered Holstein female at least 87%RHA born in Missouri and bred by a member of the Missouri Holstein Association that was born between Sept. 1, 2008 and Aug. 31, 2009 is eligible for the 2012 3-Yr-Old Sho-Me Futurity.
FEES: One-Time Nomination Fee of $25.00 Due January 1, 2010 Renomination and futurity entry due September 30, 2012

Production Awards - $100.00 will be taken from the purse and divided among the top three cows shown in the 3-Year-Old Futurity Class on the basis of their 305 day 2-Year-Old Milk production. Only official DHIA or DHIR records will be considered and these records must accompany the animal and be checked by the committee before the show. The $100.00 will be divided as follows: $50.00, $30.00, $20.00 to the cow with the first, second & third highest actual 2-Year-Old milk record respectively.2. Holstein Launches Adult Membership Contest
With a goal of welcoming 1,000 new adult members to Holstein USA, an adult member-ship drive was announced in June. The contest will run May 1, 2009 to May 1, 2010 and the ‘Total Members’ number from the official ‘Delegate Allowed’ list will determine each state’s increase in membership. The state with the largest increase in total number of members will be recognized at the 2010 Na-tional Convention in Minnesota. A new membership application and promo-tional flyer is being developed and will soon be available at www.holsteinusa.com. On the application, there will be a place for applicants to put a person’s name that referred them to join. Referrals will be tracked to recognize those successfully recruiting new members. The campaign especially targets graduating junior members, detailing the first steps they can take to become active as an adult.
Holstein Enthusiasts Have Fun in the California Sun
The capital city of Sacramento played host to the 2009 National Holstein Convention. The high temperatures of 107 degrees did not deter Holstein members from across our region enjoy-ing all that California had to offer. In addition to the planned convention activities, many side trips to San Francisco, Napa Valley and Yellowstone National Park were highlights that won’t be soon forgotten. The Dairy Price Stabilization Plan was an important topic. Dr. Robert Cropp, Professor Emeritus and Dairy Marketing Economist, University of Wisconsin-Madison made a presenta-tion to all attendees detailing the plan. The Holstein board’s Milk Marketing Committee and Dr. Cropp then answered questions. Genomics was another hot topic. A special early bird session featuring a panel of breeders and industry representatives was a popular feature. Panelists included Angie Coburn, Dairy Procurement Manager for Genex Cooperative; Greg Coyne, Coyne Farms, Avon, N.Y.; Dr. Marj Faust, Director of External Research for ABS Global; Bob LaSalle, Slo-Train Holsteins, Firebaugh, CA.; Pat Maddox, RuAnn & Maddox Dairies, River-dale, CA.; and Bill Peck, Welcome Stock Farm, Schuylerville, N.Y. There was a wide variety of participation with genomics among the panelists. Some breeders have fully embraced the technology and others have more of a wait and see attitude. Genex has been very progressive in marketing genomic young sires, while ABS has been more cautious. During the general session, a resolution was presented asking the AI studs to allow Holstein breeders the ability to genomic test their own bulls. After much discussion, the resolution passed. The bylaw proposal which would allow the Board of Direc-tors to establish rules for the revocation of a prefix due to non-use was approved. At the board meeting following the annual meeting, the board approved the following policy. A breeder may request to permanently retire a prefix for $100. After 20 years of non-use, the board may consider revoking a prefix. At that time, the board will either retire the prefix permanently or revoke the breeder’s right to the prefix. Larry Tande of Medford, MN was elected to serve a two year term as president of Holstein USA. Tande, the previous vice-president, follows Doug Maddox of Riverdale, CA who completed his tenure as President. Selected as the new Vice-President was Chuck Worden of Cassville,NY. Elected to the Board of Directors were Bill Wright, Holden, UT; Jonathan Lamb, Oakfield, NY; Robert Nigh, Viroqua, WI; and Hank van Exel, Lodi, CA.
Jan and Jeff King of Kings-Ransom Farm, LLC, Schuyler-ville, N.Y., were honored as Holstein Association USA’s 2009 Distinguished Young Holstein Breeders. Robert Schauf, Barron, WI. was chosen as the recipient of Holstein Association USA’s 2009 Elite Breeder Award. The award recognizes a Holstein breeder who bred outstanding animals, making a notable contribution to the advancement of the Holstein breed in the United States. Dennis Wolff, Millville, Pa., was selected as the 2009 recipi-ent of Holstein Association USA’s Distinguished Leadership Award. This award recognizes an individual who has made a career of providing outstanding and unselfish leadership for the betterment of the dairy industry. Recognized at the convention as 40 year Holstein members were Harold, Anthony & Herbert Boedeker, Elsberry, MO; Clejo King, Clever, MO: and Gene Knackstedt, Inmnan, KS; At the board meeting prior to Convention, a recommendation from the Show Committee was approved that would create a preliminary list of nominees qualified to judge all National Holstein shows, including Junior shows. Once finalized by the board, the Holstein Association National Judges List would become effective in 2010. The board approved the creation and design of an Official Holstein International Pedigree which expresses crude protein and milk production in kilograms.

The Missouri Holstein Association is compiling a book detailing the history of Missouri Holsteins. Dr. John Un-derwood has taken the lead with this project and is looking for information. They are trying to make this as detailed as possible and is quite of bit of missing information. There will be a category highlighting some of the top cows in the state. They would like the name and any informa-tion you may have about an animal that qualifies in the following category: Gold Medal Dams 200,000 lb Cows 4E and Higher Cows Cows EX-94 points and up Dr. Underwood has gone through old Missouri Holstein Journals, Mid-States Holstein News and many old Holstein Worlds, but all animals may not have been identified, especially GMD and 200,000 cows. They plan to include any animal that was bred by a Missouri breeder, even if they have been sold to another breeder and that record or classification was made in another state. For Example: Char-Land Fury Penny was classified 4E in California. She was bred by Charles Moreland, Harrison-ville, and owned part of her life by Boyd Brothers and the College of the Ozarks. She will be listed in the 4E and higher category, even though she was not in Missouri when she was scored 4E.
