Genomics & Proof Changes Concerning Dairymen
The breeding program on each farm to me is the heart of that herd. There are many different focuses - high production, high type, show-ring style, the index game. The Registered Holstein breed has developed over time and allowed dairymen with dif-ferent goals and ideals to thrive and be a success. There was value in all. Unfortunately in the past few months there have been some changes that are striking fear in many dairymen.
In April 2009, genomic predications were added to the A.I. bull proof information. Genomics had been a key research project between the A.I. industry, USDA and Holstein USA. The research showed that the information was good and could help reduce bias present in the proofs. I remember being excited about genomics and thought that some of the results could be interesting. All of us look at bull proofs or even some cow indexes and wonder if it’s real. This would be a way to know. An individual gene would not care if there was a bull contract or expensive sale choice riding on its results. But the one bit of information that kept going around in my mind was that they were predicting genomics to only be 70% accurate. Bulls and cows would still have the chance to crash and burn when their actual progeny produc-tion and type was available. To me, genomics was and is a management tool, not the absolute bible.
During the 14 months that genomic information has be-come readily available, it has really caught fire. Today, the A.I. industry is promoting their genomic young sires as much or more than their proven sires. You must really read the proof information to be able to determine if it is genomic or actual with genomic included.
Many breeders have submitted samples to have their cows tested. Some cows have gone up and some cows have gone down, which has impacted that cow’s value. Everyone knew that was possible and was risk they were willing to take. We have genomically tested three animals. One went up slightly, one stayed basically the same, and one went down slightly. Two of those animals are cows and their genomic information seems to match them fairly well.
The January and April proof runs this spring have been a concern for many dairymen. In January the TPI formula was updated placing more emphasis on health traits, especially productive life, while decreasing milk production and final PTAT. In April, USDA made a couple decisions that really stirred things. Imputed genomic information was included and in a more controversial move, they rescaled cows PTAs. They scaled down the difference between a cow’s PTA and her PA (parent average). This change only applied to genomi-cally-tested animals.
I am on the Genetic Advancement Committee. So you can start sending me those emails and calls. At the GAC meeting last November, the TPI formula was hotly debated. There are some who fully believe that health traits should be our main focus. As I see the problems our farm has (and I think we re-ally try hard) breeding animals and problems with stillbirths, I would like to see improvement. I have never been a huge fan of productive life; I think each farm’s own management is a key reason behind each cow’s actual productive life. The Holstein breed has made tremendous strides in milk produc-tion and we should probably switch the emphasis from milk to components. I am a firm believer in type, but I understand the desire to try to reduce stature. We had 64 inch Durham. She was a pretty cow, but my Dad who is 6’2” had to actually stand on the bottom rails to breed her and she was always a breeding problem, not to mention, she was not the most efficient animal. Reducing final PTAT was to get at stature, but by leaving the existing emphasis on UDC and FLC, then those traits should actually have a bigger impact.
Imputed genomics makes some sense. This April, a dam’s genomic information was imputed if she had five or more genomically-tested progeny. In these cases, the genomics on each animal’s sire is already known and if the animal has been tested, she had to either get those genes from her mother or her father. If they didn’t come from her father, then they had
to come from her mother. That is fairly similar to how PTA’s were affected previously. The production and type of a cow’s progeny factored back and was reflected in her own CTPI.
For me, the biggest problem was the rescaling of a cow’s PTA. Your Holstein Board or GAC committee was not made aware of this decision until after the April proof run. This de-cision by USDA overnight dramatically impacted the value of many animals and made people question what was going on. Since this only impacted animals with genomic information, it really hit some breeders hard, especially financially. Many had purchased ‘high’ genomic animals, only to see their numbers and value fall overnight, and to make matters worse, they had no idea it was coming. To make it even more confusing, USDA divided the cow population into those with genomic information and those without. The cows with no genomic information were not included and their information did not change.
Many of these changes have been done to ‘make informa-tion more accurate’. Genomics have been scaled down on both the male and female side because USDA believes they were over-evaluated. Unfortunately what these changes have done is just to increase confusion. Your Holstein board and management are very concerned and will be working to try to make sure we are all on the same playing field. Breeding and mating decisions are each farm’s individual decision, but it is the responsibility of the A.I. industry, USDA and Holstein USA to give each dairymen the correct tools so they can make their choice.

From the FieldHowdy from Texas and congratulations to everyone for another successful spring show season! As we prepare for upcoming fall shows, we have approached a season many dread: sum-mer. The temperatures and humidity will continue to rise, and this will inevitably affect our cattle with milk production and conception rates. Over the past year we have seen some of the toughest times the dairy industry has ever experienced. As you make financial and managerial decisions for each of your operations, big or small, I urge you to turn to Holstein Association, USA. Holstein recognizes these tough times and we continue to listen to the needs and concerns of our over 30,000 members. Efforts, such as the Dairy Price Stabilization Program, are underway and online at www.holsteinusa.com so our members may be kept current. Holstein will continue to provide for our members and offer various programs, products and services that can add value to your herd and save you money. By simply staying current with your State and National Holstein Memberships you can save up to four times the cost of registering your animals, when compared to non-member rates. You will also save when registering calves every three months; in doing this you will receive the lowest possible registration fee. Our electronic registration software, EASY, has become the method of choice to many identifying calves. Last year over 70% of all applications were sent to Brattleboro, VT in this form. When you utilize EASY and take advantage of Holstein Tag ID, you will receive a $1.00 discount for every animal less than six months of age. An additional way to ensure your herd progresses towards the level of identification you desire is to enroll on Holstein COMPLETE. This program cuts your costs while still allowing you to take advantage of over a dozen services and features we offer. If you would like more information on how to enroll your herd on COMPLETE or get a free estimate contact your Regional Representative today.

Roundtable Features Spring Showring SuccessThe champions of the spring are cel-ebrated in this issue of the roundtable. Featured are the Grand Champions of the Southern Spring National, the Kansas and Texas All-State Shows and the Missouri Spring Show. Included are Stanley Haedge, Hico, Texas; John Koster, Comanche, Texas, Eric Ling, Springfield, Missouri and David Rot-tinghaus, Seneca, Kansas.Describe your farm operation.Haedge: We milk around 200 Holstein cows & have 200 Holstein heifers with approximate 90% registered close to Hico, Texas. I have two hired hands and myself that do all the work including milking, breeding, feeding and farming. My wife Brenda works for a veterinary firm & supply company but does all the bookkeeping. The cows are housed in a freestall barn and are milked twice daily in a double 8 herringbone parlor. We own 360 acres. Of that about 300 acres is farmed, mainly Tifton Bermuda for hay and wheat, sorghum & corn for silage. We feed a TMR.Koster: We are an 800-cow free stall dairy located in central Texas with around 300 head of Registered Hol-steins. Our current BAA is 104.3 with a 23,000 lb herd average. In addition, we farm 700 acres with Tifton 85 and coastal Bermuda grass.Ling: We are primarily a family opera-tion that has been dairying in Springfield since 1905. We have been entirely regis-tered since 1936 with Holsteins. Today the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generations are involved in the operation. We are cur-rently milking 145 cows.Rottinghaus: I am the third generation to dairy on our farm. We milk 375 Reg-istered Holsteins and farm 800 acres of alfalfa and corn. Currently we have 25 Excellent cows and a RHA of 21,800M 820F. In the last several years, we have had 3 All-Americans, 4 Res. All-Ameri-cans and an All-Canadian Jersey.Describe your champion cow.Haedge: Desthaven Skyfame Jenna is an EX-93 point five year old. She has two daughters, a December 2008 Miles daughter & December 2009 Jasper daughter. She has six Shottle embryos implanted. I bought her from Steve Heuer in Minnesota as yearling heifer for my daughter Jenny to show. She did ok as a heifer but not great. The last year Jenny was eligible to show as a junior, she won showmanship at the Southern National with her.Koster: Holbric Genius Laurel-ET VG-88 was the 1st 4-Year Old and Grand Champion of the Texas State Holstein Show. Her current milk record at 3-04 in
96 days with 8,768 milk 3.8%F 3.4%P. She is sired by an Inspiration son of In-spiration Gigi. Her dam is an Excellent Arsenio. We purchased Laurel last fall from Nate Goldenberg.Ling: Robthom Carolina Boss is a Boss-ide Ruben daughter from Robthom Sic-ily Rudolph who is a sister to Robthom Moscow. Carolina is 10th generation Robthom and 11th generation Very Good or Excellent. She is a 7 year old and has had 4 calves.Rottinghaus: Aspen is EX-92 and we will classify again in August. She was only two weeks fresh at the Kan-sas State Show this March. She is the easiest cow we’ve had to work with. She actually looks better in late lactation. She wants to milk hard, but we try and slow her down. Currently her top record is 26,000M, but she will have a higher record this lactation. Aspen was purchased as a springing heifer in the Kansas State Sale in 2006 from Roy Buessing. She has a G+83 Redliner 2-yr old and an Advent 2-yr old milking, along with a Redliner yearling, an Advent springer and seven Advent calves. What are some of her other show winnings?Haedge: Grand champion Southern National Junior show 2009; Grand champion; Fort Worth Livestock Exposi-tion Open & Junior show 2010; Grand champion San Antonio Livestock show Junior Show 2010; Grand champion Southern National Holstein Show Open show 2010; Res champion Southern National Holstein Junior show 2010; Honorable mention Grand Midwest Spring National Junior Show 2010.Koster: In 2008, Laurel was the 7th Jr. 2-Year Old at the Mid-East Fall National in Harrisburg. Earlier this year she was the 3rd 4-Year Old at the Fort Worth Stock Show.Ling: Carolina won first place in the Missouri 3-yr-old Futurity. She was first place senior 3 yr old and grand cham-pion at the Ozark Empire Fair in 2006. She was also Reserve all Missouri Aged Cow in 2009, Grand at 2010 Missouri Spring Holstein Show, First Aged Cow and Best Bred Owned at 2010 Southern National.Rottinghaus: Aspen was Grand at the New York Spring Show and the National Red & White Convention Show in 2009. She was Intermediate Champion & 1st Jr. 2-Yr Old at the Red & White show at World Dairy Expo. Last year she was 2nd 5-Yr Old and Hon. Mention Grand at the Red & White Show at WDE. This is her 2nd consecutive win at the All-Kansas Show and has won the last two Kansas
State Fairs. She was also Grand at the Mid-East Fall National as a 4-Yr Old.Are your show cattle treated differ-ently than all the other animals on your farm?Haedge: The show cattle are kept with all other cattle with no special treatment unless separated a few days before show time to get used to ration that is not silage TMR.Koster: Our show cattle are not treated any differently than the other cattle. They are housed with the rest of the herd in the free stalls.Ling: They are treated the same as the rest of the herd until a few days prior to the show. Then kept in a pack barn and grass hay is added to their diet. Once the cows return home, they are put out with the rest of the herd.Rottinghaus: Yes, the show cows do not get TMR. We house 6-8 cows in a pack barn and they are only fed hay and grain.A National Holstein Judges list has been created. National shows are required to select judges from that list. Is that a good idea?Haedge: I think having a list is a good idea. It services as a screening process to select the most capable judges for national shows and not just a popular-ity contest.Koster: Yes, it is good to select judges from the list. Then you know that the judge is qualified.Ling: It depends on who is on the list.Rottinghaus: Yes, it is good to know that the judge is qualified and was not picked on his reputation. It’s a good way to have consistency between the judges. It’s also easier for state fairs and other shows to pick judges when there is a list. Why should commercial dairyman attend a Registered Holstein show?Haedge: It gives the commercial dairy-man an idea of what type of premier cows are in the industry. Most are not just show cattle but also top producing cows in their herds and some are poten-tial bull mothers.Koster: A show will allow commercial dairymen the chance to see what certain bulls have to offer the breed.Ling: Attending the registered Holstein shows allow any dairyperson to visit with the breeders and exhibitors of some of the best cows in the nation. This can provide positive insight into the dairy point of view and how other dairy owners run their operations.Rottinghaus: To see the genetic prog-ress of what the breed is trying to de-velop. Most commercial dairymen go

to shows like World Dairy Expo for the trade shows. What bull do you wish was still alive and had semen readily available?Haedge: There are plenty of bulls avail-able with such more genetic improve-ment so why would you want to go back to old genetics.Koster: Durham. I wish we had used him more and that I still had that op-portunity.Ling: Startmore Rudolph because he was one of the most prominent bulls in the pedigrees of some of the most out-standing cows in the breed today. He is one of the few bulls that will sire dairy strength regardless of whether the dam is frail or smooth.Rottinghaus: SWD Valiant. He did more good for our herd than any other bull. We’ve had more Excellent from him than any other bull. I think he would be a good bull to cross on today’s cattle.Which is a bigger accomplishment – an All-American nomination, a Gold Medal Dam award, or a State Produc-tion Leader? Haedge: I feel getting a gold medal dam is a bigger accomplishment because it is not only the animal but also her offspring.Koster: Homebred All-American. That recognition is the hardest to achieve in my eyes and the greatest accomplish-ment.Ling: Gold Medal Dam Award because it is a combination type, production, longevity, and the ability to transmit of those traitsRottinghaus: I think that they all are
equal, but they have a different place. An All-American is one of the most elite accomplishments ever. A Gold Medal Dam shows that you are breeding con-sistently and developing the right kind of cattle. A state production leader is the most profitable. In January the TPI formula was changed and more emphasis was placed on health traits with less emphasis on final PTAT and milk production. Do you agree with the change? What do you feel should be emphasized?Haedge: I think the change was war-ranted but, I feel good type and produc-tion are still the biggest priority in my herd. Good type has a big influence on most health traits.Koster: There is not enough emphasis on type and there is too much empha-sis on health traits. On my dairy, the balanced cows with good udders and the ones that last the longest. Juror, Durham and Rudolph bloodlines make long lasting cows. I won’t use high health trait bulls with low type.Ling: My personal opinion is that they should not have a TPI Formula. Each trait should be analyzed by which is

important to the breeder and with what Bull they are using to breed with. Furthermore, it seems unreasonable to determine productive life on a cow that has not completed their first lactation.Rottinghaus: I disagree. I have nothing against health traits, it’s one of the best things that the industry has come up with, but health traits and type should go together. A bad type cow should have a low productive life.If you were not a dairy farmer, what would you be doing?Haedge: I would probably be a high school basketball coach, that’s what I did just out of college for 10 years and enjoyed it and still enjoy sports and competition.Koster: I would be working for Dairy Mating Service (DMS).Ling: Because I was born and raised into dairy farming, I do not know any other way of life than hard work. If I was not dairying, I would be retired and travel-ing throughout this and other countries with my feet in the sand and a drink in my hand.Rottinghaus: Dairy farming is the only thing that I’ve done. I think I would retire if I wasn’t farming.
Spring with her 3rd calf. My dad pur-chased her as a pick of a flush in 2005 from Rob Leach and Jeff MaxeyWhat is your favorite thing about living on a dairy farm? I like helping with the calves, feeding and vaccinat-ing. I also like discing and swathing and picking up hay with the skidster after it is baled. What has been the biggest lesson you have learned in showing cattle? To not cheat when showing the cows. It is also easier to show a heifer or cow if you work with them a lot. What’s the your favorite show you attend? I like the Southern National at Stillwater, Oklahoma because there are more animals in each class. What do you want to do when you are older? I want to be a 4th genera-tion dairy farmer.

Glenn BaylessGlenn Bayless passed away March 26, 2010 after a lengthy illness at the age of 87. He was born Feb. 8, 1923 to Charles and Ethel Mae Bayless in Gentry, Arkansas. When Mr. Bay-less was three, the family moved to Arnett, Oklahoma. Mr. Bayless graduated from Arnett High School in 1941, serving as class president. He was active in sports. He was awarded a
basketball scholarship to Oklahoma Baptist University, but he remained on the farm to help the family. In 1945, Mr. Bayless entered the U.S. Army Infantry. In 1945, Mr. Bayless married Elsie Louise Fritzler. To this union three boys were born: Gary Glenn, Kendall Ray and Norman Leslie. Glenn and Elsie Bayless lived on the farm northeast of Arnett until poor health required them to move to the Shattuck Nursing Center in 2004. Mr. Bayless enjoyed farming and dairying with his fam-ily and friends. He was a member of the Oklahoma Holstein Association, where he served as president, and Holstein As-sociation USA. He was a faithful member of the Arnett First Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Sunday school teacher, youth leader and song leader. His family was very important to him. He enjoyed spending time fishing, quail hunting and watching his grandchildren’s sports activities. Family get-togethers usually included sing-ing old hymns which Mr. Bayless enjoyed sharing. He was always an encourager and lived his faith in all of his actions and deeds. He is survived by his wife, Elsie and sons, Gary and wife Dixie, Kendall and wife Sue, and Norman all of Arnett; 8 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other family and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a great-grand-daughter.

A cow family that orignated in Pennsylvania from 1950-1972 in the herd of F. Glenn Peffer (FGP Osborndale) travels to Ohio, Vermont, Tennessee and finally Missouri where Dixie-Lee Aspen was born. Sired by the Pennsylvania bull, Singingbrook Mascot, she was mated to another Pennsylvania bull, Pen-Col Duster, to produce Dixie-Lee Audrey. Since she was a daughter of their own Duster bull, the Wolfe’s of Pen-Col Farms purchased her and brought her to PA. After a decade of Pennsylvania breeding, the time has come to re-introduce the family to the rest of the country. Worldwide, Audrey has a Durham son in Spain, ‘Pearls Rising Star’ and Garter Allie’s full sister has a Lancelot son in Germany, ‘Aspen’. Amber and her four sons, Lylehaven Ares, Ambition, Amo & Ambrose have made a significant impact on the Holstein breed.

Kicking It Up Missouri Style in 2012Circle your calendar for June 26 -30, 2012! The 2012 National Holstein Convention will be held in Missouri with headquar-ters at the University Plaza Hotel and Convention center in Springfield. Fun is to be had by all. The National Holstein Convention is definitely a family fun time. Nearly half the attendees are Holstein Youth and Springfield is close to lots of fun activities including Branson and Silver Dollar City; the Double A Springfield Cardinals and Fantastic Caverns, a drive-through cave. Missouri will be a great place for a family vacation tied in with meeting fellow Holstein Breeders. For the dairyman who enjoys fishing, Springfield is the headquarters for Bass-Pro. Branson, known for outstanding country music entertain-ment, is just a short distance from Springfield. Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede is an action packed dinner and show. The show consists of 32 magnificent horses, stampeding long-horns, singing and dancing as you enjoy a four course din-ner. The Shoji Tabuchi show is a must for anyone coming to Branson. With over 60 music and variety shows, there is something for everyone. Silver Dollar City is full of “old time crafts, cooking and culture, great performances, rides for all which includes an explosive rollercoaster for the young. Many dairy activities are being planned, including visits to outstanding farms throughout the state. Plans are already underway for the live sale which will feature the best Missouri has to offer. Holstein youth have many activities planned beginning the day they arrive including a dairy quiz bowl, dairy jeopardy, and junior mixers. Missouri has a wealth of attractions for your family to enjoy if you are driving to Springfield or enjoying the pre-convention tours. St. Joseph is home to the “Pony Express”. Kansas City, home to Hallmark Cards, will allow you to learn more about Missouri’s favorite son, President Harry S Truman. In St. Louis, with its big arch where the East meets the West, you can visit the baseball Cardinals or tour the beautiful Purina and Land of Lakes Farms where research is being conducted on all types of animals. Missouri’s water playground, the Lake of the Ozarks is located in the center of the state. See you in Missouri in 2012. Barry Steevens, Missouri 2012 Convention Chair
Celebrating the Region’s 5E CowsIn today’s world, longevity in a Holstein cow may be considered rare. MK-Jalyn Jennys Valintine has stood the test of time and was recently raised to EX-94 and awarded 5E for Cedar Rigde Dairy in Noble, Missouri. Valentine was just fresh in late May and will turn 16 this August.
