Domenico Ghirlandaio - Preaching of St John the Baptist

Fr. Joe’s Journal El Diario del Padre Joe We continue the season of Advent: a time of preparation. The season challenges us to examine how we live. Our lives are a gift from God. This Monday we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the pa-troness of the Americas at the 7 pm mass. This week we continue to ask all our pa-rishioners to help "To Teach Who Christ Is” effort. Last weekend we received 21 more pledges that has brought us to nearly $200, 000. I thank all who have given pledges and those working on the campaign. I know the sacrifice many of you have made. We continue to open the possibility of making a five year pledge to all of the parish this weekend. A gift of only $5 dollars a week over the five years would bring in $1,300, of $20 would bring in $ 7,200 and $50 a week $13,000. I ask even if you can not give at this time to fill out a pledge card. Please pray about what you can give to support this effort to help the parish and Archdiocese. The archdiocese has asked all parishes to do this campaign. We have begun to look forward to the “Renew My Church” process. It calls us to evangelize the whole community and to make disciples who will do the work of the Lord. We need your help in managing the parish calendar. To best serve our parish we need to know when our parish organizations and groups plan on having their activities. Please notify the rectory when planning an event and be considerate of the needs of your fellow par-ish organizations. We will be implementing a new sys-tem in the coming year. We also will monitor the fund-raisers that go on in the parish. In the Archdiocese fund-raisers held in the parish should usually benefit the parish or archdiocesan activities. This is especially important at this moment in the archdiocese. Other fundraising events should be approved by the finance committee. We request that you let us know about hospital stays. Hospitals because of legal require-ments do not notify us about parishioners who are in the hospital. Please let us know if you or a loved are in the hospital. We offer prayers for all those in need. We pray for those who are ill, recovering from surgery, shut-in or are in nursing homes. Patience! We have had to replace our com-puters. Our old computers no longer worked so we needed new ones. We are still figuring out our new com-puters and this has effected many things including our bulletin printing. Once again thank you for your patience. See this bulletin for other key articles and event announcements.

God bless you, your pastor, Fr. Joe

Paciencia! Hemos remplazado nuestras computadoras. Nuestras computadoras viejas no funcionaban, necesitábamos nuevas.

Visits from our sharing parish The past two Fridays students from St. Jo-seph School in Wilmette have come to work in the food pantry. The students are eighth graders and preparing for Confirmation next Spring. They worked with their teacher to conduct a food drive for our food pantry. Along with parents they delivered the donations and then stayed to work. They met our clients and helped them shop, the sorted the food that they collected along with other various tasks. Most had never worked in a food pantry. At the end of the day they commented that the families coming to the pantry were just like them! We have partnered with St. Joseph for over 15 years. There students are al-ways very respectful, well behaved and hard work-ing. We are grateful for the continued support of the school and parish.

Thank you to all who contributed to the Giv-ing Tree this year. This past week Catholic Charities picked up close to 80 toys. These toys will be dis-tributed to families in various programs run by Cath-olic Charities.

NCA Students Make Star Quilts as Symbol of Gratitude During NCA’s Thanksgiving mass, students unveiled the special Star Quilts they made for Primary School (PreK-4) and Middle School (5-8) Campuses. The Star Quilt comes from the Native American Lakota tribe and symbolizes their gathering into one people. All the students at NCA helped to make these quilts by giving a diamond shape of thankfulness, which second-grade teacher Gail Smith then formed into the beautiful Star Quilts. It’s a powerful reminder that when we are focused on gratitude, each of us glows with the light of Jesus. With thankful hearts our en-tire school community glows, and we are indeed a brilliant light in the world, like a star. At NCA, it is our mission to educate the whole child: intellectually, socially, emotionally, spiritually and physically. Our program grows out of our Catholic faith, which guides everything we do at NCA. These beautiful Star Quilts are a daily reminder to focus on what re-ally matters and to live our lives with grateful hearts. As we begin this season of Advent and prepare for the birth of Jesus, may you all be inspired to fill your own hearts and actions with gratitude and love.

A SEASON OF HOPE Today we can bask in the imagery that the Mass readings offer us. In particular, Isaiah’s vision of a parched land that blooms with abundant flowers holds a message for each of us. Too often we are just like that parched land. We can allow ourselves to become absorbed in the waves of consumerism that grip so many. We look for fulfillment in the things that money can buy. Unfortunately, this leaves us like parched land, thirsting for something that money can’t buy. This holy season has much to offer to quench our thirsts. In a word, this season offers hope. We are told that those who are ransomed by God will know joy and gladness. For them, sorrow and mourning will be no more. Let us place our hope in these promises. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Kilgen Organ Restoration Perhaps you may have noticed that I have not used the organ very often for Mass this fall. That is because a significant portion of it has been silent well I have been restoring part of the mechanism. This past week I finished 3 out of 6 parts which I plan to restore. These parts have hundreds of leather valves which need to be replaced. I will finish the other 3 after Christ-mas. The organ is already playing much more reliably now that these are reinstalled.
