EXECUTIVE UPDaTEs

“here it is, fall again”

As fall approaches and harvest is underway, winter and year end are not far away. Activ-ity at Holstein Canada continues to be slightly down from a year ago, but due to the new com-puter system so are our expenses. So a break even year or a slight deficit are likely possible. With the appointment of Linda Ness to head the classification department it will continue to be our main source of income. Using such programs as genomics to identify herd leaders at a young age, classifying young cows to verify our genomic predictions, recording milk production in our large modern parlours and robots, and continuing to register and verify parentage will all be necesary to make our large and small herds effective in the future. As herds get larger the need for cooperation becomes more important. Holstein Canada con-tinues to work and communicate with industry partners on a regular basis to make our industry as efficient as possible.

As fall is harvest time for crops it is also harvest time for Holstein breeders. After a year of feeding, calving, preparing and driving the roads for the next great one, the fall show sea-son is upon us. Western cattle will be heading to Madison early October then coming back west for the BC Fall Show and the Red deer Westerner before heading to the Royal early November. As this is our National Show we are working to make it a very special event with several changes. The Hays Classic, which is the eastern version of WCC, will now be held Tues & Wed, Nov. 8-9. Followed by the R&W Show and 3 heifer classes (including our new June calf class) on Thurs Nov. 10. The Sale of Stars

We have made it thru an eventful and busy summer for Alberta Holstein. First of all, we say thank you to Heidi for the last 10 years of service to Alberta Holstein as our Secretary/Treasurer. Heidi has always performed this job with pride and wanting to do the best for our organization. From all of the little things that take many hours to the big projects such as directories and calendars. As Heidi moves on to her new projects we wish her great success! With that we welcome our two new employees to Alberta Holstein. Benita Hummel will be-come our new branch Secretary/Treasurer and Amanda Hehli will become our Social Media director. We look forward to working and growing with them in their new roles.

Summer has been busy with our dairy show in Millet and the heifer show held in Lacombe in July. It was good to get out and see the upcom-ing generations and great cattle exhibited at these shows. Our WCC team also competed in Manitoba in August and it was wonderful to hear how well our future represented Alberta.

As fall approaches I hope to have a chance to see everyone at the Westerner Championship dairy Showcase in Red deer in October. If we don’t have a chance to catch up there I hope to see you at one of your clubs Christmas parties.

There are new and exciting events happening with Alberta Holstein and we look forward to your input.

Hello, my name is Amanda Hehli and I am covering the new position of Social Media director for Alberta Holstein. I am looking forward to working on the newsletters, website and social media sites. My goal is to make things informative, engaging and user friendly for our members.

A bit about myself, I met my husband Markus at the University of Alberta where we both completed degrees in Animal Science. I come from a commercial beef and grain background, so the dairy industry was a huge learning curve for me but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else now! Together with Markus’ parents, Heini & Ruth, we operate our 90 cow dairy, Mosnang Holsteins just outside of Rimbey. In 2012 I completed the Multimedia and Web design program through Red deer College and have enjoyed doing the website, graphic design and social media work for our farm. Markus and I have 4 little ones, Wyatt, Adair and our new (Convention) twins Sawyer and Georgia! The kids keep me busy along with working on the farm, more in the office than in the barn right now, but I do enjoy both! I also hold a posi-tion as committee member for the Westerner Championship dairy Showcase, which is lots of fun and a challenge to make the show the best it can be.

I am proud to work in this industry and am looking forward to using my skills at Alberta Holsten. I welcome feedback from our mem-bers on improvements & changes you would like to see!

My name is Benita Hummel and I am the new secretary/treasurer for the Alberta Holstein As-sociation. My husband Tim and I have a 120-cow dairy by Picture Butte. We farm 320 acres which include grass, hay and barley. From 2008-2013, I was the secretary of the Green Acres Holstein Club and helped organize many of the events hosted in the south. I am presently employed at the Society for Christian Educa-tion in southern Alberta in the Business Office as clerk. I am actively involved in our church as treasurer and a member of the worship team.

Our family has been involved in 4-H, WCC and the GAHC. We enjoy the fellowship with other members of the dairy industry and are always looking for new ways to improve on the farm.

Our sons are actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the farm and presently are at Lethbridge College to continue their educa-tion with the hope of joining the family farm in the future. Our daughters are in Edmonton employed at Alberta Health Services and at the University of Lethbridge pursuing a Bachelor of Education.

Presently, Tim is completing his last 3-year term on the Alberta Holstein Board. He also served for over 20 years as a member of the GAHC board as treasurer.

I am excited to see where this position will lead and will do my best to serve the members in Alberta.

It has been a busy summer of events through-out Alberta. The Central Club and Northern Club both held successful shows and we are now looking forward to the Westerner Champi-onship dairy Showcase coming up Oct 27-29th in Red deer.

Alberta Holstein will be hosting a Tier 2 Judging School on Thursday Oct. 27, with official and aspiring judges, judging and giv-ing reasons. Producers and 4-H members are welcome to come and judge alongside, but will not be eligible to give reasons. Follow along on Facebook to keep up to date when a judge is selected for the event. Following the Judging School on Thursday evening will be the Youth Show. In celebration of Westerner Park’s 125 Years, at 10:30 on Friday the 28th, Wally Smith, President of dairy Farmers of Canada, will be coming to speak on “the future of the dairy industry and the politics that surround it.” An ice cream bar will be available for all who attend! The Central Club sale will follow and then the Jersey Show Friday evening. Saturday will be the Holstein show and this year a R&W Jr. Champion and Grand Champion will be selected as well. So plan ahead to come and do some judging, listen to a great speaker, take in the sale, shows and trade booths and support our exhibitors and sposnors of the Westerner Showcase!

The Central Alberta Holstein Club has just wrapped up its Barn Cow Competition and the winners in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4+ Lacta-tion B&W and 1st/2nd & 3+Lactation R&W classes will be revealed at the Christmas party in december. A new 80,000 kg Liftetime class was added to this years competition.

We congratulate Katelyn Crest as she was a team member of Team Canada at the 2016 EYBS (European Young Breeders School) in Belgium . Here 130 competitors making up 24 teams compete in judging, clipping, show-manship and conformation. This years team did very well with Grand Champion Calf and Grand Champion Showman as well as ranking 8th overall team. Congratulations Katelyn on placing 2nd in class in showmanship, 4th in con-formation and 14th overall participant.

On Monday morning I flew out to Mon-treal where we met up with the rest of team, Maxime Montplaisir (QC), Julie MacFarlane (QC), Cameron Stockdale (ON), Ava doner (ON), and Kathryn McCully (PEI). When we arrived in Belgium we went on some tours for the day. They took us to AWE, a bull A.I stud, where they showed us where they collect the semen and then where they analyze it and put it in straws etc. Then they showed us where the bulls are housed, each had their own box stall with a run outside. After the A.I. stud we went to L’Herbagere dairy farm. This was a new farm as they had just redone the barn and added two robots. It was a free stall barn with a small pack area for the show cows. On the one side of the barn there were group pens for older heifers that had runs to outside. They also had a couple of group hutches and individual hutches for the smaller calves. They also had a chicken barn with 14,000 chickens that lay eggs for hatch. After the tours we went for supper and then went to the show grounds and got picked up by our host families where we stayed for the week.

Tuesday morning was the first morning of the school, we got our papers to our calves and got some of our supplies for the week. Our calves were already assigned for us so we had to go find our stall area. Once everyone found their stall, the leaders did a demo on how to make a pack as well as a washing demo. When they do the demonstrations they separate the coun-tries into groups, French & English, dutch & German. This way they only have to translate it twice instead of four times. After the two demonstrations we were able to start making bed and washing as well as putting up a dis-play. On Wednesday there was a couple more demos such as clipping, showmanship and how you should be feeding at a show. Thursday we had a classification conference, here we were taught how Belgium classifies, what they have added to the system and what the cows are scored on, it’s very similar to Canada. We also had a marketing conference showing us the best ways to market, how we should market and brand our farms. Friday we judged three heifer classes and two cow classes for practice, as on Saturday we judged the cow class in the show for the competition. Friday night was a mixer night as each country had to make some

kind of food from their country. Saturday was conformation day, Canada did pretty well as we had a really nice group of calves. We placed 4th in one class and also had the grand calf. On Sunday it was showmanship day, there was 11 classes of showmanship. Canada did well in their classes as we were all in the top five and three of us returning for champion. We also took home grand showman coming from Max-ime Montplaisir from Quebec. Team Canada was 8th overall out of 24 teams and individually we were all in the top 50 out of 130 competi-tors, with four of us being in the top 20.

It was a great experience to see a different part of the world and experience a youth show in a different country as a representative for Team Canada. Thanks to the Holstein Canada, Holstein Quebec and Western Canadian Classic who made this opportunity possible to be part of such a program.

The past few months have been very busy for Alberta youth, with 4-H achievement days, 4-H Provincials and WCC, Alberta youth have been working hard and making Alberta Holstein proud.

This summer local clubs, Green Acres, Rol-lyview, Moo’s on the Moo’ve and Udderly Unique, held their club achievement days throughout Alberta and then all came together to compete in the 70th Provincial dairy Show in Olds, Alberta. This is Alberta’s longest running 4-H show and by looking at the old trophies there is so much history in this event. Looking back you now see the 4th genera-tion of dairy families showing and I think that speaks alot for this program.

This year, 43 4-H members from across Alberta competed in the 3 day event of competitions with the final day of showmanship and confor-mation. By looking around the barns and see-ing all the junior members with their younger siblings it looks like this 4-H program is going to be bursting with keen members in years to come.

On August 22nd we saw 26 Team Alberta youth load onto a bus from Olds and head on out to Brandon Manitoba to compete in the 32nd an-nual WCC (Western Canadian Classic). A total of 99 young adults and youth between the ages of 12-21 took part in many activities includ-ing clipping, dairy science quiz, judging, stall competition, showmanship and conformation classes. during these 5 days the youth also participated in fun activities planned for them in the evenings. The purpose of this competition is to provide on opportunity for our youth to improve their skills in leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and public speaking. during this event they have the opportunity to meet new people from across Western Canada and to stimulate and maintain interest in the agricul-ture industry.

As the events played out, Team Alberta had a strong finish with Reserve Champion Show-man, 4 conformation class winners, and members placing in the top 10 for judging, quiz & clipping. Team Alberta placed 2nd in Stall award and 3rd for Premier Province. As we said good-bye to Katelyn Crest, Casey Morey & Chance Hofstra, our aging out participants, we are looking forward to both new and experi-enced members filling these role models shoes.

Following the loss of our great friend Logan Chalack earlier this year, it was decided to start an annual award in his honour; the Logan Cha-lack Heart and Hustle Memorial Award. WCC will be presenting this award to an individual based on personality, leadership, team work and work ethic in memory of Logan who was a past WCC participant and an enthusiastic Hol-stein Breeder. The 2016 award was presented to a very deserving Mark Sweetnam of MB.

re: Electronic documents are a reality! date: August 18th ……………………………….……………………………….……………………………….…………………… Dear Branch colleagues,

with many

committees working to plan rest of our activity year.

When we launched our new Herdbook software last winter, we stated it was built for possibilities and as

we moved further into our development, the changes would be tangible wins for our clients. Today, we

are pleased to share a possibility is a reality: e-documents are here!

Clients have been progressively sending us information electronically, while documents returned by

Holstein Canada have been paper all certificates of registration, pedigrees, invoices and statements,

genotyping requests and awards, etc. Clients are now able to retrieve PDF versions of their official

- unt!

Clients have the option to set their delivery preference to electronic or paper, whichever method is

most efficient for their individual operations. Selecting electronic preference means they no longer wish

to receive printed documents in the mail: less mail, less paper, less filing! E-Documents are available

online, regardless of Electronic or Print & Mail preference.

As many of you are also on the frontlines with producers, we encourage you to check out the following

new feature:

Where do I find my preferences? Once logged into their web account, the preference feature can be

found in the main menu on the left-hand side of their web account.

How do I change my preferences? Categories of documents currently sent via mail are listed under

preferences. Use the radio buttons on the right to indicate their preference.

Can I have different preferences for different documents? Absolutely! If they would like to receive

some categories of documents electronically and others on paper, simply indicate this using the radio

buttons. Remember, the documents will always be available electronically.

How do I know I have e-Documents? When selecting electronic preference, they can choose to

receive an email notification when new e-Documents are available, or they can request not to be

notified at all!

The 4th annual Breakfast on the Dairy Farm event was held on a sunny Sat-urday morning June 18th, 2016 at Yff Dairy, between Penhold and Innisfail.

Just over 500 visitors came out to enjoy a hot and healthy breakfast and toured around to see a veterinarian and a hooftrimmer at work. They became acquainted with a milk parlour, what a milk cow consumes, how artificial insemination works and even learned something about manure recycling. One of the highlights of the day was that a calf was born in the strawpen.

Visitors could enjoy activities like facepainting, puzzling, practice milking on the Race The Farmer Cow, paint or capture a portrait from a cow or calf and visit the petting pen.

With help from 60 volunteers, at the end of the morning, all visitors were treated with ice cream and a ride on the tractor and wagon back to the parking lot.

An inaugural Breakfast on the Dairy Farm was held in the south as well this year. Thank you to the Van Asch family for hosting and organizing a great event that saw 450 attendees enjoy a day on the farm!
