Hi Everyone,

Welcome to our June newsletter and to the end of Semester 1. A good time to reflect on what has been achieved so far this year….

♦ Recently EQ conducted a Teaching and Learning Audit of our school, the second in the last two years. The aim of the audit is to gauge school improvement in eight facets of teaching and learning. We improved in all eight domains from last year and the auditors were very positive in their feedback to us. In particular, they commented on the improvement in student outcomes across the school, the positivity of staff and the pride shown by students about the school. I will have the audit evaluation placed on the website with the school annual report so you can see the results in more detail.

For me, the audit was an affirmation of the direction we are moving as a school. I was delighted, but not surprised, to hear of the positivity shown by both staff and students—I keep saying what a great school we have!

♦ The School Annual Report will be posted on the website shortly. It will show the significant gains in learning we have made throughout 2010. Our goal is to keep improving. Our focus will remain on improving outcomes for all students in all year levels. I have been pleased with the progress of such programs as our

• Literacy & Numeracy Program for Years 8/9

• the whole school approach to teaching literacy - following intensive PD (Personal Development) for staff last year

• our Senior Learning Academy - our top academic students in Year 11 partnership with James Cook University

We set annual improvement targets/goals and I am confident we will improve further in 2011, from the gains made last year.

♦ Some great stories/achievements recently including:

• Jason Fox has won a Barron River Electorate Queensland Day Award for his contribution to music in the local region and his work with local school bands. Again well deserved!

• Spotlight was a wonderful showcase of our Performing Arts students and faculty. We have such great programs in the Visual and Performing Arts - equal to any in the region.

Two final items from me:

1. With Semester 1 exams completed and reports due to be issued, a timely reminder of our expectations re completion of assessment. All students must complete all assessments. This is part of our high expectations agenda and is one of the reasons we are seeing an improvement in outcomes. For our Year 11/12 students, we will be reviewing progress individually for each student and interviewing if progress is not satisfactory. The review is part of our Success Management Program for senior students with our goal that all students exit school meeting the criteria of the FNQ Service Commitment for State Schools ie with a good OP; with the QCE; with a Cert II or above; or with a SAT.

2. The next phase of the Federal Government’s Secondary Computer Funding Program is upon us and it will have implications for the school. Education Queensland has recommended this round of computers be laptop devices and that schools prepare for 1:1 take home program. We have been preparing for this and are trialling a take home program with our Senior Learning Academy students. It is highly likely that as many as two or three year levels will have take home devices from the beginning of 2012. There is much to do to prepare for this. I will be working very closely with the P&C and will keep parents well informed on progress. We have just had a wireless internet upgrade completed for the entire school, we are doing significant PD with staff and we will assess the trial currently under way. Exciting times ahead!!

Have a wonderful June—July break! I look forward to great Semester results for our students. Until next month, Barry Courtney

AASPIRATIONALSPIRATIONAL LLEARNINGEARNING ………… Ben Seymour (2010 Graduate, OP1) is currently studying Medicine at JCU in Townsville. He received an Australian Student Prize for recognition of his academic excellence. Congratulations Ben.

CONGRATULATIONS Monica Glasser (9F) is a Level 5 gymnast and she competed at Regional Championship in Townsville on 14th May. She placed 1st on Floor, 2nd on Bars, 3rd on Beam and 3rd on Vault giving her a placing of 1st Overall. Monica will be competing at the State Championship in Brisbane during June.

We would like to congratulate her and wish her all the best.

SSCIENCECIENCE?? James Cook University and Smithfield State High School have been working in partnership for eighteen months on an action research project aimed at improving academic achievement and engagement in Science.

In 2011 the project is focussing on assessment of students using authentic tasks rather than traditional exams (ie tasks that need to be done, rather than exams which are set just to test students).

Year 9 extension students in Ms Johnson's Science class will be assessed on their preparation of a stall for a science fair on the school oval, where three hundred local Year 7 students will attend from six local primary schools. They will also be assessed on their contribution to genuine PhD field trials into the effects of Biochar on plant growth.

Biochar is charcoal, and is formed by burning biological carbon containing material, e.g. bagasse or wood, with limited oxygen at high temperatures. Burning the materials this way locks the carbon atoms into the charcoal structure for hundreds of years, rather than releasing it into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide greenhouse gas, as would be the case if the material was burnt in oxygen or allowed to decompose. Biochar has also been found have a beneficial effect on plant growth if mixed into soil.

Students are pictured with JCU PhD student Amy Beavan preparing plant growth trials, where the effects of different biochar contents in soils will be investigated. As well as setting up the trials Amy has also talked to students about the science behind biochar.

THE ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER STUDIES CLASS VISITS TJAPUKAI ABORIGINAL CULTURAL PARK On May 24, as part of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies course students enjoyed a firsthand experience with the local area and the traditional owners of the land upon which Smithfield State High School is situated, the Djabugay people.

Traditional ways of knowing and protocols were passed onto the students through the Dreaming re-enactment in the Creation Theatre. Students learnt about the traditional lives of the Djabugay people from the artwork and artefacts found in the Magic Space.

The Tjapukai Aboriginal dancers passed on their knowledge of hunting methods. Dance and song have been used by the Djabugay people to pass on their lores, knowledge and culture for over 40 000 years. Students learnt about the traditional uses of weapons and preparation of the often poisonous food found in the rainforest.

The class would like to thank the Djabugay people working at Tjapukai for their willingness to share and enrich the student’s knowledge and understanding of the traditional custodians of the land.

SOCIAL SCIENCE FIELD TRIPS Last month has seen students in the Social Sciences taking part in a number of field trips. Early in May the Senior Tourism classes and Year 12 Geography students travelled to Green Island to experience the World Heritage site. With perfect weather, the students were able to have an enjoyable experience while still learning about the management of the island. The tourism students were given an informative tour of the ‘back of house’ of the resort and the geography students were able to gather valuable information to complete their assessment for this term.

The Year 11 students went on a field trip to complement their course work on managing catchments. They studied a section of the Barron River from Kuranda to Kamerunga, travelling by both bus and Skyrail. Again, the students were able to gain information for their assessment.

Finally, all the Year 10 students travelled to the showgrounds for the annual Careers’ Expo. This trip is an important aspect of the Career Planning that is undertaken as part of the Social Science course. They were able to find information about a variety of careers from university courses, TAFE, apprenticeships and knowledge about entering the workforce and talk to people directly involved in each of these pathways.

I would like to complement all students who went on these trips for their exemplary behaviour. You represented our school in the best manner possible. Thank you.

FROM THE MATHEMATICS FACULTY... With exams upon us it is now a prudent time to remind students and parents of both the opportunities provided by the Maths Department, and your child’s own responsibility to achieving their very best.

Having almost accomplished two terms of solid work, students should now be in a regular routine of learning and practice at home. Most students are coming to class prepared with their required materials (notebook, textbook, calculator and writing materials). However, a small few are still struggling with this very important step in their learning, and are unlikely to achieve the success they are capable of. This also applies to revision of concepts at home. To choose a timely analogy, Chris McCormack is an elite Triathlete, because he puts in the hardwork, not just on the day of competition, but constantly training hard to achieve his best. This applies equally to study and homework.

For students who struggle with assignments or homework, don’t forget the free Monday afternoon tutorials, complete with biscuits to feed hungry minds! In addition, a number of students have begun using the free yourtutor online service provided through the Cairns Library. This provides invaluable help after hours by linking students directly with a subject-specific tutor for individual conservations about homework, assignments, exam preparation and study questions. For assistance with accessing this service, please contact me or see Ms Deb Kerlin in Learning Support.

A couple of upcoming events that are important to note are the Australian Maths Competition on August 4th, and a visit by a lecturer from JCU’s Faculty of Science and Technology. The Australian Maths competition provides an excellent opportunity for students to challenge themselves and others across the nation, with those high- achieving students receiving recognition and prizes. Many students have already enrolled, and if you would like your son or daughter to participate, please contact me. Secondly, students in Extension Maths/Science and Senior Science and Maths B classes will hear about pathways in Science and Engineering beyond high school when Ms Kylie Anderson from JCU visits later this term. This will provide a perfect opportunity for students to find out directly about careers in these fields and what subjects at school are required for entry to the relevant courses.

Finally, Year 10’s will soon be considering their options for next year as subject selection approaches next term. It is therefore very important that students and parents give due consideration to the level and type of Maths needed for entry into the different senior maths streams. I will be speaking with students early next term, but if you would like to find out more please contact me by phone on 4058 4325 or via email: [email protected]. YEAR 12 OUTDOOR EDUCATION TULLY RIVER CAMP 18 – 20 May, 2011

After two training days in the Barron River, honing their swimming and rescuing skills in white water, our Year 12 OED students took on the Tully River for three days to complete their major Term 2 assessment. Students are trained in swiftwater rescue principles in much the same way as the rescue crews we saw on television operating during the recent Brisbane and Toowoomba floods. They learn how to swim both defensively and aggressively through grade 1-3 rapids and to rescue each other out of them by either swimming or throw bagging with ropes. It is a really ‘full on’ experience, which definitely challenges them mentally, physically and emotionally and I am pleased to report that this year’s cohort passed with ‘flying colours’.

Unfortunately, barring about an hour of random sunshine on day two, we copped three straight days of rain and wind to go with the freezing cold mountain river water, which meant even our German exchange students were feeling cold each day. The students battled on bravely through the elements though to complete their training, which made me very proud. These truly are ordinary kids doing extraordinary things.

The Tully River is a majestic body of water running through world heritage listed rainforest hundreds of thousands of years old. It is as beautiful as it is wild and dangerous though, and our students need to be trained properly before they enter it. On the first day of camp they spend most of their time swimming it and rescuing each other out of it. There are always some bumps, bruises, cuts and grazes to go with the exercise. This year we had some fantastic swimmers in the group who excelled in the difficult white water environment. Todd Alderdice, Paul Althans, Luke Whitfield, Manuel Pricoco and Nicole Koffu were consistently outstanding in their swimming. What was pleasing though was the improvement shown in swimming and bagging ability over the three days by all students. Students like Cathy Brooks, Sam Kahsnitz, India Stille and Alexandra Thiel showed amazing improvement over the duration of the camp.

On the second day we take the students white water rafting down the Grade 4, death defying rapids on the upper Tully with local company Raging Thunder. This is an incredible, adrenaline fueled experience which is probably the camp highlight for most students. Manuel, Luke and Cathy can attest to just how scary it is when you come out of your boat in a big rapid! After the rafting, we went back to our training and finished day 2 swimming a big grade 3 rapid. A special mention to Sam, Nicole, India Grayson, Alexandra, Kaitlyn O’Brien, Franzi Kirchner, India Stille who all showed real bravery to conquer this ‘beast’ in the face of adversity. Paul, Luke, Cathy, Matthias Fiedler, Manuel and Todd then took it on in a tyre tube with great success.

On the last day, the students were up at 5.45am in the pitch dark, pulling on their wet gear to go back to the river one last time and complete a rescue scenario involving tying a tension line across the river. They completed the task in record time under the outstanding leadership of Sam. Special mention to the girls - India Stille and Alexandra on anchors, and Kaitlyn, Cathy and Franzi on the Z Rig – who did a great job. Matthias, India Grayson, Luke, Todd and Paul were also fantastic overseeing the whole operation.

All in all, a fabulous camp with a sensational group of students. I hope you enjoyed it guys. Mr.Hancock and myself couldn’t be happier with the application and endeavour you all showed under trying conditions. You did yourselves proud – well done!

NORTHERN STATES CUP UNDER 14 AFL CHAMPIONSHIPS Monday 16 May, 2011 Congratulations to the Year 8 and 9 boys who represented the school in the Northern States Cup. Unfortunately we weren’t successful in progressing through to the semi finals but it was a brave effort by the boys considering we were undermanned in both games.

Game 1 – Smithfield SHS 3-0-18 defeated by St Andrews 4-5-29 Goals – Luke Macey, Basil Bulkan, Joel Karwan Best Players – Basil Bulkan, Joel Karwan, Korjan Eraton

We started slowly and were down by a couple goals at halftime but the boys fought back well to win the second half. We certainly had our chances to win the game, with plenty of forward 40m entries but dropped marks and a lack of urgency to ‘crumb’ the loose ball when it hit the ground cost us dearly in the end. Having one player short certainly didn’t help either and then Gene De Andrade broke his collar bone five minutes from the end and we were two players down. In the end they just had too much run for us with the extra players but it was a brave effort from the boys.

Game 2 – Smithfield SHS 3-4-22 defeated by Mossman 9-2-56 Goals – Sam Meadows, Daniel Smith, Joel Karwan Best Players – Korjan Eraton, Joel Karwan, Oat Mastus, Rhylee Herd

Two men down against a very quick and effective Mossman pack of ‘on ballers’ and the game was virtually over by halftime. Profligacy in front of goal cost us to some degree but these guys were just too fast and used the ball better than we did on the night. In the end we just ran out of legs.

All things considered, I have been impressed by the endeavour and commitment of the boys in training so far this semester and I think there is a lot of talent there for us to build on for our senior years of football with this group. Keep working hard at your skills and fitness, keep playing footy and let’s keep this great little group together over the next few years.

EDUCATION QUEENSLAND INTERNATIONAL - STUDENTS My name is Paul Althans I am a German international student, 16 years old and live near Frankfurt. To spend time with my friends is one of the most important things for me. So since I made some friends over here, I am really enjoying my stay. I came to this 1 term in Australia to connect with people, make friends and experience the lifestyle of this culture. I am looking forward to my time at Smithfield State High School.

Hello! My name is India Stille and I am 15 years old. Usually I live in Hamburg, a city in Northern Germany; in the moment I live in Yorkeys Knob in a lovely host family. The reason why I wanted to do a stay abroad in general is, that I want to learn a new culture, new people and a new way of life. It is a way to get more self-confident and independent. Why have I chosen Australia? My parents told me much about their vacations in Australia about the friendliness of the people, the wonderful nature and the easy-going lifestyle. Added to that is the distance to home and the good weather attractive to me. So I have chosen Australia - and I don’t regret it, because everything is true!

Hi! My name is Alexandra Thiel, I'm 16 and I'm an international student from Germany. I made the decision to spend five month in Australia a long time ago, because I’ve heard a lot about the Australian culture and the wildlife, which is really different to Germany. That makes me curious and I’m really happy to have the chance to discover the country, the people and especially the Australian way of life. I'm really looking forward to spend the next five month with you.

University Open Day

James Cook University is hosting an Open Day on 13 July for Year 12 students who want to go to university and who are considering attending our local facility, or the campus in Townsville. Year 12 students who are interested in attending the open day have been given permission forms and returned to the Guidance Office so that numbers will be finalised.

FROM THE CHAPLAIN My Chappy Day was held on Saturday 21 May and was a big boost for Chaplains across our FNQ region. Funds were raised and radio advertising for chaplaincy made all the effort worth it. We thank McDonalds for partnering with us to make the day a success.

At Smithfield Maccas, I had the support of both staff and students. Special thanks must go to Lisa Courtney, Jenny Wilson and Peter Marconi who helped on the day. I was also very ablely assisted by a number of very talented students who were whizzes with ballooning and face painting. These were Lucy Crossley, Savi McGrath and Jordan Groeneveld. These students stayed all day to create their magic. Simon Blizzard and ex student Brett Sweeney were also a fantastic help in distributing the tickets on the day.

In total we raised $700 for the SSHS chaplaincy service. I also raffled a bike donated by Discovery Cycles and one of our Year 12 boys was the winner on that beauty. Thanks for all the support given during the preceding week and on the day and to all those who bought a burger, I thank you.

Carla.
