Do Something Amazing 5K

A Huge Success!

The morning of April 14th, 1,329 participants including,

Lackland ISD staff, students, parents, and the LAFB training squadrons ran or walked the 3.1 mile 5K

course.

An additional 61 volunteers, including Lackland ISD students, employees and LAFB basic trainees arrived at

0530 to begin preparation for the 3.1mile race. The volunteers cut cases of bananas and oranges, filled

water coolers, and mixed Gatorade. More volunteers were placed as road guards and water stations along the

route.

All participants crossed the finish line by 10 a.m. and awards were given for each age category. The female overall winner was Edith Davis. And, the male overall

winner was Michael Davenport.

The highly successful event raised close to $9000 after all expenses. A majority of the funds will go to the

LAFB Fisher House and a portion will be given to Lackland ISD senior high students in scholarships. The presentation of funds for the LAFB Fisher House will be

during the May 22nd Lackland ISD board meeting.

Stacey UIL: On to State! by: Ahmawan Johnson, senior

The Stacey UIL science and computer science teams competed at the Regional UIL Academic meet last Friday, April 20th in Brenham. The science team, consisting of

Ahmawan Johnson, Tatiana Tway, and Benson Sam, made their coach, Mrs. Jackson, proud. In a test consisting of biology, chemistry, and physics, the team

placed fourth overall. As individuals, Tatiana Tway placed 5th overall, and earned 2nd place in Biology. Ahmawan Johnson placed 1st in biology, and will go on to compete in the state meet in Austin on May 22. Tatiana will also compete as an alternate. Tatiana and Ahmawan will be the first Stacey students to go to the

state UIL meet since 2009.

Although the computer science team, consisting of David Lipsey and Ahmawan Johnson, did not place, they exerted an admirable effort. David Lipsey scored 8th out of 36 contestants. Overall, both teams had fun; Tatiana and Ahmawan were glad to have had the opportunity to compete in UIL in their senior year, and are

eager for the state meet. David Lipsey and Benson Sam both look forward to competing in next year’s competition.

Ms. Motz loved all of the GREAT Book Club presentations her SFA class had

to offer. Some students brought props and all students had wonderfully

illustrated pictures depicting important information gathered from their

expository books!

Kristian and Levi enjoy practicing their addition

facts with “Addition Snap” and playing cards. The

game helps students develop their mathematical

fluency having fun at the same time. Caidance and

Lillyan are also working hard also! Good Job Kids!

“Fluency” of the math facts. They

The 3 E’s Grant

Lackland ISD has been awarded a grant to help educate our students about nutrition

education. Next year the Stacey High School Family and Community Service class is going

to present lessons and videos on healthy nutrition. The topics that will be covered are:

My Plate Education, Healthy Snacks, Eat This Not That, and Exercise…for the Fun of it.

With the help of the high school class, Lackland Elementary students will have the

opportunity to prepare some healthy recipes and eat the product.

High school students will also create videos on healthy eating tips and cooking

demonstrations that will be shown on the Eagle Eye News. Current child development

students sampled some healthy recipes to prepare for next year. One included a smoothie

with spinach as an ingredient….and they like it.

3 E’s Grant

The Lackland PE department would like to

thank the Lackland PTSO and Mrs. Forsgren,

for using the Labels for Education points to

get us a brand new air pump. Our old pump

was on its last valve and was at least 12yrs

old. This brand new pump will surely come

in handy as it also has the capability to also

inflate beach balls and other types of

inflatables. Thanks again to our PTSO.

On April 12th and 13

th, 7

th and 8

th graders were visited by Major Blankson, MD.,

Lieutenant Edwardsen, RN., Major Thompson, MD., and Captain Valverde, RD. They

gave an excellent presentation on eating disorders, nutrition, and more.

First students learned what eating disorders were, the effects of them, and the warning

signals of eating disorders. The presenters also gave a short section on proper

nutrition. Students walked away from this with new insight into their health, both

mental and physical.

1. When are you from?

I was born in Panama.

2. How long have you worked in the cafeteria?

I have worked in the cafeteria for 21 years.

3. What do you like about working in the cafeteria?

I like to cook, and seeing the students coming through.

4. Do you have a family?

Yes, I have two daughters, one is an electrician, and the other does physical therapy.

5. Do you like the food that you cook?

Yes!

6. Do you like to cook? If so, what kinds of foods?

I like to cook all kinds, Italian, Mexican, and American.

7. What's your favorite hobby?

I like to bake wedding cakes.

8. What kind of music do you listen to?

Panamanian salsa music.

9. Is there anything else you would like to add?

Well, I would like to see the students eat more nutritional foods, and eat healthier

instead of eating junk food all the time.

IN JUST SIX WORDS…Recently Ms. Robinette’s third grade

library students had fun creating 6 word “stories” about the library. For most,

it was a challenge to think about library classes and activities, and then to

condense those thoughts into just 6 words. Results were mixed, but some

students came up with fabulous stories. (Some of the adjectives were

somewhat dubious, but it was all in fun.)

1) The Library is prehistoric, magical, amazing.

2) Library life dreams imagine think joy.

3) Books are fun of dynamite words.

Hey! Have you read any good books lately? Spread the word to your friends and share the title! Do you

like books about dogs? How about books from a dog’s perspective?

Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein is a good read, geared toward upper elementary / middle school-

aged students.

A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron may interest upper elementary / middle school-aged

students, too

Sheep by Valerie Hobbs has a sad twist to it, on the level of middle to upper elementary-aged

students.

Not looking for a book about / from the eyes of a dog? Try Patricia Polacco, who has written many

realistic and historical fiction, as well as autobiographical stories of her life. These stories are well-suited

for 2nd / 3rd grade readers.

Mrs. Katz and Tush is about a neighbor who becomes an unexpected life-long friend. (Ok, there’s a

cat in this one!)

Some Birthday! has a surprise twist at the end – would your parent do what Patricia Polacco’s

father did?

My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother tells about sibling rivalry that finally has a resolution of sorts.

Pink and Say is set during the Civil War and may open up a good discussion or thought process about

what life may have been like then.

The Butterfly, set during WWII in France is a story of hope and courage. Did you know papillon

(pap ee YON) is French for “butterfly?”

The Keeping Quilt tells how Patricia Polacco’s family kept a tradition going for many years. Could

you start one with your family?

Thunder Cake will show you a creative way to quell your fear of thunder storms. There’s even a

yummy recipe at the end!

Reading can be **you alone with a book** or it could be **you and a friend discussing “the latest”** or it

could be **a family fun time instead of TV.**

Whatever you do, why not read a good book and then share it with a friend? You’ll be glad you did.

Mayor's Fitness Council

Student Ambassador Program Application

The Mayor’s Fitness Council is looking for role models, leaders, idea creators, and change makers to empower

their schools, friends, and families to get healthy!

The mission of the Mayor's Fitness Council Student Ambassador Program is to involve the San Antonio youth

in Mayor Castro's initiative to improve the health of San Antonio.

Applicants who serve as Student Ambassadors must be in grades 5th

-12th during the 2012-2013 academic year

and attend a school in Bexar County. Student Ambassadors must be able to maintain passing academic scores

in all subject areas in order to serve this one-year term.

Expectations of Student Ambassadors

Attend an information session in June 2012;

Participate in 5 conference calls between October 2012 - April 2013;

Dream It. Participate in a dreaming session to identify your dream for a healthier school campus in

September 2012;

Map It. Take part in a discovery checklist of your school campus related to physical activity and

nutrition in November 2012;

Do It. Implement at least one strategy to improve nutrition and physical activity on your school

campus by April 2013;

Provide monthly progress reports on implementing a strategy on your school campus; and

Participate in the coordination of a City Wide Youth Summit to be held in May 2013.

Selection Process

Application must be postmarked or emailed by May 11, 2012. The Mayor's Fitness Council Healthy

Schools Committee will select approximately 35 students for the 2012-2013 Student Ambassador Program.

Applicant selection is based on 1) quality of completed application, 2) recommendation, and 3) representation

from various school districts. The 2012-2013 Mayor's Fitness Council Student Ambassadors will be notified

by June 2012.
