Caring Hands Veterinary Hospital, known for high quality pet care, hosted a seminar on anesthetic safety

for area vet hospitals on Feb 2. Led by award winning Dr. Khursheed Mama, Associ-ate Professor of Anesthesia at Colorado State University, veterinary professionals dis-cussed anesthetic protocol, including blood pressure monitoring and ventilation.

Dr. Brett Rhoades believes continuous education, team-work and compassion paves the way for excellent medi-cal care. Clients agree: Car-ing Hands ranked among the top fi ve stellar boarding fa-

cilities four years running in Denver’s A List competition. The hospital also achieved prestigious AAHA re-ac-creditation which measures compliance in 18 categories. From surgery preparation and anesthesia monitoring to human resource policies, Caring Hands was evaluated on over 900 standards and is proud to be one of only 15% of hospitals in the US who voluntarily and successfully complete the accreditation process.

This year, the City of Thornton will celebrate the 18th annual Thorntonfest! This community event has become one of the most popular events in the area and attracts about 40-50,000 people each year. The event includes: three entertain-ment stages, a car show, Paw Fest, a venue that fea-tures pet and animal-related exhibits and animal vac-cinations, a teen Battle of the Bands stage, infl atable amusements for the kids, a climbing wall, bungee tram-polines and the Cottonwood Classic 5K walk/run. The Marketplace, containing business exhibitor booths and craft booths, is a great place for small businesses to sell their merchandise. Grand opening festivities associated with the brand

new Carpenter Park boat-house and carousel will also be taking place at this year’s event.

Another festival in the City of Thornton line-up is Harvest Fest. This festival takes place in September at Community Park and cel-ebrates the history and cul-tural diversity of Thornton. Harvest Fest features a salsa tasting contest, a skate park competition, entertainment stages, children’s attractions, as well as various exhibitor and vendor spaces. In De-cember, a holiday-themed Santa’s Village comes to life for WinterFest. This ex-tremely popular festival fea-tures miniature buildings, an ice skating pond, Santa’s House where children can visit with the “big guy” him-self, ice sculpting displays, 400+ lit trees and a unique winter fi reworks show that helps create a magical expe-rience sure to fi ll everyone with the holiday spirit. Be-cause there is no event like this in the surrounding area, WinterFest is becoming a holiday tradition for families across the north metro area.

Thornton is also the place for neighbors and families

to gather on the Fourth of July. Attendees bring their blankets, Frisbees and pic-nics and gather at the mul-tipurpose fi elds at 108th Avenue and Colorado Bou-levard. Performances by the Thornton Community Band and Longmont Symphony feature patriotic music, fol-lowed by night time skydiv-ers and a spectacular fi re-works show!

Thornton also hosts several special events throughout the year primar-ily geared towards children. The Easter Egg Scramblein the spring and Trunk or Treat is a wonderful Hallow-een extravaganza! Paws for a Dip is a fun way to enjoy the “dog days of summer”, giving dogs the opportunity to play in City Pool at the end of the season after it has been closed to the public.

There is something for ev-eryone at the City of Thorn-ton’s festivals and special events! Created to celebrate the underlying value of com-munity and giving citizens a place for neighbors to gather and families to come togeth-er, these festivals and special events help make Thornton special.

Caring Hands Hosts Anesthesia SafetyMeeting for Area Veterinarians

Bestway Insulation has been in Business since 1976. We are a company that always experiments to get the highest results in the state. We strive to educate our em-ployees to all become Building Per-formance Institute educated and certifi ed. We feel by education and experimentation we can give your home the best results. I have just recently worked with NREL and the Department of Energy to de-velop the New National Standards of Insulation and Weatherization using our techniques.

We have developed methods of compressing fi berglass in walls for the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000 homes and re-blowing it with cellulose to stop wind penetration. We can even do this on a brand new home and get their bills 40-50% reduced. We have proved this numerous times with the energy makeover contests with Xcel and the Energy Effi cient

Building Coalition. We have do-nated, redoing over 11 homes in donations to the community to show testing scores. For the Easter Seals homes in Empire, Colorado, there were 40 of us in the Auditing, Insulation, Solar and Air Sealing fi elds that went up there to donate our time to make the cabins more comfortable for the kids and fuel effi cient for the organization. Each company was given two homes to do. Where the others were getting 50 to 200 CFM reduction, we got 1300 and 1500 CFM reduction on the cabins we did. In other words, we reduced their natural air chang-es per hour hugely.

We are always striving to give back to the community, but most-ly to our planet. Thus our slo-gan SAVING OUR PLANET ONE HOUSE AT A TIME.

In the past with new construc-tion contractors it has always been how fast you can insulate a home and take whatever short cuts you can without getting caught.

I am not that way because you need to be slower and precise to do the job correctly and make the home energy effi cient so we stop heating up the planet and wasting energy.

We have been to several Global Climate Conferences to help slow

down the heating of this planet if possible. We were one of two com-panies invited to Arnold Schwar-zenegger’s in California and lis-tened to people all over the world talk about the droughts in their countries and though we can’t do it all at least we are making a dent in Colorado.

We are a family business that re-fuses to be bought out by corpora-tions that would ruin what we are trying to do. It’s not all about the money. It’s about the results we are getting. My two sons will take over the business sometime in the future to make sure that homes are going to be done correctly. I be-lieve we have instilled quality not quantity and know how important air sealing is, the best and proper materials for each job, and the im-

portance of knowing building sci-ence.

When asked to give a bid on in-sulating the governor’s mansion, I was told there was a 2000 sq. ft. at-tic to be done. I was also told that no one could live in the mansion during the winter, but the Ritters wanted to. I knew the attic had to be much bigger than 2000 sq. ft. and the walls went straight up. It wasn’t an A-frame home. I looked outside the box. I asked if we could bring in infrared cameras and blower door and with the help of Nancy Kellogg’s blower door and camera, we found a 4000 sq. ft. at-tic space that was hiding behind a wall in the main attic. We got past that and found three other add-on attics. We found an elevator shaft, two dumb waiter shafts and four

4x4 chases that went down four stories. We also found 250 sq. ft. of chases behind the knee walls. I was told that the Ritters would use up to 14 blankets each to watch TV to keep from freezing and they had up to 85-mile-an-hour winds blowing through their home with all the wind tunnels we found. In order to sleep, they would have to turn their electric blankets up to 10 and pile fi ve regular blankets on that in order to make it through the night.

I bet Governor Ritter’s daughter that she wouldn’t need those blan-kets when we got done.

I won the bet. We reduced the governor’s mansions utility bills 10 fold.

Helping you take care of business

Healthy workers are good for business.

Businesses need all the help they can get to keep costs down. Having the right occupational health services fi rm as your designated pro-vider can lower Workers’ Compensation insurance costs and reduce the rate of injuries in the workplace.

OccMed Colorado is a lo-cal leader in the delivery of occupational medicine. Per-sonal communication, high quality patient care and a broad understanding of the Workers’ Compensation sys-tem make OccMed Coloradothe preferred provider of employers throughout met-ro Denver.

“Employers hope their workers do not get injured on the job,” said Dr. Gary Zuehlsdorff, an OccMed Colorado physician. “But, despite their best efforts, it happens sometimes. We do everything we can to pro-vide timely, effective treat-ment that gets employees back to work as safely and quickly as possible.”

OccMed Colorado’s work injury management services include: extended hours for primary injury treatment, independent medical ex-ams, modifi ed duty pro-grams, onsite occupational and physical therapy, onsite radiology services and post-accident substance abuse programs.

“We also work with em-ployers to help them create the safest working environ-ments possible,” said Dr. Greg Smith, another physi-

The Mapleton Board of Education is excited to in-troduce Mapleton Reads, a community-wide reading

program aimed at bringing people together through lit-erature.

The fi rst Mapleton Readstitle, Michael Vey, the Prison-er of Cell 25, by Richard Paul Evans, is a popular young adult science-fi ction best seller. Families and commu-nity members are invited to read along with Mapleton and the Board of Educa-tion and foster the develop-ment of a community-wide conversation through book discussions and events.

Mapleton students in grades 6 through 12 will partici-pate in Mapleton Reads by completing activities that link the book directly to Dis-trict Reading, Writing and Communication standards. Community members are invited to check out a copy of Michael Vey at Mapleton’s Administration Building, 591 E. 80th Avenue, Denver. For a list of events and infor-mation call 303.853.1000.

Boulder store. Together with Jay’s sister, Jeannie, the Troys were fortunate to purchase their own franchise store in 2005. The store was es-tablished in 2000 when the Northglenn Marketplace shopping center replaced the old Northglenn Mall.

Mountain Man Nut & Fruit Co. is a well-respected brand, familiar to many Coloradans. The Troys abso-lutely love their customers, being particularly pleased

seeing the enjoyment that their high-quality gift bas-kets, trail mixes, chocolates, dried fruit and candy bring to the community. The Troys’ retail store also has many additional gift ideas, from tea sets, aprons, puz-zles and dolls to Colorado-produced food items. They make and ship gift baskets everywhere. Best of all, they are available six days a week, so stop in sometime and say hello!

As the City of Northglenn continues to grow, North Metro Fire Rescue District is on the leading edge of be-ing a responsive, all-hazard organization that works to provide a caring, high-qual-ity, professional delivery of service. We have a strong passion for the services we provide, and we are commit-ted to being there when our citizens need us most.

This commitment starts with the dedicated person-nel that show true excel-lence and professionalism in their actions each day. Whether it be providing emergency medical ser-vices or handling a house fi re, North Metro fi refi ghters are tied to the people that they protect. They represent

their skills with “excellence through each individual act” and push through tough challenges to deliver the best level of service to our community.

At North Metro we be-lieve that in order to be suc-cessful in protecting our citizens, we need strong partnerships with local law enforcement and public of-fi cials. By building partner-ships, we ensure top notch public safety services in Northglenn. We value the strong communication that we have developed between agencies and the outcome of our efforts show how com-munity partnerships lend energy from one another to protect our District.

This energy goes even further with the dynamic leadership demonstrated from our Board of Directors, who is the voice of the com-munity that shares the same vision of its people. The vi-sion to protect the lives and property of those involved in emergencies is a refl ec-tion of the great citizens we

serve. We look forward to continuing the efforts of this vision through constant or-ganizational improvements in our strategy, training and skills.

As Fire Chief of North Metro, I am proud of the exceptional emergency and prevention services that we provide to the community. Our organization is made up of many people that come from many places but we all have a common core belief. Our commitment to service makes a positive difference in the lives of the people we contact, making North Met-ro what it is today.

I encourage you to call our Headquarters at 303.452.9910 to ask ques-tions or learn more about North Metro. By receiving your feedback, we stay on course to continue provid-ing high quality services. Remember the main thing is to keep our community safe from fi res and emergencies!

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities is one of the na-tion’s largest multidisciplinary cultural centers welcoming over 350,000 visitors a year to its 144,000 sq. ft. building. With award-win-ning theater, visual art exhibitions, outdoor amphitheater and classes for children and adults alike, the Arvada Center is recognized as a premiere venue for arts, culture, and education in the Rocky Moun-tain region. In recent years, the Ar-vada Center expanded its range of programming and regional base of support through creative collabo-rations and strategic alignments with cultural, civic and commer-cial organizations throughout the state. The Center’s cooperative business approach has been dem-onstrated throughout the entire

organization, highlighting part-nerships in the Center’s theaters, galleries, educational division and outdoor summer programming.

The Arvada Center is one of the largest employers in the City of Arvada operating with an annual $10M budget and employing over 300 people on a year round and seasonal basis. From administra-tion to education, visual and per-formance, many artists, actors, teachers and staff have helped the Center become one of the pre-miere venues for arts employment.

Coming into 2013, exciting changes are happening around the Center. The 526 seat Main Stage, home to award winning musicals upgraded with new theater seats offering better cushioning and support. The response has been terrifi c as patrons settled into an-other great season of theater.

The Center’s Main Gallery is go-ing through a transition by replac-ing existing carpeting with pol-ished concrete fl ooring, making the area more aesthetically pleas-ing.

The most signifi cant change is the announcement of a new Exec-

utive Director. In February, the staff will welcome Philip C. Sneed to the top position at the Center. Sneed has an extensive arts background, most recently serving as Produc-ing Artistic Director at Colorado Shakespeare Festival.

The Arvada Center provides the best in arts education with over 900 classes and well regarded spring and summer camps. The popular children’s theater program is cur-rently offering No Dogs Allowed which will be seen by as many as 1,000 school children daily. Many students stay after the show to par-ticipate in an Arts Day program - a fun, educational hands on experi-ence that enhances their theater experience. In 2011 more than 35,000 children participated in Arts Day or an Outreach program that goes directly into schools.

The Arvada Center Education division includes integrated pro-gramming that provides young artists the opportunity to receive advance training. The Drama Academy offers students instruc-tion in all aspects of theater arts. Last fall, the Center launched a new initiative, the Arvada Center

Theater Academy Company, an in-tensive program offering students the opportunity to work alongside professional educators.

Young dancers eagerly sign up for training in ballet, jazz and modern dance offered through the Dance Academy and perform in spring recitals each year. Aspir-ing musicians study with the Front Range Youth Symphony Orchestra, an enhancement to school music programs offering advanced train-ing in symphony and chamber orchestras and concert strings. Students perform three annual concerts on the Main Stage.

The Arvada Center is recognized for the quality of its shows created at the Center and was recently awarded “Best Season for a Theatre Company” from the Colorado The-atre Guild. The theater’s popular series averages 5,700+ season sub-scribers. The current season con-tinues with the musical, Man of La Mancha, followed by the hilarious play Dividing the Estate and clos-ing with the whodunit musical comedy Curtains in July. The up-coming season will be announced in spring and promises to be fi lled

with great selections for all theater enthusiasts.

The Galleries at the Center offer some of the best visual art in the region and the current exhibition is no exception. Art of the State, a juried exhibition of 160 Colorado artists is showing in all three galler-ies (over 10,000 sq. ft.). In April, the 42nd Annual Jefferson Foundation High School Art Exhibition will fea-ture works from Jefferson County high schools.

The Arvada Center is home to the Arvada History Museum. The museum offers the opportunity for visitors to learn about the history of Arvada through its extensive col-lection of artifacts and displays.

The popular CenterFest Sum-mer Series returns to the 1,600 seat amphitheater. CenterFest pro-vides collaborative opportunities to area performing arts groups to perform in a beautiful outdoor set-ting. Concerts will also heat up the amphitheater with national acts produced by Nobody In Particular Presents.

In the increasingly fragmented media world, newspapers reach the highest-quality citizens. De-spite the notion that newspapers are dead or dying, community newspapers with their hyper-local news, enjoy a sustainable reader-ship. Residents report reading their local community paper from cover to cover, and fi nd the news more relevant than in bigger metro pa-pers.

Colorado Community Media embraces all things local.

We are nearly one year into our new venture, combining 22 Denver area community newspapers and media sites covering more than 185,000 residences. Often, our pa-pers reach readers that big daily papers do not, creating a better and more profi table response for

our advertisers, large and small. In 2012, our publications won

more than 90 awards in the Colora-do Press Association Better News-paper Contest. Better content is drawing more readers to both our print and online outlets.

Our stories cover local policy-making, high school sports, new business openings, special events and more. We cover the big stories, too, but always include the impact on your community.

Going local: the secret to big success

Since July 1, 2012, AT&T has been the new state relay provider for Relay Colorado, a free public service that enables people with a hearing or speech loss to com-municate with standard telephone users using a text telephone or other assistive device such as a captioned phone. The conversa-tion is relayed between the two parties by a specially trained Relay Communications Assistant. AT&T employs a highly skilled and expe-rienced team of Communication Assistants, and offers an integrated

combination of service and tech-nology for the citizens of Colorado.

For more than 26 years – lon-ger than any other relay provider in the industry – AT&T has been connecting relay users with their world. During this time, AT&T has consistently provided innovative, reliable, high-quality relay services and excellent customer service. Today, AT&T’s commitment to be the best relay provider continues, just as it did when the company handled its fi rst relay call in Janu-ary 1987.

AT&T has vast experience in working with all sectors of busi-ness—including state govern-ments and their agencies – as well as citizens and advocacy groups. AT&T works closely with the Colo-rado Public Utilities Commission to ensure the best customer expe-rience for traditional relay users.

AT&T Relay Colorado also works closely with those in the fi eld of

captioned telephone service to imple-ment and pro-vide state-o f - t h e - a r t technology to Colora-do and its citizens.

A T & T e m p l oy s more than 2,100 peo-ple in Colorado. AT&T has spent more than $1.2 billion on goods and services purchased from Col-orado suppliers, supporting jobs and economic activity in the state. AT&T Colorado operations gener-ated more than $79 million in local and state taxes helping to support additional vital programs. AT&T and its employees contributed more than $685,000 through char-itable programs throughout Colo-

rado in 2012 alone. Lastly, AT&T em-

ployees and retirees do-

nated more than 17,000 hours of p e r s o n a l time on c o m m u -nity out-

charitable and community organi-

and enhance our networks across Colorado, we fi rmly believe that every American should have ac-cess to reliable, affordable com-munications service,” said Bill Soards, President AT&T Colorado. “We are proud to work with the state in making communications services accessible to everyone—

both in Colorado and across the

country.”

AT&T Relay Colorado is proud

to support and work alongside

the Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, and

Now is the time of year when holiday bills are due, and you still have all your other bills to pay, which likely means you’re short on cash. Why not take advantage of items that are sitting around your home collecting dust? “Gold is a very valuable commodity,” says Jeanne Leo, Vice President of Marketing at Golden Nugget Gold Buyers. “When the economy is weak and families are struggling to make ends meet, gold is a great way to generate some extra income.”

With nine locations around the Metro Denver area and one in Fort Collins, Golden Nugget Gold Buyers purchases most precious metals a consumer might have on hand. Whether it’s gold, silver and

platinum jewelry or silver tea sets, fl atware, candlesticks, or platters, they’ll buy it. They’ll purchase your unwanted jewelry, even if it’s broken. They also buy gold coins, as well as US currency – dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollars – minted before 1965.

Why come to Golden Nugget Gold Buyers to sell your gold and

other precious metals when, as Leo puts it, “Everybody and their brother seem to be in the gold buying business these days?” They’re not a phone store or a pawn shop. Their stores are safe, secure and very inviting, and this is all they do. As licensed professionals in the precious metals industry, they are experts in the fi eld. They

know the market prices and the true value of your precious metals. Not only are you certain of getting a fair deal, Leo assures you, “Sellers will get the best deal in Denver from us. We pay the highest you’ll fi nd.”

The process is extremely simple. Come in to one of their many stores with your items. Sit down with a

buyer who performs a three-step verifi cation of the value of your items. They weigh your items and make you an offer. Then it’s up to you whether you want to walk out with a check or not. No pressure. It’s that simple, and customer service is the focus.

You don’t even need to come into a store to earn extra money for your bills. They’ll help you set up a gold party in your home. “It’s like a Tupperware party,” explains Leo. “But tell your guests to leave the check book at home. They’ll take a check home instead.” And the best part is, the hostess gets a check on the spot for ten percent of the value of the gold purchased at the party, plus many other perks as well.

Golden Nugget Gold Buyers has nine conveniently located stores in the Metro area, including Arvada, Aurora, Centennial, Denver, Englewood, Lakewood and Littleton. For directions or to fi nd out more about hosting a gold party, call them at 303-425-GOLD or check them out online atwww.goldennuggetgoldbuyers.com.
