NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS JANUARY 24, 2016 From the Deacon Sometimes, the Scripture readings that we hear on Sunday can simply go by us unnoticed. The words read from the pulpit have little or no impact on our lives. It could be that our minds are preoccupied or worried about something else. We may be distracted and have a hard time focusing on what we have heard or its implications for living our lives. But the words of Scripture can have a meaningful impact on us if we let them. This was the case of the returning Israelites we heard about in today’s first reading. Returning to their homeland after seventy years of exile, what the people saw was only devastation before them. Their homes were gone, the city walls lay in ruin, the glorious temple of King Solomon was completely destroyed. Nehemiah would help the people with the re-building. Ezra the priest would instruct the people on what God expected of them as they went forward. Ezra, the priest, began to read to them from the words of Scripture. They heard again anew how God had chosen them and delivered their ancestors from bondage. The people realized how through their unfaithfulness to God’s covenant with them, it had led to their destruction. They began to weep in sorrow for their earlier actions. As a people now repentant and determined to live out the covenant with God, they were told to rejoice and celebrate God’s great love for them. Their story is very much like our own. We too have been chosen by God to be his adopted children through the waters of baptism. Like the people of the exile, we sometimes may drift away from following God’s plan for us. We choose to follow our own paths. But the words we hear proclaimed from the Bible each time we attend Mass are meant to bring us back to God. They are there to challenge and comfort us. They help us to renew our commitment to follow Christ and live as God would have us live. We may not openly weep upon hearing these words as the people of the exile did, but we can be changed by what we hear. We, like Christ, have been anointed by the Spirit. Like Jesus, we are called to bring good tidings to the poor. The life we are given is meant not only to serve self but others as well…those most in need. Christian living is about following God’s ways and not our own. Let us listen more intently to His words for us. May we open our hearts to allow the His words to change us from within. He is speaking to each one of us today from Scripture. How will we respond? NOTRE DAME CHURCHHOUSTON, TEXAS JANUARY 24, 2016

From the DeaconSometimes, the Scripture readings that we hear on Sunday can simply go by us unnoticed.

Adrian Alberto Herrera
