It was the 15th of January on a Saturday morning with fifty-one Smithfield students and five teachers ready to catch the plane to a country that most of them have always dreamed of travelling to. With a kiss

on the cheek and a “see you in a week and be safe” we were all ready for take-off. After a seven and a half hour flight we had arrived, everyone was excited and ready for the six hour bus trip to follow on with our

journey.

We soon arrived at Hotel Hakuba and it was lights out and time to get some sleep.

Welcome to the new school year everyone and in particular, to our new families and students. I am struggling to recall a more tragic and disruptive January/February period. My thoughts and best wishes go out to all who have suffered major heartache throughout this period. The impact is much worse just south of us, but we have all been affected in some way. The good news for our school is that minimal damage was sustained during the cyclone. Let’s begin 2011 by recapping some of the highlights/major news from 2010:

♦ Smithfield has a permanent Principal again. I am both honoured and humbled to accept this position. We will further stabilise the leadership of the school when a permanent Deputy Principal is appointed for Semester II. Until then Sharon Jones is Acting DP. Can I also acknowledge the great work Carole Houston has done over the last two years as Acting DP. Carole is expecting a baby in six weeks and will take leave prior to the end of Term 1. You will see further staffing updates for 2011.

♦ Great results at the end of the year. 96% of our Year 12s exited with either an OP, QCE or a recognised Vocat iona l Certificate! Outstanding OP results for many of our Year 12 students. Ben Seymour was our OP1 and we had four OP2, one OP3, five OP4 and three OP5’s. Our OP 1–10 results was on par with State averages.

♦ Across the school we are lifting achievements, 79% of student results are at a C (pass) level or better. This year we are aiming to increase this to 85%.

♦ Four of our Science laboratories have been upgraded and are in use. Two more rooms are to be finished this term.

For 2011 our goal is clear - the continuous improvement of learning outcomes across the school. To this end, I want to see Smithfield High positioned as a first choice high performing school for all families in our catchment area. I will detail specific programs, etc throughout the year in this column and in my new BLOG!! Read on…. Before the end of February I will have a PRINCIPAL’S BLOG attached to our school website. The blog will enable me to post regular updates on school news/highlights, etc. I can also attach photos, videos and website links to this. I will certainly be challenged with the ICT demands and look forward to any feedback from you as to its usefulness. Other start of the year messages:

♦ We are on track to reach our enrolment prediction of 822 students so there should not be any staffing disruptions this term.

♦ The Senior Learning Academy has ’kicked off’ in Year 11 with twenty-nine students enrolled in this program. We will be well supported by James Cook University throughout this Pilot Program. I am sure all the students involved will excel.

♦ Could I remind all families of the value and importance of signing up and paying for the Resource Contributions Scheme. Whilst we will not withhold vital learn ing resources f rom students who are not in the scheme, this means that resources not provided by SSHS will need to be acquired by the family, at a much higher cost.

Quite simply, joining the Resource Contributions Scheme is the best way to ensure your child gets all the materials they need for a good education.

Note from the P&C Dear Parents, Carers and friends of Smithfield State High School

Welcome to the 2011 school year at Smithfield State High School to all new and returning families. To all new families congratulations on choosing Smithfield State High School for your child’s senior school education. I hope your child enjoys their years at our school.

The Parents and Citizens Association plays an important role in the school community. We provide a link between the parents and the school administration. We are kept informed on school issues and have the opportunity to have our say on these matters. We determine how the money from the building fund and the school tuckshop should be allocated.

To all new and continuing parents please consider coming along to some of our meetings and have a look at what it’s all about. Our meetings are held monthly on the third Wednesday of the month. Our first meeting for this year is Wednesday 16 February at 7pm and our AGM will be held on Wednesday 16 March.

The beginning of the school year is a very busy time and I would urge all families to be very careful when driving in the vicinity of the school as there is a lot of traffic. Also please remind your children to be careful when riding to school and to always wear their helmets as accidents can happen. With the development that is occurring around Smithfield State High School the P&C is considering c r e a t i n g a R o a d S a f e t y Subcommittee. If you are interested in this issue or any other school issue please come along to our meeting. Regards Mandy Mayers Secretary Smithfield State High School P&C Association 0429 946 568

RESOURCE CENTRE NEWS Welcome to 2011 Our new team staffing the library are willing and able to help you solve all of your information problems. Ms Sliskovic (HOD Teaching & Learning) is now located in the Library office. Mrs Robins (Teacher-Librarian), Ms Andersen, and Mrs Sheppard will be available at different times during the week to assist you. We are looking forward to learning how to be efficient information processors together with students and staff. Watch this space as we will be updating the library webpages with new resources, research frameworks, onl ine applications and helpful links to both general reference and subject specific resources. Our most exciting new development is the creation of a searchable Blog so that we can update you regularly with recent trends and tools. Visit the Resource Centre Blog from the school homepage or - "What's New" via the Resource Centre pages to read the current blog post and to search the archives. Donation of Furniture A big thank you to the Ottaway family who donated a second-hand lounge suite to us, until we have our next facilities upgrade. The comfy furniture has been a big hit with all students. Information Challenge #1 How technologically savvy are you? Can you recognize a QR code when you see one on the street or in a magazine? If you can access a QR scanner app for an iphone/smartphone, scan the code below and be the first student or staff member to recount the information t o M r s Robins?

ACCIDENT INSURANCE COVER FOR STUDENTS Some school activities and physical education, particularly contact sports, carry inherent risks of injury. Parents are advised that the Department of Education and Training does not have Student Accident Insurance cover for students. Therefore, if your child is injured at school as a result of an accident or incident, all costs associated with the injury, including medical costs, are the responsibility of the child, parent or caregiver. Some incidental medical costs may be covered by Medicare. If parents have private health insurance, some costs may also be covered through the private health insurance. Any other costs would be borne by the parents. Student Accident Insurance is an insurance policy that pays certain benefits in certain circumstances should your child have an accident. It is a personal decision for parents as to the types and levels of private insurance they arrange to cover their child for any accidental injury that may occur. Parents should contact their insurer or an approved Australian insurance broker if they choose to take out student personal accident insurance cover for their child.

And welcome back to all students and particularly students new to Smithfield State High School. My name is Glen Collis, and I will be relieving as the Head of Mathematics for Term 1, whilst Mr Greg Martin enjoys some well deserved Long Service Leave. By now, all students should be developing a regular routine of revision and consolidation of work at home. Each teacher sets homework regularly throughout the week, which students record in their diaries. Equally importantly, students should also be allocating some time to revising their notes from that day. Parents and guardians, please check your child’s notebook and diaries regularly. If your son or daughter can explain, in their own words, the concepts covered that day, they will have formed a good understanding of the work. Generally, it is expected that Years 8-10 spend approximately 15-20 minutes and Seniors, 20-30 minutes a night, on the days they have mathematics. This will be greater when assignments are due. Your son or daughter may like to access a detailed semester planner outlining the course topics and assessment from the curriculum drive at school. Additionally, they should also now have the details of assessments scheduled for this semester written into their diary. Please take time to revise this with your son/daughter and contact their class teacher or myself should you wish any further clarification. Students and parents can also assist greatly with the learning process by ensuring that students attend class with all the required materials. In addition to their writing materials and notebook, all students must bring their textbook, diary and scientific calculator to each class. Senior students studying Maths B and C will require a graphics calculator.

All junior students have been placed in maths classes based on their d e m o n s t r a t e d a b i l i t y a n d achievement results from last year. Some have also sat diagnostic tests to further refine their selection for the most appropriate class. The aim of this is to allow each student to maximise his/her knowledge and skills in a class best suited to their current needs. Based on the strengths and weaknesses of a class, class teachers will cover the appropriate content and associated procedures to maximise student outcomes. If necessary, future changes to your son’s/daughter’s classroom allocation may occur based on subsequent assessment results. As in prev ious years, the Mathematics Faculty offers free tu tor ing every Monday afternoon from 2.30 – 3.30pm in E002. This is an invaluable opportunity for students to receive assistance on difficult concepts and questions and this generally is reflected in improved grades for regular attendees. I strongly encourage all students who are struggling with any part of their mathematics learning to attend at least one of these tutorials. Finally, I’d like to publicise a couple of mathematical opportunities that students may like to test their mettle against this semester:

♦ A u s t r a l i a n I n f o r m a t i c s Competition for those students (Yrs 8-12) with an interest in computer programming or mathematics

♦ Mathematics Enrichment and Challenge stages for students (Yrs 8-10, individual and team) who enjoy lateral thinking and problem-solving type questions.

♦ Australian Statistics Poster competition (Yrs 8-12, teams) with cash prizes for state winners.

GREETINGS FROM THE MATHEMATICS FACULTY...

I’ll be speaking to students about these over the next few weeks, and I ask all parents and guardians to encourage their child to apply for any of these if interested. Please feel free to contact me by phone on 4058 4325 or via email: [email protected], if you have any questions. Glen Collis Head of Mathematics Department

CREATING OUR FUTURECREATING OUR FUTURE

For the next few days it was just snowboarding and skiing for the students and teachers of Smithfield High School. With one broken collarbone, a sore wrist, sore knee and many cases of Flu it soon came to an end. With everyone heading out to a Japanese dinner it was something different and new for everyone to try. Cooking your own food, while you’re sitting on the floor, was a challenge for everyone.

The last day was spent shopping and exploring the fun and interesting streets of Tokyo, from crazy outfits to drag queens, Tokyo was a truly unforgettable part of our trip.

Arriving in Cairns everyone looked tired and just wanted to sleep. Overall our trip was perfect and I would recommend everyone do it because it’s the most fun you will have and you come home closer with everyone and become one big family.

Thank you to all the teachers who put this together for us. It has taught everyone about different cultures and has brought everyone closer.

SENIOR CITIZEN’S CONCERT On Tuesday 7 December, during the last week of school 2010, Smithfield State High School hosted the Senior Citizens Christmas Concert. Once again the event was a huge success with approximately one hundred and fifty clients from the district’s nursing homes and senior relatives of our school community. Distinguished guests included Warren Entsch, Steve Wettenhall and Rotary’s Tom Booy. A huge thanks go to everyone who helped with the organisation and created such a positive happy occasion. We would also like to thank the Cairns community for donating so kindly to our concert to help make it such a huge success. Staff and students performed songs, danced and played music to entertain. Hospitality students and teachers cooked up a delicious morning tea. And Santa came to greet everyone in his usual style.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS:

SMITHFIELD HIGH GOES GLOBAL! Here at Smithfield State High School we are proud to offer an excellent International Student Program to overseas students wishing to expand their knowledge of other cultures and languages. We are delighted to welcome seven international students into our school community this term. Five students from Germany, one from Austria and one from USA have joined us, spread across Years 9, 10 and 11. The length of their stay with us ranges from one term to the whole year. They will be introducing themselves via our newsletter, please say hello to them as you see them around the school and make them feel welcome. Hi, my name’s Nicole but my friends

call me Nikki. I’m from Austria and I’m 15 years old. I’m turning 16 in April so I’ll be celebrating my birthday in Oz, which is so

cool. I love spending time with friends, travelling, music, thunderstorms, gossip and fashion magazines, good books and, of course, shoes ☺ When I grow up I’d really love to work as an editor for Elle magazine. I’m Franziska from Hamburg in Germany and I’m 16 years old. I will stay at Smithfield State High School for two terms. I came to Australia to experience something new, to meet new people and to live their way of life. I’m looking forward to having a good time in Australia.

My name is Manuel Pricoco, I’m 15 years old and from Germany. I’m staying here for two terms and am living in Trinity

Beach. My hobbies are lots of sports like skiing, tennis or soccer but I enjoy reading, watching DVDs, travelling and meeting friends as well. My friends call me mainly Manu.

My name is Chris. I’m 15 and I come from Germany. My parents are originally Chinese but I was born in Germany. I’m staying here for three months. I really like travelling and that’s one of the reasons why I chose Australia. My hobbies are European handball, guitar and piano.

Hi, my name is Matthias, I’m from Germany and I stay here in Australia for one whole year. I live in Trinity Park very close to the school so I can

sleep very long every morning ☺ If you want to know, I’ve got blonde hair, blue eyes and I’m 174 cms tall and I LOVE Tim Tams. My hobbies are diving (I’ve got my diver’s licence), water skiing, swimming, playing soccer, meeting with friends etc. If you want to know more about me or something just add me on Facebook ☺

Hi I’m Lauren Barry and I’m from beautiful southern California where the grass is always green and the sun is always shining.

I like to travel, which is one of the many reasons I came to Australia. California isn’t just about shopping and going to the beach as some may think. I also enjoy cheerleading, dancing, playing lacrosse and listening to music while walking my dog along the rocky cliffs. I’m very grateful I was given the opportunity to have this wonderful experience to bring part of Australia’s culture back with me. My stay so far has been remarkable and I hope that I will have many memories to come.

Hey guys, my name is Svea and I’m one of the seven international students at your school. I am from Recklinghausen, this is a small city in the Ruhr area in

Germany. In my free time I often meet my friends or I do a lot of sports. See you soon.

EQI Homestay If you are interested, or know someone who may be, please contact Cassandra Quirk. Why Host?
