Hello again, we are almost at the Easter Holidays and thus the end of Term 1. A good time to reflect on some of the highlights so far this year. Here are a few: Mid-semester Reports These have just been mailed out and feedback has been very positive on the number of excellent results visible in each year level. I checked two year levels myself and was very impressed. Of course, we will always look for improvement. Senior Learning Academy The Year 11 students in the academy have been working really well. They have been given Library entitlements at JCU, spent time over at the University, they have their laptops and are achieving good results. We are very excited about this program and its potential to lift the academic status of our school. Year 7 into 8 Parent Evening This was held on 30 March, with a good roll-up of prospective Year 8s for 2012. It was a very professional evening which showcased our school faculties and some of the new facilities. Easter Concert Our Stage and Concert Bands performed to a sold-out audience on Tuesday 5 April. If you have not seen them perform you are missing something! They will only get better, too, as the year progresses. A highlight of the evening was the performance by the Trinity Beach State School Band. There is a wonderful synergy across both schools with the music program. F.O.G.s Indigenous Careers Expo This is an annual event, supported by the Former Origin Greats (F.O.G.s). It is a wonderful opportunity for the region’s Indigenous students to focus on and set goals for their future.

Swimming Carnival Was one of the best in recent memory. Well attended and a great atmosphere. A credit to our sport leaders and all students. Year 12 Induction Our first formal event of the year which was followed by a Senior Leaders Conference @ JCU. We have a wonderful group of Senior Leaders who are and will continue to do our school proud. I will run out of room but should also mention interschool sport; school photographs; Constitutional Convention; Mornington Island Dance Troupe visit; Harmony Day; Helping Friends; FTV, Biology and Outdoor Ed. excursions; Science Challenge … the list goes on. It has been a busy and productive Term 1. The bottom line of course, is that students need to be learning and positioning themselves for their future. Can I close by thanking:

♦ Staff for all their dedication this

term ♦ Parents / guardians for your

support of the school over your child’s education

♦ The P & C for their ongoing

support ♦ The students for their efforts and

pride in our school. Have a safe and relaxing Easter holiday everyone. Remember we have a great school! Regards, Barry Courtney

FFROMROM THETHE P & C P & C My name is Keith Seaton and I took over Presidency of the P&C in the Annual General Meeting in March this year. Years 8, 9 and 10 students formerly from Trinity Beach Primary School may remember me from the School Camps at Kuranda Wildlife Safari Park, Mungali Falls and Lake Tinaroo where I was one of the parent helpers. Please welcome the new P&C Committee Members if you see us around school: Ingrid Wall - Vice President Beatrix Pienaar - Treasurer Sue Medway - Assistant Treasurer Mandy Mayers - Temporary Secretary unti l a full t ime replacement is appointed Janice Bradley - Assistant Secretary L y n T r i m b l e - Q C P C A Representative (our governing body) and the existing members who you already know. Please thank outgoing members for their dedicated hard work over the past year, and to Tony Gorell, who has been President for the past five years. We appreciate they’ve done a splendid job and have now handed over to the new Committee and Members. My first task in this role has been to write to all the Heads of Departments asking what we, the P&C, can do to help them. This has been followed with letters to all Student Leaders, via Administration, asking for their input as to what they would like us, the P&C, to do to help them. Now, I’m sure you’d agree, you can’t do anything without funding. To this end I’ve launched some Fund Raising initiatives: - How about a Sponsored ‘Spellathon’ supported by the English Dept, or a Sponsored ‘Mental Arithmeticathon’ supported by the Maths Dept? Does a Sponsored ‘Grand Prix Style Race’ at

our local Go Cart Track appeal? How about camping out on school oval in cardboard boxes, does that appeal (this also highlights to us the plight of the homeless street kids)? For the parents; a ‘Trivia Night,’ we have at our school someone who MC’s these regularly. I believe they are all workable fundraising models and have been used successfully in other schools that I’m aware of. As I see it, we ‘kicked off’ in March, in the ‘1st Quarter’ and I want to generate some fundraising action soon with a view towards implementation of ideas to improve Our School for Our Students. I leave these thoughts with you and w e l c o m e y o u r f e e d b a c k Administration. Email: [email protected] Think Big, don’t be afraid to Succeed……… Keith Seaton

MMORNINGTONORNINGTON I ISLANDSLAND D DANCERSANCERS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (ATSIS) students joined with the dance students to watch the Mornington Island Dancers Performance on 11th March. The dances passed on the lore of their ancestors teaching the young the dangers of their environment, the methods for hunting, and the joys of celebrating and other aspects of the traditional lives of the Lardil people. The ATSIS students have been learning about ways of knowing and protocols for Aboriginal people. The visit emphasized the holistic way of learning and the traditional ways of yarning, song and dance that is used to pass on knowledge. The young Indigenous students also attending the performance were spellbound and heard the messages of the ancestors and the need for respect and balance often missed when told to them by non Indigenous people in authority.

CCOASTOASTFM FM ININ THETHE C COMMUNITYOMMUNITY Sunday 26 March saw the school’s CoastFM Radio students broadcast the big Toad Day Out at Smithfield Village. The event was held to raise awareness of pests in the local area, including toads and different types of problematic ants. Radio students set up in the park providing music for the locals and interviewing special invited guests. Possibly the most interesting interview of the day was with Bob Irwin, the face of Toad Day Out. He spoke of his role in the north, including the eradication of toads and preservation of sea turtles and dugongs. His interview was recorded and played back on the station by students who covered the event. The students were congratulated for their efforts and hope to represent the school at next year’s event.

WWEE NEEDNEED L LIBRARIESIBRARIES NOWNOW MOREMORE THANTHAN E EVERVER...... Last month in "What's New" (on the school website - Library) we featured a brilliant presentation by The Wikiman called The Time for Libraries is Now. We hope this will remind you of how we are able to help you with daily information overload.

Did you know that the new buzzword for a library is "iCentre"?

The addition of twenty brand new laptops this week supports this important role for libraries. We now have twenty-five computers for individuals to use in the library and ten new laptops in trolleys for staff to book for classes using the research area. Thank you to Mrs Kosky and Mr Smith, our school IT Technicians, for configuring them ready for use.

Students on study periods need to have their laptop scanned out to them, but classes using the trolleys need to record their names and laptop number on the clipboards. Teachers will check that each laptop is in A1 shape and returned at the end of the lesson. Laptops will generally be charged to use without AC power supply. Please don't remove any power cords from the trolley.

No matter how digital we go, our digits (the ones on the ends of our arms) and all our senses still like to connect with primary resources. Whilst our library doesn't hold any 'realia', we have been sampling some dioramas and specimens from the Queensland Museum. So far we've showcased: Antarctic Explorer, Marine Life and currently have Outback Queensland on display. But by far the most popular display this term, was given to us last week by our friends at the RSL. It was bigger than a mini minor when we opened it up. It was full of everyday items used by Australian soldiers in various 20th Century conflicts as well as memorabilia and medals. A warm thank you to the Cairns RSL for allowing us to inspect this priceless collection at our leisure. With Anzac Day coming up during the holidays, we also want to express our appreciation to the Returned Services League for their annual book donation. Look for, "Tell the Children - Memories from World War II Veterans and Essays from School Children” next time you visit the library to understand more about the sacrifice of the men and women of the armed services - past, present and future.

Remember the library is available for you to research and work on your assignments during the lunch breaks.
