The Outdoor Unit (Boiler)

The Control Box (MIM Box)

It is important to situate the unit within an open area with a good airflow, it is a good idea to choose a location that is not going to be blocked by plants, animals or anything else that may obstruct the airflow.

Another factor to take into account is the mounting surface, make sure it is a flat, solid surface capable of withstanding the weight of the heat pump. The unit will need to be mounted at least 100mm off the ground using the rubber feet supplied with the kit.

The unit must be positioned so that the condensate can be adequately drained off as it can produce up to 6 L per hour.

300mm at the back of the unit300mm at the left hand side of the unit600mm on the right hand side of the unit to allow access behind the service panel1500mm from the front of the unit

The control box is not designed for outdoor use and must be installed indoors.

The items that are included with the control box are as follows;

• Controller

• Flow Switch

• Blue Cylinder Sensor

• Two Red Sensors

• Black Cable for Smart Grid Connection

• Cables for backup heater

The control kit will need to be installed within 15 metres from the domestic hot water cylinder and no more that 100 metres from the outdoor unit and as close as possible to the rest of the components i.e. the pump(s) and 2 port valves etc…

Flexible hosesThe flow and return connections of the back of the heat pump are 1” BSP male and we would recommend connecting the water pipework with the flexi hoses. This is to help reduce and vibration from the unit travelling back into the house and also allows for ease of maintenance.

All external pipework Must be installed to meet MCS guidelines

Mounting FeetThe unit needs to be mounted 100mm above ground, the best way to do this is to use the flexi foot pair supplied in our kit, these come with the mounting bolts as standard.

Expansion vessel, pressure gauge, pressure relief valve & filling loopIn pressurised heating systems, most heating engineers decide to use a Robokit. This combines all of these components into one handy box. The expansion vessel would be sized exactly as it would for a boiler. If the system requires the need to be run as an open vented system then the components listed above will not be needed, Samsung units can run anywhere between 0-3 bar pressure.

PumpThe circulation pump on the Samsung system will need to provide a minimum flow rate in order for the unit to perform correctly.

The units need to have the following flow rates;

• 5 kW - 12 L/min

• 9 kW - 20 L/min

• 16 kW - 30 L/min

The static resistance through the units are;

• 5 kW - 10 kPa

• 9 kW - 10 kPa

• 16kW - 15 kPa

• Flow meter - 5 kPa

• Cylinders ~ 5 kPa

The best way to overcome the pressure and to achieve the minimum flow rates would be to use one circulation pump size accordingly to the system.

Flow switch and flow meterHeat pumps have to have a continuous flow rate at all times during operation, to check and measure that the flow rate is correct the flow switch that is supplied with the control kit needs to be positioned on the primary return to the heat pump. If for any reason the flow of the system does not engage the paddle within the flow switch an E911 error will appear.

E911The E911 fault will appear if the flow rate of the system is below 16 L/m for the 9 kW upwards and 6 L/m for the 5 kW. To avoid this fault, a hydraulic separator can be used to split the system. The flow switch is included within the control kit, this has to be installed with at least 150mm of straight pipe on either side and can be positioned horizontally or vertically. The connections are 1” BSP female and the wire is 2 metres long and will need to connect into the MIM board. The wire can be extended if needed using the same quality of cable. The flow switch can be installed with the flow meter, it is recommended that it is installed into the flow side of the flow meter. Adapters will be needed to do so and will come as part of the Solfex kit. The flow switch will need to be installed indoors as it is not outdoor (IP65) rated.

Diverter ValvesTo be able to operate the unit correctly, the system will need to be hydraulically set up so that the heating and hot water are heated individually. This can be done with two diverter valves, one for hot water and one for heating. These will be included within the heat pump kit.

Magnetic Dirt Filter & Filter BallTo reduce the chances of any blockages within the heat pump and to remove any unwanted objects, a dirt filter will need to be installed. Solfex have taken the extra step of including a filterball into the system for extra protection. If the filters are not installed this could void the warranty of the unit.

Glycol - Tyfocor LMonobloc heat pumps are installed outdoors meaning that there is always going to be some pipework outside. The unit has it’s own defrost function to prevent it freezing up, however, if there is a power issue then the risk of the unit freezing rises considerably. To prevent this, glycol will need to be introduced into the system, it is important to measure the concentration to make sure that the mixture is enough to protect the unit. If the unit freezes then this will void the warranty.

A mixture of 25% is normally recommended to protect down to -10.7% for Tyfocor L. If too much glycol is added to the system then this can cause issues as it will require more power from the pump and will also have a negative effect on the capacity of the unit. It is always best to mix the glycol before introducing it into the system, this way you will avoid inconsistencies in the viscosity of the fluid.

Hydraulic SeparatorsIn the past all heat pumps were single speed, this meant that a buffer tank was required as it allowed the unit to operate for longer periods of time before having to switch back off again. In low load conditions this would prove to be a bad situation as the unit would need to continuously switch itself on and off again, i.e. short cycling. The introduction of an inverter driven compressor removed this requirement. However a hydraulic separator is now used for other things within the system.

Modulation and InvertersThe introduction of inverter driven units with variable speeds meant that the buffer vessel is no longer a requirement for a heat pump system. The heat pump changes the speed of the compressor to alter the output of the heat pump, much like adjusting the gas in a boiler.Samsung’s units can alter their output down to as low as 10% and has removed the cycling process.

DefrostIn cold and wet weather, the outdoor unit can start to freeze up causing a sheet of ice to form on the fin coils at the back and side of the unit.In conditions below -2°C, the coils are less likely to freeze as there is less water in the air. If a coil was to be blocked by the ice then the unit will need to run in defrost mode. To do this it reverses the operation of the unit by using the heat from the system to heat the coils. The effect of this is that it will start to take heat from the dhw or heating system and the temperature will start to decrease.

In worst case scenarios, the unit can enter the defrost mode for around 6 minutes every hour.

After the defrost process has complete, all of the ice will have been melted from the back of the heat pump and pour out into the drain off system. Every time water is put through the unit it will lose up to 5°C, the flow rate will be at 20 L/m. This means that if the system volume is considerably small then the temperature can drop dramatically. An example of this would be if there was around 20 litres within the system all of the fluid will circulate through the unit 6 times in 6 minutes and this will cause a 30°C drop in temperature. This is where a volumiser or a buffer tank can come in handy as this will increase the volume of fluid and also the heat will be taken from the store rather than the property.

FlowUnlike common heating systems, a heat pump system needs to keep the water flow through the unit at a constant speed. To make sure the flow is balanced through the emitters and the heat pump, a hydraulic separator will need to be introduced into the system. This can be done in a few ways;

Low Loss Headers are a common way to achieve a balanced system. They are a large section of pipe with 4 or more connections, a flow and return for the heat pump and separate flow and returns for the heating circuit. If the flow rate on either side does not match then the water will flow through the volume within the header to make up the difference.

Buffer tanks, are also another way to achieve a balanced system. Buffer tanks are basically a small cylinder, however the fluid flows directly through the buffer as there are no coils. This is very much like the low loss header, only much larger in size.

Plate heat exchangers, like low loss headers tend to have four connections making up the flow and return for the heat pump and the heating system. However, unlike the low loss, a plate heat exchanger separates the glycol fluid running through the heat pump and the heating circuit via plates within the exchanger. These systems tend to be referred to as a reduced glycol setup, as you can reduce the amount of antifreeze within the system.

Micro BoreIf the heat pump was directly connected to microbore pipe, it can prove to be very noisy and will sound like a running tap. In order to avoid this, a hydraulic separator can be used, with this it it possible to have separate flow rates, one for the heat pump and one for the micro bore. Radiators will need to be sized accordingly to use 50°C in and 40°C out, so an average of 45°C.

DHW CylinderHeat pumps are capable of providing heat to hot water cylinders as well as heating radiators or underfloor. In order to do so you will need a heat pump cylinder, this means that it will have a larger surface area coil than normal at 2.5m² to around 3m² for larger cylinders, either pressurised or open vented. The cylinder will need to be installed within 15 meters from the MIM board as the sensor cable is only 15 meters long. The cylinder installation instructions will be provided with the cylinder. The cylinder is usually based on 55 litres per person per day and it is recommended that a 1 hour reheat time is aimed for.

Do not attempt to use a standard non-heat pump cylinder as this will not work.

The legionella function will be programmed into the Samsung controller to run once every week along with a daily function to ensure that the hot water is always up to temperature.

It is also possible to combine a solar PV powered immersion heater.

Fast Connect

The fast connect board includes everything that you will need except from the robokit and the cylinder. The fast connect board is a relatively new concept and was designed to make installers lives much easier. The board is pre-wired and commissioned, the installer just needs to connect the cylinder, heating circuit and the heat pump flow and returns to the board. There is also some minor electrical work to be undertaken and then everything is ready to go.

The operation of the fast connect board is as normal, the cylinder sensor controls the operation of DHW mode and the external run signal into the MIM board controls the unit running in heating mode and there are no limits on how many zones are connected. The zones are independently controlled by it’s own stat or timer of which drives a zone valve. This will control the pump and then send a signal to the unit to operate. The Samsung heat pump will adjust accordingly in a fully adjustable weather compensation mode and it will adjust the temperature of the water to match the ambient temperature.

OperationHot water is controlled using the Samsung cylinder sensor and controller supplied. This controller has inbuilt time clock control and includes both a daily and weekly legionella sterilisation function. The system can be either open vented or pressurised.

• The cylinder must have a coil at least 2.5m2

• Cylinder size normally allows 55l of water per person per day.

• We would recommend sizing the heat pump to recover the cylinder in 1 hour.

• It is possible to connect this system to solar PV powered immersion heaters (I boost, Immersun etc.)

Heating is controlled using a wall mounted thermostat / time clock (field supplied).

• There are no limits to the number of heating zones which can be connected to this system. This system shows 2 heating zones. (Pump 2 and Pump 3)

• Each zone has its own thermostat / timer which drives a dedicated zone valve. The zone valve will control the pump and send a run signal to the heat pump.

• The system will run in a fully adjustable weather compensated mode adjusting the water temperature to suit the ambient conditions.

• We recommend a buffer; low loss header or heat exchanger is used to simplify the installation.

Reduced Glycol SystemIf the amount of glycol in the system is an issue and you want to reduce the amount then this can be done with a plate heat exchanger. This will need to be correctly sized for the duty and the flow and return temperatures of the system. Two circulation pumps will also be needed for this setup with one on each side.

Operation

• The temperature of the hot water is controlled with the cylinder sensor and the supplied controller.

• The controller has a built in time clock control and has both daily and weekly sterilisation functions for legionella.

• The system is able to be setup as open vented or pressurised.

• The coil within the cylinder must be designed for use with a heat pump with a surface area of at least 2.5 m².

• A guideline for sizing the cylinder would allow 55 litres of water per person each day.

• It is recommended that the heat pump is sized so that it is able to reheat the cylinder within an hour.

• As with most cylinders, it is possible to connect a PV system to the immersion heaters to reduce costs. A battery storage system is also a great way to help with this.

• The heating system is controlled via a thermostat / time clock that is wired back to the internal control board (MIM).

• There is not a limitation to the number of heating zones that can be connected to this setup.

• This setup shows two heating zones with pumps two and three.

• Each heating zone will be controlled by its own thermostat or timer, this will operate it’s own zone valve which will then control the pump. This in turn will create the run signal for the heat pump to operate in heating mode.

• Whilst the heat pump is running, it will be constantly adjusting the water temperature to suit the ambient temperatures and conditions. This is the weather compensation of the unit.

• The use of a hydraulic separator is recommended as this will help to make the installation and commissioning a lot smoother.

Multiple Heat Pumps

For a system that has more than one heat pump, each unit will need it’s own flow and return, this is easily done by using a hydraulic separator i.e. a buffer, header or with two heat exchangers.

OperationThe temperature of the hot water is controlled with the cylinder sensor and the supplied controller.

Combi Hybrids

OperationIn a combi hybrid system, the domestic hot water is heated by the combi boiler and is not heated by the heat pump.

• The heating system is controlled via a thermostat / time clock, the run signal is sent to the heating controls to operate the boiler.

• Whilst the heat pump is running, it will be constantly adjusting the water temperature to suit the ambient temperatures and conditions. This is the weather compensation of the unit.

• The heat pump will operate on a changeover temperature, this is where the heat pump will stop and a run signal is sent to the boiler to take over. An example of this would be 4°C and this would be when the heat pump’s output is lower than the required heat input to the dwelling.

• The heat pump operates when the ambient temperature rises above 5°C and resumes normal operation.

• The renewable heat incentive (RHI) will be based on the heat provided by the heat pump only, a heat meter is needed to monitor the input.

A combi hybrid system is were a heat pump and a combi boiler is utilised on the same system. The heat pump is used only to provide space heating and cannot be used for DHW.

In a combi hybrid system the heat pump and boiler will NEVER provide space heating at the same time.

Heating Only Hybrids

A heating only hybrid system is a combination of a fossil fuel boiler and a heat pump.In a hybrid system the heat pump only provides heating and cannot heat the domestic hot water. The boiler and heat pump will never operate at the same time.

OperationAs the domestic hot water is only heated by the boiler, the old/existing boiler can still be used.

• The heating system is controlled via a thermostat / time clock, the run signal is sent to the heating controls to operate the boiler.

• Whilst the heat pump is running, it will be constantly adjusting the water temperature to suit the ambient temperatures and conditions. This is the weather compensation of the unit.

• There will need to be a changeover temperature (heat pump to boiler), for example 3°C.

• When/if the ambient temperature falls below the programmed set point, a run signal is sent to the boiler to activate, the boiler symbol will show and the operation of the heat pump will stop.

• When the outside temperature rises back above 5°C, the boiler will stop and the heat pump will take over.

• In this setup, the RHI will be calculated and paid dependant on the heat provided by the heat pump only, this will require a heat meter.

23

Wiring & Power Supply Information

PowerThe system needs 2 power supplies:

The first is the outdoor unit;

• 5kW - 20 Amp

• 9kW - 25 Amp

• 12kW - 30 Amp

• 16kW - 32 Amp

The second is the control/MIM box, this will be a 16Amp supply. This wires into the top of the MCB in the box. Some people remove the MCB from the control box as there is already one in the distribution board. If this is done, wire the live to L1 and neutral to N2.

Immersion Heater The immersion heater is powered via the control (MIM) box and is connected to the terminals A3 (Live) and A4 (Neutral). If a fused spur is used it must be labeled so that it is not switched off as this will cause the system to go into a fault.

Communication CableThe comms cable is used to connect the indoor control box to the outdoor unit. The outdoor unit terminals F1 & F2 connect to the terminals in the control box labelled F1 & F2. To create the signal without issues you should use a 2 core flex 0.5-1mm cable without and breaks or switches.

Remote controllerThe Samsung control is usually installed in close proximity to the control box and is mostly used for commissioning purposes. To connect this to the control board you will need a 2 core 0.50.75 mm 2 core flex that connects to F3 & F4 in the controller to F3 & F4 on the control board and must be no further than 100m.

Page 24: SAMSUNG EHS - Solfex energy systems · SAMSUNG EHS Air Source Heat Pump Installation Guide AE050JXYDEH/EU AE090JXYDEH/EU ... 35 - Commissioning & Maintenance Sheet 36 - Maintenance

24

What comes with the unit?

The first thing that you will see when you open the box (unless you open it upside down) should be the sensor cables. The blue sensor cable is used to measure the temperature inside the cylinder and connects into a yellow socket on the control board labelled CNS042. The sensor should be located in the top half of the cylinder above the immersion heater. The sensor must also be situated so that it cannot be easily pulled out of the tapping and so that it is not near any mains cables.

The other cables you will see are two red ones. The red cable with the black plug is only used on multiple unit systems with a master and a slave. This sensor measures the temperature to avoid any excessive temperatures. This cable is connected to the master unit and should be positioned so that it measures the flow temperature into the hydraulic separator. The socket that this cable plugs into is black and is labelled as CNS047 on the control board. The other red cable with the blue plug can be discarded as it is not used. The black cable with the red plug can also be discarded as this is also not used.

The other three red white and brown cables are used in systems with a backup heater or master slave systems see page 11. These are used to send the run signal from the master over to the slave when needed.

Using two port valvesThe two port valve for the cylinder (DHW), B17 is Brown, B15 is Blue and the rest are not needed or used. The two port valve for heating is B18 Live and B15 Neutral.

The heating is controlled with a field supplied stat, time clock or from an underfloor wiring centre or manifold. On the control board, B20 is permanently live (240V AC), the signal is returned back to B22.

When using multi zone heating systemsWhen the call for heat is made from a stat it will in turn operate the zone valve, in the zone valves a switch links to orange to the grey wire, the grey is connected to B20 (permanent live) and the orange to B22 (run signal). This sequence will open the valves and send a run signal to the heat pump to start up.

After each run of the unit, the pump will continue to run for a minute to continue to circulate the heat out of the outdoor unit. The hot water heating is not affected and the DHW will still take priority.

PumpThe circulation pump will need to be wired to the control board and should be as follows; B8 is Live, B7 is Neutral. If two pumps are required then wire both the same terminals. The maximum power for this is 500W.

25

Start-Up Procedure

Before connecting the heat pump to the system, a thorough system flush is highly recommended in line with the Building Regulations for England and Wales, Part L, 2006.Using a power flusher, fill the system with a mixture of water and 25-30% glycol, there is no pressure sensor in the unit so it can operate from open vented to 3 bar max.

Setting up the cylinder immersion heaterThe immersion heater will have it’s own temperature stat and this must be set to 70°C. This is to make sure that the legionella function can reach the required temperature and complete it’s weekly cycle.

Powering UpBefore applying power to the indoor and outdoor units, make sure that all the room stats and any other run signals are off.The sequence of power should be the indoor unit and then the outdoor within a few seconds of each other. On the first startup, the controller will not show any signs of life, after this the controller will light up and start. When the controller first starts, you should see 01 on the screen, this will show for 90 seconds. If 01 continues to show then the outdoor unit is not powered up.

29

Checking flow rate before starting the heat pumpThe flow rate through the system is high and must maintain this at all times. If the flow rate drops to low E911 will show on the screen. If there is a separator in the system i.e a buffer, the flow rate is much easier to achieve and maintain. If there is not a separator then there will need to be extra tests carried out.

Testing the flow in heating modeTo test the flow rate, enter the test mode by pressing the right and left buttons for 6 seconds until TEST or 7E57 appears and turn the pump on with the power on/off button. Whilst the pump is running you will see the symbol of the house with the circle around it appear. The unit will be running as though it was in heating mode, check the flow rate. This should be 12 L/min for the 5kW, 20L/min for the 9kW and 30L/min on the 16kW.If there is insufficient flow rate then the unit will never operate.

As you look at the flow meter you will be able to see the flow rate in litres per minute, the flow rate is the lower figure and not the higher.

If the flow rate in the system is not high enough then this will need attending to before continuing. Make sure that all circulation pumps are powered, remove all air. If this doesn’t cure the issue then there is something either not right with the system or you need a bigger pump(s).

The unit won’t start if the flow rate is not high enough, once this has been rectified in heating mode then it’s time to test in hot water mode. Press the set button to close the heating valve, 2-1 will appear on screen. Manually open the hot water valve with the lever and lock it, now check the flow rate through the cylinder coil. This should be 12 L/min for the 5kW, 20L/min for the 9kW and 30L/min on the 16kW.

As with heating, if there is not enough flow through the system then the unit will never start up.

To escape from this menu, press the ESC button.

Flow Test: if you don’t have a header, heat exchanger or buffer. Setting up the bypass valve If there is no separator in the system then you will most likely have a bypass.

To set up the bypass you will need to follow the below;

In heating mode close every TRV on all radiators and shut off all/any UFH loops, this will imitate the worst case scenario for the flow in the system. The bypass valve will need to be adjusted to suit the required flow rates for each unit to avoid any faults, this should be 12 L/min for the 5kW, 20L/min for the 9kW and 30L/min on the 16kW.Adjust the bypass valve so that the above flow rated are achieved, now open up all the TRV valves and reopen and closed UFH loops, then exit the service mode by pressing ESC.

30

Starting the unit in heating mode

If you press the power button in the top left of the controller, AU will appear. This means that the system is now in automatic mode and is using the external run signal. To send a run signal for heating, turn up the room stats, the circulation pump should start immediately and the symbol of a house with a circle around it will appear. The compressor will start after 3 minutes

After the compressor starts the pipework will begin to heat up and you will be able to check the flow temperature by using the Samsung controller. Press the oval view button, by doing so you will see 4 different sensor temperatures;

The house symbol is the temperature at the Samsung controller, however this is not used. The house with the circle around it is the flow water temperature at the heat pump. The pine tree is the temperature outside at the back of the heat pump. The tap symbol is the hot water temperature inside the cylinder.

The flow temperature that is shown by the house within a circle will increase over time and in turn this will start to heat up the heating circuits. You can check this by feeling the radiators or checking the temperature of the underfloor heating loops.

If the compressor doesn’t start after 5 minutes then you will need to check a few things;

If the fluid running through the heat pump is below 10°C then the compressor will not fire up.By pressing the oval view button you will be able to see the 4 sensors, press the oval view until the house within a circle appears, this is the temperature of the water. If this is below 10°C then the unit will not start up, however, the circulation pump will still run.

To warm up the water within the system you will need to run the system in hot water mode. To do this, enter test mode and warm up the cylinder by turning on the immersion heater. After the cylinder has been heated up, manually open the hot water valve to circulate the heated fluid from the cylinder.

Page 31: SAMSUNG EHS - Solfex energy systems · SAMSUNG EHS Air Source Heat Pump Installation Guide AE050JXYDEH/EU AE090JXYDEH/EU ... 35 - Commissioning & Maintenance Sheet 36 - Maintenance

31

Starting the unit in hot water mode

To start the unit in hot water mode press DHW on/off button in the top right of the controller to start the unit. If done correctly, the tap symbol appears with dots next to it, press the mode button until you have 2 dots, by doing so it will activate the immersion heater after the preset time in the field settings.

To alter the cylinder target temperature, press the oval set button and press the + button until 48°C shows. The heat pump will start up in hot water mode when the cylinder drops to 43°C or lower and will heat until 50°C.

Note that the compressor will not start for up to 6 minutes, pressing buttons may delay this. When it is in hot water heating mode then you will be able to see the can looking symbol on the controller.

Run test in hot water modeWhilst in hot water mode, check the the two port valves are arranged so that the fluid is flowing through the coil in the cylinder. To make sure that you have a gain in the cylinder, mark down the current temperature in the cylinder by pressing the oval view button.

After 15-20 minutes, take a look again at the temperature inside the cylinder, you should have a rise in temperature from earlier, if no gain has occurred, check the location of the blue sensor. If the heat pump is running normally then it will be able to increase the temperature to 48°C.

Insufficient hot water. In a heat pump system, the hot water temperature is lower than a conventional boiler system. With this in mind you will need to check that there are no mixers on the circuits for baths and/or showers that will lower this temperature even further. To check that there is no heat lost, use a thermometer at the bath or shower and make sure that the temperature is the same as what it is in the cylinder. If the temperature is lower then you will need to adjust any mixers on the system. Don’t raise the cylinder target temperature to compensate for any losses.

32

Handover of the SystemLeave the following pages with the Homeowner

Weather compensation and water law:The temperatures of the radiators will not be what you may be used to if you used to have boiler, as well as this the heat pump will run in what is known as weather compensation mode. This simply means that the heat pump will alter the flow temperature depending on the outdoor temperature.

The colder it is outside the warmer the temperature provided will be and vice versa. This is automatic and is designed to save you money. In very cold weather the radiators will be at their hottest, they will reach 50°C.

Thank you for buying a Samsung EHS heat pump system, your Samsung heat pump heats the house and hot water cylinder much like a normal fossil fuel boiler, however, there are a couple of differences which you should take notice of.

The installer of the system should have provided you with a room stat to control the temperature, or if you have underfloor heating you will have a stat in each room.

To turn on your heating, you only need to turn up your thermostat. To turn of your heating, turn it back down.

Once the unit starts up it will take time to get to temperature, it is not instant. Within 10 minutes you should feel the radiators beginning to warm up.

Running your machine efficientlyIt would prove to be expensive to heat the house up from cold every time you required heat. With a heat pump the best advice is to maintain the house at as close to constant temperature as possible all the time.

An example of this in practise is to keep the stats to at least 18°C, this is to make sure that the heat pump maintains a steady temperature and to ensures that when there is a call for heat i.e. 21°C it will not take a long period of time to heat up again, saving time and money.

To switch off the heating in the hotter months of the year, turn the stats down to 16°C, this will avoid the heat pump starting.

If you wish to adjust the room temperature with radiators then please do not start pressing buttons on the controller, just simply adjust the valve on you radiator.

General Advice

The heat pump comes with a Samsung controller which your installer will show you. This controller is not used for anything other than commissioning and diagnosing faults only.

The controller will show AU, this means automatic mode. This simply means that the heat pump is looking for an external signal to ask the heat pump to run.

If there is a fault with the system then the screen will show a code at the bottom. This would start with an E, for example the screen could show E911 - A00. In normal operation there will be a sun symbol in the top corner of the screen, if there is a fault then this will disappear. If this happens, keep this number noted as the installer/engineer will need this.Always avoid turning the power off at the mains, if the unit is off and there is cold weather then it will not be able to protect itself from frost etc...The units protection is if it’s cold outside and the unit is off, the pump will run for a few minutes to prevent the unit from freezing over. Note that in extreme weather, i.e. below -2°C, the pump will run constantly, this cannot be stopped.

Hot WaterThe temperature of the cylinder is controlled by the Samsung controller, this is setup to maintain the temperature of the water between 43°C and 50°C.As hot water is used, the heat pump will be constantly monitoring the temperature inside the cylinder, the hot water heating has priority over space heating. If the cylinder falls by 5°C from the setpoint, the heat pump will automatically switch to hot water heating. When the set temperature is reached the unit will return to space heating mode or power down if there is no call for heat. The hot water cylinder should not lose much heat, although the losses differ between different manufacturers.

We normally aim to heat the cylinder within an hour, if you want to decrease the reheat time you can do so by pressing the DHW mode button, this will show a picture of a bath and will run both heat pump and immersion heater at the same time.Within the commissioning process, the installer will have programmed an anti legionella cycle that will run once a week at 3am every wednesday, this will make the hot water hotter on Wednesdays. If there is no need for 24/7 hot water, you can time clock the hot water to reduce the running costs, the installer/engineer will run through this.

Maintenance of Monobloc Systems

The Samsung EHS units should be maintained at least once per year to comply with the warranty terms and RHI.

Maintenance procedure To start the maintenance procedure, stop the unit, clean the dirt filter within manufacturer’s recommendations and replace. Now it’s best to check for any damage to the outdoor unit such as severe dents and or debris, check the fin coils on the unit and make sure the airflow is clear. To clean the unit make sure that you don’t use any corrosive fluids, normally products such as turtle wax makes a good finish.

The next thing to do would be to test the concentration of the glycol to water in the system, this should be at 25%. If you don’t have a refractometer then please contact Solfex, refill the unit, pressure should be 0-3 bar.

Next is to test the operation of the system, firstly draw off around 50-60 litres of water. The heat pump should now automatically start up in hot water mode, if it doesn’t, press the DHW on/off power button and within 6 minutes the heat pump will start in hot water mode. You will be able to see that it is in hot water mode when the can symbol appears. The heat pump should be able to reach 48°C without help from the immersion heater. Whist the heat pump is running you can start doing other checks.

Hot water CylinderTo check the cylinder firstly you want to check the immersion connections and make sure that the blue tank sensor is still correctly in place. Also, make sure that the immersion heater is set to 70°C.

Next, press the mode button until the bath symbol pops up on the screen, this will now activate the immersion heater, check that this is now live by measuring the current from the immersion, this should be between 12-13 amps. The next thing to do is to check the temperature of the flow on the controller by pressing the oval view button.To make sure that there are not going to be any flow issues, run the unit in hot water mode, record the flow rate, then run it in heating mode with all zones closed and record the flow rate. This should be as below;

• 5 kW - 12 L/min

• 9 kW - 20 L/min

• 16 kW - 30 L/min

The last step is to have the unit running full tilt, record the temperature of the air at the back of the unit and the temperature in the surrounding area i.e. garden, these should be the same temperature. It is important that the air is not recirculating.

Problems and Faults

In a heat pump system it is mostly assumed that the electric bill is the heat pump, this is not the case as there are many other electrical products such as the lights, TV, baby monitors etc that could be contributing to a large portion of the bills. In order to clarify the heat pumps running cost we need to determine the costs of the other electrical items to work out the running costs of the heat pump. An easy way to work out the usage of the heat pump is to turn the power off to the heat pump and measure the background usage.

HeatingIf you are noticing high running costs it is possible that something isn’t setup right, this could be one of the following issues; The room stats are constantly sending a heating signal to the heat pump. The room stats are not connected to the heat pump, this could be wiring errors or incorrect field settings. There could be towel rads that keep the heat pump running all the time. One thing to check is that the heat pump turns off when all the stats are turned down or off.

When the unit is set up it should have AU on the Samsung controller meaning that the heat pump will only operate when it receives a run signal back to B22 or B24 in the control box. The best thing to do is to switch of the stats and run the tests from earlier.

Hot waterIf you are noticing a lack of hot water it could be that the tank stat is positioned too low in the cylinder and the immersion heater is on all the time. Another possibility is that the cylinder stat has come out of the pocket and cannot measure the temperature in the cylinder.Alos, if a recirculation pump has been fitted, this could be reducing the stored temperature and causing the immersion heater to activate. To test if the cylinder stat is being measured by the unit accurately you can measure the temperature of water leaving the cylinder and compare it against the temperature on the controller by pressing the view button. If the tank sensor is displaying a low temperature then the immersion heater would run constantly.

To make sure that everything is set correctly, take a look in the field settings at 3032, this is the delay before the immersion heater is activated. This is usually set at 30mins for a 200L cylinder or 60mins for a 300L cylinder. The next thing to check is the hot water set temperature is not set above 48°C, press the oval set button and adjust with + or - buttons.

Dead remote controller but red lights are on the indoor PCBOn first startup you will notice two red LEDs light up, after around 4 minutes the screen will light up.

If the controller hasn’t started after around 4 minutes and the control board has the red LEDs lit up, there is a small brown eeprom PCB plugged into the board. You will need to check that this is plugged in fully, if this is missing then this is the problem and you will need a new brown PCB.

00 shows on the remote controller00 will show when the MIM board is first powered up, this means that the PCB has activated but the outdoor unit is not connected and fault code E201 will appear.

Check the F1 & F2 wiring is good between the outdoor unit and indoor unit, also check the power to the outdoor unit.

01 shows on the remote controller01 on the controller means that there is power to the controller but the outdoor unit isn’t connected to the control board. Check the F1 & F2 wiring is ok between the outdoor and indoor unit and make sure the outdoor unit has power.

E911 the water is not moving fast enough (my units keep stopping or won’t start)If the E911 fault shows, it simply means that the flow rate through the unit is not high enough, there should be a flow meter installed on the system, if not then you will need to fit one.

If you look at the flow meter then you will be able to see the flow rate in litres per minute. The flow switch for 5kW units cuts out at 8 L/m and anything higher will cut out at 15 L/m. If the flow rate drops to this or below then E911 will show.If you have air in the system it will start to trip the switch, if you hold the top of the flow switch you will be able to feel the paddle move and it will be rattling.

The main causes of E911 are:

The flow switch is mounted the wrong way, this can be turned around by loosening the head of the switch, there is an arrow on the head and this needs to face in the direction of the flow.

Air in the system, this will need to be vented out. To do this, it’s best to run the circulation pump for a while to clear the air, the best way to do so is to run it in test mode, after a while the air should be cleared and commissioning can be started.Another possibility is if the flow switch is too close to a pump, bend or valve, the flow switch should be fitted at least 150 mm from any other fitting.

To check the actual flow meter, remove it from the fitting and the PCB. Using a multimeter on ohms Ω setting, place the probes into the plug of the flow switch, this should display the infinite symbol. Whilst the paddle is in its normal position, move the paddle and it should measure 0 ohms Ω.If moving the paddle does not change the value then it is likely the flow switch is faulty.

Cold Weather Protection my unit won’t startThe Samsung heat pump has a variety of cold weather protection functions, these are;

The heat pump will not start if the fluid in the system is 10°C or lower, if the sensors within the heat pump detect that the heat exchanger has reached 10°C or less there are two things that the unit will do;The first thing is the circulation pump will be activated for a few minutes to pump the fluid from inside the building to maintain the temperature. Also, if the fluid coming back to the heat pump is cold but above 10°C, the unit will start in heating mode to bring the fluid temp to 20°C even without a run signal.

If the ambient (outside) temperature drops below -2°C the circulation pump will never stop, this is to stop any freezing.

To check the temperature in the system, press the view button until the house within the circle appears. This will tell you the temperature and the system will respond accordingly.

If you happen to be commissioning from cold you will need to heat up the fluid, the best way to do this is to use the immersion in the cylinder to transfer heated fluid from the cylinder to the heat pump.

E904 Error If you come across an E904 error code, this means that there is an issue with the cylinder stat, this error will only show if the field setting 3011 is set to 1 and the cylinder stat has an issue.

To see if this sensor is functioning correctly, press the view button until the tap symbol shows, this is the temperature inside the cylinder. If this shows -50 then the sensor is not plugged into the socket on the MIM board.
