LISD NewsletterTRANSCRIPT
National Hispanic Heritage Month Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic
Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by
celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of
American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain,
Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage
Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was
expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a
30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on
October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988,
on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the
anniversary of independence for Latin American
countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras
and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate
their independence days on September 16 and
September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día
de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day
period.

S2S Welcome
WELCOMING NEW STUDENTS TO STACEY Written by Matthew DelVecchio, 10th grader and s2s member
On August 23rd, Stacey’s Student2Student organization, led by Ms.
Nicholson and Mrs. Duron, held a welcome luncheon for new
students in grades 7th – 12th. Student2Student is a military-wide
support program that helps new students fit in and feel welcome
at their new schools. At the luncheon, Student2Student members
talked with the new students, gave tours, and introduced them to
teachers. The Lackland PTSO provided pizza and cake for the
new students to indulge in while getting used to their new school.
Students in Ms. Street’s 6th grade Getting Along Together class play the game “Grandmother’s Truck” where they had to
practice listening and concentration skills.
6th Grade Hands-On Grammar
Who says grammar skills have to come from a worksheet? Students in
Mrs. Torre’s Intervention/Enrichment class practice matching activities to
fine-tune their grammar skills! Ready, Set, It’s a Go For Grammar!!!

Let’s Get Along Students in Mrs. Allen’s class create a Conflict Web with yarn as they discuss
what makes them get upset. The first graders have been practicing getting along lessons in preparation for their Success For All reading classes, which will begin
on Monday. Lackland students participate in these lessons the first few weeks of school and really enjoy them!

ATTENTION ELEMENTARY PARENTS: The first lottery drawing for our LEGO club will be
held on Friday, September 7. 75 students will be chosen at random. If you DO NOT receive an e-mail with an attached
LEGO club schedule by the end of school on Monday, September 10, then your child was not selected. We will have
a second drawing in December. Please note that any student who is chosen in the first lottery will be removed from the December drawing to allow as many students as possible the chance to participate. Any student not chosen in the first
drawing will be automatically entered in the December lottery—there is no need to resubmit a form on behalf of your
child. If you have any questions as to whether or not your child was selected in our first lottery, please contact the front
office (357-5053).
Thank you for your support and understanding,
. Jill DiGiampaolo, LEGO club sponsor
