On the coverAfter years of planning, Missouri is ready to roll out the welcome mat for Holstein enthusiasts as they host the 2012 National Holstein Convention in Springfield June 27-30. There will be plenty of opportunity to see top herds and outstanding sale cattle, visit with friends, enjoy some of Branson’s best, and see some of the beautiful Ozark scenery. The cover photo was taken near the Piney Creek Wilderness area near Shell Knob, Missouri looking over Table Rock Lake.Julie Brown, former executive secretary of the Missouri Hol-stein Association, took this picture as she was exploring land that had originally belonged to her father’s family. The September Mid-States will feature a full re-cap of all the Convention activities as Missouri asks you to ‘Get Your Kicks on Route 66!’

National Director Notes ...I have been asked several times why the Holstein Association has not endorsed the proposed Dairy Data Alliance. I will do my best to explain why we have taken the stance we have and where we are going. First of all why are we at where we are now? The biggest thing driving all of this is the fact that the current genomic testing agreement expires next year. The AI organizations have had exclusive control of who tests the bulls of the breed. When the current agreement expires everyone would in effect be able to genomically test their own bulls and then market them in the way they feel they can get fair market value for them. Obviously this had been a contentious issue with some parties involved with the proposed alliance. What has been proposed? The proposed DDA -which consists of the Breed Associations, NAAB, DHIA, and Allied Industry-would have total control of all information both phe-notypic and genomic that has been collected and paid for by farmers to date and in the future. There are concerns that dairymen may not be able to access some of this information or may have to pay for it again to see the results. There has also been a push to get our genomic evaluations out of the hands of the USDA and controlled by the DDA. The current genetic evaluations done by the USDA are unbiased and are recognized as the gold standard of evaluations in the world. The DDA to this point has no money, no employees, no office, no assets, and no set in stone way of being funded. No one has said who or how the genetic evaluations would be done. How much would genomic services cost us? Would they be available for both male and female animals? At this point in time with all of these unanswered ques-tions still up in the air we have not felt comfortable giving away all that you dairymen have spent years putting together. We as a board have had many hours of discussion and always the reaction is the same and that is to protect the interests of the dairy farmers. If you have any questions feel free to call. See you at con-vention. Roy Buessing

From the Field ...Summertime!!! Baseball games, days at the lake, family vaca-tions….oh, and did I mention longer working days with higher temperatures?! Ready or not the heat is coming! With heat and milk production not making a very good team, I encour-age you to allow Holstein Association, USA to work as an advi-sor for your operation. My motto, “work smarter, not harder!” Whether you have a herd of 24 cows or a herd of 24,000 cows Holstein has a number of programs and services to help your operation reach its goals! We have many exciting new additions to our already pre-mier programs and services for 2012, including:

The 15th-50th test ordered will yield a 3% credit to-wards COMPLETE, while the 51st and beyond test will yield a 7% credit towards COMPLETE!

Growing up on a dairy-farm I understand the importance on making sure your herd is always moving in the direction of better genetics and continuing to add value, all while saving money. Allow your Regional Representative to create a plan for you with options to further your business with Holstein Association, USA and add to the quality herd you’ve built through many generations of hard work.

New Use For Recylcled Show

Pants!Vernon and Marian DeWerff (also known as Ell Bar Holstein Farm) of Ellinwood, Kansas were given this homemade throw using their grandchildren’s show pants. It was made by daughter-in-law Kathy DeWerff for their 59th wedding anniversary in November. Much of the seams of the show pants had to be ripped apart in order to get the squares the desired size. Four of the grandchildren listed showed in various shows throughout their 4-H career and the other seven are the remaining grandchil-dren. If you look closely, you might still see light ‘soiled spots’ which bring fond memories.

Spring Show Success From Across the RegionThe June roundtable focuses on some of the spring show winners from across the region. Included in the roundtable are John Denbigh of the University of Mis-souri, Columbia, MO; Stanley Headge, London & Kline Jones of Kow-Castle Holsteins, Hico, TX; Dwight Rokey, Sa-betha, KS; Chad Steinberger, Windthorst, TX; Bailee Whitehead, Conway, MO; and Kelsey Ling Zydenbos.Describe your show winning animal.Denbigh: Our Junior Champion heifer is a stylish September 2011 Windy-Knoll-View Pronto daughter from a VG-85 Dur-ham with over 100,000 lifetime.Haedge: She is a five year old Talent daughter scored EX91 with an excellent mammary. Not the biggest cow but very correct in all traits.Rokey: Rokey Benfer Rman Cutie-ET is a fall calf. She is a Redman out of an EX Starfire then EX92 Caramac.Steinberger: Tierney is a home bred Ex-cellent Durham from a home bred Excel-lent Roy. She’s tall, long, and angular.Whitehead: Whitehead Astro Coco is the VG-85, senior 2 year old, Astronomical daughter from Whitehead Outside Cha-nel. Although she is projected to complete a 25,000 pound 305 record, her over-whelming strength makes it challenging to keep her in a show ring ready state.Zydenbos: Lilah is a Lou that goes back to the Eldor Saber Pansy family. She’s a bit on the smaller side for a show cow, but the perfect size for profitability. She has a lot of dairy strength and a great udder. Her dam, Robthom Lilac Morty was also a good show cow and I won a lot of Junior shows with her when I was younger. We actually just flushed her dam to Integrity and Hero and flushed Lilah to Braxton. I’m sad to see Lilah leave the farm in our tag sale this summer, but I’m also excited to see what her daughters will go on to achieve. What is her previous show success?Denbigh: The Missouri Spring Show is the first time she was shown.Haedge: She was Honorable Mention Grand at Fort Worth show 2012.Rokey: We had just shown her once at the Southern National where she placed 1st in the fall calf class then went on to be Reserve Jr. champion.Steinberger: Tierney has done quite well. She was Grand Champion at the Ft. Worth open and Jr. show this year as well as Grand at the Texas Black and White show, and the San Antonio Jr. ShowWhitehead: Although she was not my favorite as a heifer, Dad saw the poten-tial for a good cow in her and soon Coco was second place fall calf at the 2010 Southern Spring National Jr. Show and second place fall yearling at the 2011 MO Spring Jr. Show.Zydenbos: She was Intermediate Champion at both the Fort Worth Stock-show and the Southern Spring National in 2011.

What do you like most about your show winner.Denbigh: When making the original selection, the first thing we noticed was she was three inches taller than the other calves in the pen. That is always a good place to start. Also, we noticed the dairyness in the front end. The final decision was we liked the correctness of the foot and leg.Haedge: She is a cow that is easy to get ready for show day. Milk her out square and wait for show time. Excellent mam-mary – lots of rib and good feet and legs.Rokey: Cutie has an extreme openness to her rib with strength to go with her dairyness, great width through her rump, walking out on a nice set of feet and legs.Steinberger: Tierney is one of those cows that is very easy to get ready. We just need to get her to the show a few days early, keep feed in front of her, milk the udder square, and put as many hours of milk in her as you want. We’ve never had too much milk in her. Her best trait to me is her angularity. She is long, tall, runs uphill, and has an awesome rump angle and rump width, while being very dairy.Whitehead: While Coco has the eye appealing traits that carry her through the show ring, I most ad-mire her strength and functionality. When cows aren’t in the show pack, they need to be efficient in our barn. Zydenbos: I love the family she comes from, her dam, sisters... All of them are just phenomenal cows that may not always place top at shows, but you love having them in the herd and working with them. Last year Lilah broke her hock so I was extremely happy to see her do so well and not let the injury hold her back. What show do you enjoy the most?Denbigh: We only attend the Spring Show and the State Fair. We enjoy both. The Spring Show is close to home, so if our students are interested it’s a good place for them to get involved. With the State Fair, we typically take more Guernsey’s and are more selective with our Holsteins. Haedge: The southern national show.Kline Jones: My favorite show to attend each year is the Fort Worth Livestock Show. Although it is a week of hard work and spending money, I love to be in the barns with the animals. I enjoy competing in the dairy judging contest there and watching the highly competi-tive open show.London Jones: I like the San Antonio Stock Show; this is the place where I won the ten thousand dollar scholarship. The junior show is tough because everyone wants to win the scholarship. They have great facilities and even help you unload your tack.Rokey: I enjoy going to all shows and seeing all the great cattle. I would have to say that the hospitality and sponsors at the Southern National are second to none.

Zydenbos: Southern National and Expo are always a lot of fun. My favorite though has to be the MO state fair because it’s one I’ve gone to every year, and it almost feels like a reunion.Steinberger: Our show string attends 3 what you would call “big shows” each year and those are Ft. Worth, Texas State Show, and the Southern National. We enjoy all of these shows, but I personally enjoy taking my family to San Antonio and Houston each year. Usually it’s just Stacey, I and the 4 boys. We take a small string and make a family trip out of it. I let the kids do all of the work and we have a blast.Whitehead: I usually exhibit at ten shows, give or take, and they all bring something different to the table. I love that Stillwater is a competitive but re-laxed show, close to home. No show can compete with the cows, sites, and overall atmosphere of a week at the World Dairy Expo. However, just weeks after WDE, Louisville is the perfect chance to excel in the show ring, and see the cows and exhibitors you probably won’t see until the spring shows begin the next year. What is the biggest challenge you face to show cattle.Denbigh: Probably like most people, the cost and finding the time to show.Haedge: Continuously producing ani-mals that can compete. Kline Jones: The biggest challenge I face showing cattle is controlling a 1,500 pound female with an udder filled with milk, and a forceful attitude in the show ring. I’m not always strong enough to handle and present the more aggressive and nervous cows. I do my best, but sometimes I feel that it affects the out-come of the class placing.Rokey: When you know there is cheat-ing or someone trying to get the best of another can be very discouraging.Steinberger: Just finding time to get away from the dairy and all of the things that need to be done at home.Whitehead: Success in not the result of a week at a show, it is the reward for going above and beyond every day, at home. The greatest challenge in showing cattle is finding time to dedicate to the show animals every day, no matter what.Zydenbos: I think it’s a similar issue for a lot of dairymen, but mainly it’s just finding the time. My husband and I run a 500 cow dairy; I’m a full time student and a full time employee at a local farm store. As much as I want to go to every show, it’s simply not a possibility. Why do you enjoy showing cattle?Denbigh: As a student at College of the Ozarks, showing was my first interaction with Holstein breeders around the state. We hope that showing gives our inter-ested students the same opportunity. Secondly, I feel it gives some visibility for the University of Missouri and we want to make that a positive experience. Haedge: It is not necessarily showing the

cattle but being around people at shows who have the same interest with most of the people and helping with the juniors and their families.London Jones: It is fun to go and see how my animals compare to others. I also like the social aspect of showing. I have met new friends and we keep in touch via texting and face book. We are always ready to see each other at the next show.Kline Jones: I enjoy showing cattle because it is very competitive. I love listening to the judge give reasons for his placing, presenting my project to the best of my abilities, and exiting the ring knowing that I did my best.Rokey: I just simply enjoy working with cattle. And seeing other breeders and there stock to see how I can improve in my breeding program.Steinberger: It’s something to do that involves the business we’re in. I’ve never been to a show where I didn’t learn some-thing new, or meet a new friend. And as long as the kids enjoy going to the show, we’ll keep going.Whitehead: For me, showing is a way to test our farms breeding and manage-ment skills against others in the industry. However, it is the people, memories, and connections that are made in the barns and show ring that make showing the most enjoyable.Zydenbos: I love it because it’s something that my family has always done and they instilled such a passion for it in me when I was younger. I remember my summers by what cow I showed that year. I know I’ll always be a part of it and I look forward to teaching my future kids the same things my mother taught me.Who’s your favorite animal you have shown? Denbigh: The cow that has gone on to have the most success is a Pasen Marsh Jr. 2-Year Old we showed in 2008. She was sold shortly after the State Fair and went on to be EX-93 and even made a trip to the World Dairy Expo.Haedge: Desthaven Skyfame Jenna. She was one of the few animals we have shown that did well as a heifer and then better as a cow.London Jones: Desthaven Skyfame Jenna—as a 94 point cow Jenna won many times in the show ring. I was able to win a $10,000 college scholarship with her. She paraded around the ring nice and slow like she knew she was the best!

Rokey: . Rokeyroad Rubens Trista –ET EX-94. Rokeyroad Advent Sunday–ET EX-92. They are my favorites because they are both home bred, they both showed well as heifers and I have had the privilege to work with them and see them develop and show well as older cows. They had great personalities and knew when it was there turn to hit the ring.Steinberger: I would have to say Tierney is right there at the top of the list. How many people can say they had their cow out 4 times this year and she was Grand all four times.Whitehead: In recent years, Indies-View Lulu Jasper has opened countless doors for me within the Holstein industry. How-ever, Klassens Stormatic Val will always hold a special spot as my favorite show animal. Val is the one to blame for giving me the love for the show ring that now drives me in every Holstein endeavor.Zydenbos: I would have to say Robthom Matana Gibson. When she was born it was unbelievably cold out so we built her a pen in the milk barn, and she was unnaturally friendly from being around people constantly, you had to pet her when you walked by. She was also the first cow of mine that went to Expo, and she did well in the junior show. What is your breeding philosophy? Denbigh: We have always tried to breed for udder traits and feet and legs. Over the year, I feel we have made positive strides in that direction. Milk produc-tion will be a breeding criteria as well. Improvements we need to be looking in the future are strength of front end and depth of rib.Haedge: We breed mainly for type and feed production. Rokey: To breed FUNCTIONAL cows that are fun to milk and look at. We strive to make full pedigrees, not getting caught up in any one issue.Steinberger: We breed for type, udders, and feet and legs. I’ve dabbled with a few genomic bulls but mostly use proven sires. When I use a genomic bull, I re-ally pay close attention to cow families. Bobby Griggs has been mating our cows and heifers for about 15 years with the Select Sires SMS program and I am sold on SMS. Coba / Select Sires has been a true asset to our show success.Whitehead: When mating cows, we look to balance dairy with strength, sounds legs and udder that can with stand

many lactations. We breed 75% for type and 25% for production. Under correct management, a sound cow can milk to meet the accepted standard in any herd.Zydenbos: For Craig and I, we are pri-marily focused on breeding the most efficient cow for the way we farm. Strong udders that are easy to milk from the 1st to the 10th lactation, smaller cows so

more feed goes to milk production and less is needed for body maintenance. We’re focused on breeding a cow that will work for us, rather than us trying to work for her. Will genomics have an impact on breeding show winners? Denbigh: At this time, genomics are having no impact.Haedge: The answer is still out on genomics, but I feel gradually it will have an impact on show type. In the past our good show animals have not necessarily come from our best cows. Rokey: Tough question. You can have high type come back on their genomics but that does not mean they will be a show ani-mal. Maybe over the next number of years when they continue to learn more and get more accurate on the snippets, we’ll see it having an impact.Steinberger: Possibly, but I think breeding show winners is more a result of bull selection and mating that cow to the correct bull. Oh, and a lot of luck too.Whitehead: No, genomics will not affect show winners. The only effect that genomics and genomic breeding will have on the show ring is that the judge will be able to make a larger second pull.Zydenbos: Yes. Not in the immediate future but it will eventually. Genomics will prove to be effective in time just like 60 years ago dairymen believed that AI was going to wreck the industry. The biggest thing genomics will cause in the near future will be an increase in young bulls. Many of sire of today’s show winners are not the top bulls according to the TPI list. Will time come when the TPI lead-ers will sire show winners? Denbigh: Probably not. It’s such an accomplishment to have a big time show winner. You should find a bull that works for your operation.Haedge: No I do not. Show cows are related to high type bulls. Total productive index bulls are related to all traits. How many of you have seen an Oman daughter in the show ring? Rokey: ? I think so. If the Holstein breed (association) is trying to improve the “cow” then I think the TPI bull list and the show bull list will definitely move closer together. In my book, you have to have production and type to make a FUNCTINAL cow that can last in the freestall and in the ring. If it doesn’t come

closer or if it moves further apart we are only ruining the breed.Steinberger: No, I don’t think the top TPI bulls will ever con-sistently sire show winners. TPI is not intended to make the show kind. TPI has is place in our industry and is a useful tool.Whitehead: No, not on a regular basis, but there will be an occasional outlier. However, you are comparing Apples and or-anges. (Oman, that was a bad analogy.) Bulls, such as Braxton, have the greatest chance of excelling in type and TPI because they are a cross between elite pedigrees and high type cows with high TPI bulls.Zydenbos: Yeah, we’ve seen it happen for the last 30 some odd years.. Integrity, Valiant, Elevation, Chief Mark, Blackstar, Durham and Goldwyn have all been both top TPI and top show bulls. I think it’ll go in phases where the top TPI bulls aren’t deemed “showy” enough and times when they will be. Lou isn’t considered a top show bull, but I’ve had amazing luck with the way Lilah and her full sister Lola have turned out.

Dr. David Gage Smokler A man of integrity and honor, David Gage Smokler passed away April 6, 2012, with a life fully lived and remarkable legacy at the age of 85. He was a loving son, husband, fa-ther, grandfather, father-in-law, uncle, cous-in and friend. A gentle, kind man, who never met a stranger, David found joy and beauty in all things simple. He was born in Dallas, Texas, December 17, 1926, to Louis Harold Smokler and Pansy Myra Gage. After graduating from Texas A&M as the University’s youngest vet-erinarian at age 19 and returning from his service in the U.S. Army, David married Rosemary Self. Over their 62 years of marriage, he adored his three daughters: Patricia Lewis, Ja-net King, and Susan Graves. He was blessed with five grand-children: Kara and Jared King, Alicia Lewis, and Heather and Dave Graves. David enjoyed the company and conversations he shared with “the chosen” sons-in-law: Ron Lewis, Chad King, and James Graves. As a third generation dairyman with Holtex Farm, David (Doc) Smokler mentored many generations of dairymen and farm-ers. As a premier dairyman, he was a pioneer in artificial breeding starting in the 1940s. He was respected nationally and internationally in the Holstein community. He served as President of the Texas Holstein Association and the Holstein Association USA and led the industry in genetic breeding and dairy management. When asked how he was--he often replied “nearly perfect.” David always said few people had the fun of working their lifetime at something they truly enjoyed. He was fortunate to have found a career in which he was able to combine his pas-sion for nature, the outdoors and animals. A private, family celebration of his life was held. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers a memorial donation to the charity of your choice. Condolences may be offered at www.millerfu-neral.com or 3740 Cartwright Rd., PMB 262, Missouri City, Texas 77459.

Smokler & The Holtex LegacyThe Holtex name is synonymous with Holstein cattle in Texas and throughout the country. W.F. Gage founded the Holtex Farm in 1918. He ordered the house and barn from the Sears and Roebuck catalog. They were shipped via train and assembled on the site. In the 1940’s Louis Smokler operated Holtex Farm. He started North Texas Artificial Breeding Farm and was an all-breed cattle judge. Soon after Dr. David Smokler took over the reins at Holtex. It was during this time that the ‘Bootpeg’ family established itself as one of the premier bloodlines in the country. Holtex Elevation Bootpeg 3E-90 GMD DOM was a third generation Excellent. She had 8 Excellent daughters, 28 Very Good daughters, 6 Gold Medal Dam daughters and 23 Dam of Merit daughters. In addition, she had 14 Excellent and Very Good sons. In addition a great, great granddaughter, Prices Melwood Betsy EX-91 GMD DOM became the #1 TPI cow of the breed. In addition to developing a outstanding herd, Dr. Smokler volunteered his time and talent to both the Texas Holstein Association and the Holstein Association USA. He dedication to improving Registered Holsteins with integrity and grace will be remembered by all. At the Holtex Dispersal in 2000, Dr. Smokler wrote, “Few people have the fun of working their lifetime at something one really enjoys. The anticipation and the thrill of watching the next generation of Holstein cattle and Holstein enthusiasts develop is exciting. The Holstein business is one in which your competitors are your friends. There is great pleasure and satisfaction in having other breeders use Holtex genetics with success. The Holstein business has been good for our family with many friendships, with the breeding of good bulls and cows, and financial success. Our family wishes this for all of you.’

the Holstein Convention!

Convention is Here! The 2012 National Hol-stein convention will soon be here! The Missouri Hol-stein Association has been busy planning and hopes to “show you” a great time. The Missouri Holstein Breeders extend an invitation to you to stop in and visit the outstanding dairy farms across the state as you travel to or from Springfield. Farms and locations can be found on the front page of the convention website. http://holsteinconven-tion2012.com/ Activities kick off at the University Plaza Hotel in Springfield with youth contests and a preconvention tours to southcen-tral Missouri and the Branson area. Wednesday evening we will have a fun filled ‘Family Night’ at Hammons Field, home of the Springfield Cardinals which is located next door to the convention center. Host day on Thursday will take us to sev-eral nearby farms where we will view excellent cattle, along with stops at world famous Bass Pro and PFI Outfitters. Cap-ping the evening will be a wonderful dinner with entertain-ment aboard the Branson Bell Showboat on Table Rock Lake and the Convention Futures Sale. The traditional highlight of the National Convention, the National Sale will be held in air conditioning at the nearby Juanita K Performing Arts Center. Exciting activities are planned for the youth including a day at Silver dollar city and a Friday evening dance in Fantastic Caverns. The Junior Banquet will recognize all the winners from the week’s competitions and will feature Miss Oklahoma, the 1st Runner-Up in the Miss America pageant. The dairy bar will be open all four days of the convention. The convention concludes with an adult banquet Saturday evening while the youth are attending a Springfield Cardinal’s baseball game.

Since 2001, World Dairy Expo’s Virtual Farm Tours have allowed producers to visit a variety of dairies from around the U.S. without leaving the Madison. The free tours will be presented daily, October 2 - 6 in the Mendota 1 meeting room in the Exhibition Hall. The man-agers will present a half-hour pictorial overview of their operation. The presen-tations will be available for viewing on World Dairy Expo’s website after the show. American Jersey Cattle Associa-tion, Kansas Department of Agriculture, Lely USA, Pioneer, PortaCheck, Inc., Quality Liquid Feeds, Inc., Semex and Stewart-Peterson, Inc. are sponsors of the 2012 Virtual Farm Tours. Tuesday, October 2, 2:00 p.m.VanEss Dairy LLC, Sanborn, IA3,800 Milking/Optimizing NutritionDuring the last 60 years, VanEss dairy has seen numerous changes; moving from Washington to Idaho, and then again from Idaho to Iowa in 2008. With each move, the dairy expanded. It is now home to 3,800 cows with a rolling herd average of 28,000 pounds. The farm has a relatively small land base of 260 till-able acres. Working closely with their nutritionist to maximize ration energy, they develop a fresh cow ration for the cows 25 days in milk or less and a sec-ond ration for all other lactating cows. Wednesday, October 3, NoonGolden Oaks Farm, Wauconda, IL720 Milking/Environmt’l StewardshipGolden Oaks Farm successfully utilizes a variety of technologies in order to be good stewards in a growing urban area while promoting the dairy industry. The farm was started in 1948 by the Crown Family of Chicago. Since then, the farm has grown to a 720 cow herd with a rolling herd average of 27,965 pounds. Located just 45 minutes from Chicago, Golden Oaks goes above and beyond to partner with their urban neighbors. They host an annual picnic for several thousand Crown friends and employees. In recent years, Golden Oaks recently

established Midwest Organic Recycling, a composting site that mixes farm and compost waste, turning it into compost. This vibrant business helps to provide the community with a positive percep-tion of dairy farming and its practices. Wednesday, October 3, 2:00 p.m.Martin Dairy LLC, Tillamook, OR1,011 Milking / Genomic Testing and Mating DecisionsIn 1995, Martin Dairy LLC moved with 80 Holsteins to Oregon growing to 400 cows--half Holsteins and half Jerseys. Within four years, the herd was entirely Jersey. Today Martin Dairy ranks third for herd average Jersey Performance In-dex™, has placed multiple bulls in A.I., and is home to 47 of the top 500 genom-ically evaluated Jersey females. Thursday, October 4, NoonUnited Pride Dairy LLC, Phillips, WI 1,800 Milking/ Financial Managem’tNearly 15 years ago, the Pesko and Ja-surda families combined their neighbor-ing dairies. United Pride Dairy is now home to 1,800 cows that are milked in a 60-cow rotary parlor and have a rolling herd average of 29,218 pounds. They use a disciplined approach to hedging feed and marketing milk, which has pro-tected their assets and helped them deal with fluctuating milk and feed prices. Thursday October 4, 2:00 p.m.Shamrock Farms, Stanfield, AZ 10,600 Milking/Unique MarketingShamrock Farms is one of the largest dairies in the Southwest. Since its be-ginnings in 1922, Shamrock had grown to become an industry leader in market-ing new and innovative products. The dairy is home to two different herds. The first is a 10,000 cow conventional herd with a rolling herd average of 24,000 pounds and the second is a 600 cow or-ganic dairy. Shamrock Farms processes and markets its own dairy products un-der Shamrock Dairy, a nationwide dairy products company. Shamrock is also the official milk provider for more than 20,000 SUBWAY® restaurants.

Friday, October 5, NoonDockendorf Dairy, Watkins, MN 130 Milking/AutomationIn the summer of 2011 Steve and Lori Dockendorf moved their cows into a cross-ventilation barn complete with waterbeds and robotic milkers. Cur-rently, the 130 cow herd, with a roll-ing herd average of 25,000 pounds, is milked by two robots. The cows are milked an average of three times a day. They also have an automatic feed push-er that pushes up feed on an hourly ba-sis, all day long. Friday, October 5, 2:00 p.m.McCarty Dairy, Rexford, KS7,200 Milking/ExpansionLike many other farm families, the Mc-Carty’s wanted to expand their dairy for the next generation. Originally from Pennsylvania, the McCarty’s faced a challenge of a limited land base avail-able. So, 13 years ago, the family moved its then 150 cow operation to Kansas. Today, McCarty Dairy is divided among three different dairy sites that are home to a 7,200 cow herd and also a 3500 head heifer facility. Recently, the dairy signed an exclusive contract to supply their milk to Dannon. They have com-pleted the construction of an on-farm processing facility that will enable them to supply Dannon with condensed skim milk and pasteurized cream. Saturday, October 6, NoonDellar Dairy, Harrisville, MI 235 Milking/Milk QualityMilk quality is a top priority for of Dellar Dairy. The 235 cow herd has a rolling herd average of 30,000 with a somatic cell count of just 43,000. To achieve these high marks, the Dellars have adopted strict management and milk procedures. Every milker is required to attend Michigan Milk Producer As-sociation’s Milking Training School, a day-long course that focuses on the fun-damentals of udder prep, udder health and milk let down. There are protocols for almost every aspect of the operation. In addition to a low somatic cell count, the dairy has less than a one percent in-cident of metabolic issues.
