Exciting new online mathematics and reading resources are

available to students, parents, and teachers beginning August 24,

2012, and continuing to August 31, 2013.

The new TEA program entitled Texas Students Using Curriculum

Content to Ensure Sustained Success (Texas SUCCESS) provides

access to interactive math and reading programs for Texas public

school students in grades 3-8 under the Student Success Initiative

(SSI). The two interactive Math and Reading programs respectively

are:

• Think Through Math will provide the online interactive math

program which includes live bilingual tutors to engage and assist

students as they work to strengthen their math concepts.

• Istation will provide the online interactive reading program which

includes engaging, interactive content in a game-like format.

These online programs support students at all skill levels and,

more importantly, encourage and enable progress and

achievement as students move through the activities and

curriculum. Each program will assess individual students

according to his/her skill level and then automatically assign and

deliver appropriate curriculum tailored to that student's abilities.

Meaningful reporting tools available through both programs inform

teachers and parents when an intervention is needed or confirm

that the student is on the right path. With free 24/7 access to these

online adaptive programs at school and at home, teachers,

students and parents will be equipped with the necessary tools to

build confidence and promote academic success.

For additional information and to sign up for these resources,

visit www.texassuccess.org. To contact the SSI Support Center,

email [email protected] or call 877.315.4918 (toll free).

Continuum

The Continuum of Complex Questioning…Application!!!

Students in Mrs. Torre’s social studies class apply the Continuum of

Complex Questioning as they complete research points on three South

American countries: Argentina, Brazil, and Peru. What is the connection

between GDP and Economic Development? Are we able to make inferences

about Life Expectancy and Literacy Rates? How does a Service

Economy co-exist with a Manufacturing Economy? Are we able to make

inferences, analyze information, and make predictions based on the

available research? Depth, rigor, complexity, rigor, and specificity lead

to an increased understanding of our world and our place in it. If you

want to make change happen, you have to do the work!!!

s2s Ice Cream Social Was A Hit!!

Written by Kianna Pine, 7th grader and s2s member

The s2s Ice Cream Social was held on October 25th at 3:30pm in the cafeteria. The Ice Cream Social was

held to greet the new students of Stacey Jr./Sr. High. The s2s members and new students had a great time

eating vanilla ice cream while socializing and getting to know one another.

The new students were given the opportunity to create new friendships and settle into the new school

smoothly while enjoying their delicious ice cream. Events like these are important in helping the new

students transition easily into their new school.

Lackland ISD E-News Chess Tournament Page 4 of 11 www.lacklandisd.net Nov. 02, 2012

This past Saturday members of the LISD chess club participated in its first chess tournament at Harmony Hills Elementary School against 120 kids from all over the city. Competition was tough as some of the best players vied for top honors. Many of our kids came close but fell just short of the medals and trophies. A good time and great

learning experience was had by all.

LES Library Supports TEKS??? Elementary students have been Busy as Bees in the Lackland Library. The first weeks of

instruction have entailed learning about library organization and the Dewey Decimal System. With an overview of the different genres, literary elements, text classification

and purpose, the Library is supporting classroom TEKS. Did you know that learning to locate a Call Number such as 398.2 or 796.4 supports Math

Skills? Who knew that Melvil Dewey had teaching math in mind when he developed the library classification system in 1876! Students eagerly practiced “shelving” with

decimals and learned the importance of alphabetizing
