In what was the most successful fall season in many years for Oneonta State athletics it culminated with the collegeʼs first team national champion-ship when the womenʼs soccer team defeated the University of Chicago 2-1 in overtime on Nov. 30. All but one fall team finished with a winning record overall and the field hockey team made it two teams that played in the postseason this fall. The fall produced three All-Americans, one Confer-ence Coach of the Year and two Regional Coaches of the Year.

Women’s Soccer (21-1-3)

Every fall for the past five years the question is asked, “Is this the year the women break through and reach the pinnacle of team suc-cess in the NCAA tournament?” The preseason outlook pointed to a strong possibility with the fact that all 11 starters were returning from the previous season that pro-duced a 20-3-1 record. The leaders of the squad were the five seniors who had been together since they were freshmen. Their goal from the beginning was to win a national championship and now it was their op-portunity to make this goal a reality. The season began on the road at NYU on Aug. 31 and Oneonta came away with a 1-0 victory. Junior Brooke Davis (Grand Gorge, NY/Stamford) netted the first of her team-best six game-winning goals in leading the Red Dragons to the win. For Davis, her late-game heroics would show true during Oneontaʼs late season run to the NCAA title. During the month of September the team put together a record of 7-0-2 including capturing the Mayorʼs Cup and Red Dragon Cup tournaments. Two featured games for the Red Dragons during the month were against the College of New Jersey and Geneseo. Oneonta had never beaten TCNJ prior to this season and they faced them in their own tournament on Sep. 13. Oneonta took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Alissa Karcz (S. Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) in the ninth minute. The visitors tied the game midway through the second half before senior Kelly Stevens (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) scored the game-winner in the 78th minute. The Geneseo game was the much anticipated rematch of the 2002 SUNYAC final in which the game was decided on penalty kicks. This game would be no different than the year before as the game ended in a 0-0 tie to force penalty kicks for SUNYAC tie-breaking pur-

poses. Oneonta would win the tiebreaker 4-2 to secure the top spot in the conference that they wouldnʼt relinquish. The Red Dragons continued its unbeaten run to start the season and were 14-0-2 entering their game at home against Ithaca on Oct. 25. The Bombers started quickly and scored in the fourth minute to grab an early lead. Six minutes later junior Cristina Gaspar (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) tied the game on a corner kick. The visitors would take the lead for good in the 52nd minute of the game as they

handed Oneonta a 2-1 loss for its only blemish on the season record. In the SUNYAC Tournament it would be Davis who would lead the Red Dragons to its fifth straight title and into the NCAA tourna-ment. In the two wins during the tournament Davis would score the opening goal in two, 2-0 wins against Brockport and Geneseo. In the championship game against Geneseo the Red Dragons dominated from the opening whistle and finished the game with a 20-5 shot advantage. Oneonta received a bye into the regional championships to be hosted by Union and their first opponent was Ithaca who was the only team to defeat the Red Dragons during the season. The game was a battle with both teams playing close defensively. The Red Dragons did have an overall advantage in shots, but were unable to put any behind the Ithaca keeper. The ended in a 0-0 tie and eventually made it

RANIERI SELECTED AS REGIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR

After completing its greatest season in the history of the womenʼs soc-cer program, head coach Tracey Ranieri was selected as the NSCAA New York/Northeast Regional Coach of the Year. This is the first time in her 14-year coach-ing career that she has been recognized by the NSCAA. Ranieriʼs name will now appear on the national ballot for selection as national coach of the year. “What a great honor for our pro-gram,” said Ranieri. “I am still so proud of the players for winning a national championship last weekend and I share this award with them. They have worked so hard and they have been so committed

to making our program the best in the country that it makes my job easier as a coach.” This season the Red Dragons finished with a program record 21 wins against one loss and three ties. They won their fifth consecutive SUNYAC title to earn the automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. In the tournament Oneonta tied Ithaca 0-0 before advancing 3-2 in penalty kicks and then defeated Union 1-0 to win the New York Region championship. I the quarterfinals they handed Scranton its only loss of the season in a 1-0 victory in overtime. The national semifinals Oneonta defeated the College of New Jersey 2-1 before pulling out a thrilling 2-1 overtime win against the University of Chicago in the national championship game. Ranieri just completed her 13th year at Oneonta State and has compiled a record of 176-74-20. She has directed her team to five straight SUNYAC titles and six overall while making six appearances in the NCAA tournament. Prior to this coaching honor she has earned Coach of the Year honors in the SUNYAC four times and from the New York State Womenʼs Collegiate Athletic Association once. Last week she was selected as Co-Coach of the Year by the NYSWCAA sharing the honor with Mindy Quigg of Ithaca College.

to penalty kicks where the game would be decided. The Red Dragons converted its first three kicks while sophomore goalie Laura Morcone (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) stopped the first two shots by the Bombers. Leading 3-2, Ithaca had the final kick to try and extend the game to an extra shootout, but the ball went wide of the goal and it al-lowed Oneonta to advance into the championship game for the second time in the last four years. In the championship game junior Tricia Jaeger (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) scored on a restart in the 78th minute of play to lift the Red Dragons to a 1-0 win. Oneonta now found itself in the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time ever and had the luxury of playing at home. Their opponent was Scranton who was the only unbeaten team left in Div. III and who entered the game allowing only two goals all year. The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie to force another overtime game for the Red Dragons. Again it was Davis coming up with the big goal in the second overtime to give Oneonta a 1-0 win and move them into the national semifinals. Oneonta received word that they would be hosting the national championship weekend from the NCAA making it the first time an event like this had been on the campus. The games would be played on the Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend, which meant the team would have to practice while the rest of the college was closed. The weather forecast was not very promising either with a measurable snow expected for the opening day. The three other teams

that advanced to the weekend were TCNJ, DePauw University and the University of Chi-cago. Oneonta was matched against TCNJ, which would be the second time this season that they would face thee Lions. While itʼs almost impossible to defeat TCNJ once, twice is beyond compre-hension. Oneonta

found themselves behind 1-0 early in the first half and continued to trail entering thee 32nd minute. It was at this time in the game that the Red Dragons tied the game on a restart. Sophomore Sarah Tauber (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream North) sent a perfect service into the box where Karcz was able to get her head on it an redirect it enough to get it by the TCNJ keeper. The game remained tied until the 79th minute where it was Davis once again who scored the game-winner. The goal was set up when freshman Patricia DiMichele (Centereach, NY/Centereach) stole the ball from a TCNJ defender and tracked it down. She then sent a ball across that Davis got her head on and pushed it by the Lions ̓keeper. In the national championship game Oneonta played the Uni-versity of Chicago who had defeated DePauw 2-1 in overtime in their semifinal game. Chicago had eliminated Oneonta the year before in the Central Regional semifinals 2-1 in overtime to end the Red Dragons ̓season. In this contest the score would come out the same, but in favor of Oneonta as they pulled out a dramatic win. Trailing 1-0 with less than one minute to play in the game there was a foul called on Chicago about 30 yards out and near the sideline. With the clock continuing to count down senior Rose Velan (Stamford, NY/Chazy Central) had the sense to quickly put thee ball down and serve it into the box. With play-ers from both teams disorganized the Chicago keeper tried to play the ball, but it bounced off of her body where it laid loose. It was then that Davis collected the loose ball and blasted a ball that found the back of

the goal for the game-tying goal with 29 seconds left. Overtime didnʼt last long as a loose ball early in the first extra period found its way to senior Sanada Mujanovic (Centereach, NY/Centereach) who was crossing the ball in the hopes that someone would be charging to the back post. Instead the ball caught the netting just inside the left goal post near the cross bar for the decisive goal and a national championship for the Red Dragons. Davis was selected as the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the tournament while Jaeger, Morcone and senior Amanda LaPolla (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) were all named to the All-Tourna-ment Team.

Field Hockey (15-8)

The field hockey team had its best season since 1990 as they finished with 15 wins while advancing to the semifinals of both the NYSWCAA and ECAC Mid-Atlantic tournaments. The team produced its first All-American since 1992 and head coach, Michele Dombrowski, was selected as the Regional Coach of the Year. The season started slowly for Oneonta as they dropped their first two games of the season. Both games were lost in overtime and both were on the road. The season opening loss came at Rensselaer while the second overtime loss was at Utica College. The Red Dragons registered its first win of the season over perennial region power St. Lawrence in the opening game of the Red Dragon Field Hockey Classic. Sophomore Kerry Birnstill (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) scored the eventual game-winner in the 49th minute as the Red Dragons held off a late charge by the Saints. In the champion-ship game of the tournament Oneonta easily defeated Eastern Connecti-cut 3-0 to capture the title. Junior Brynne Hoover (Walton, NY/Walton) was selected as the tournament MVP after registering one assist and

being the offensive catalyst for the Oneonta attack for the two games. After a 4-3 win against New Paltz to open the SUNYAC portion of the sched-ule Oneonta was ready to face Cortland. Oneonta battled its rival to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation, but went on to lose 2-1 for its third overtime defeat of the early season. Oneonta would lose two of its next three games to end the month of September 4-5 overall. October was a new month and a chance to get to work if the team was to have any hopes of making the postseason. The Red Dragons made the most of the month registering a perfect 9-0 record including four wins in overtime. Two of their overtime games went to stroke play where Oneonta defeated Geneseo in sudden death strokes and then defeated Nazareth in the first period of strokes. The Red Dragons finished Octo-ber with a record of 13-5 and looking strong entering the final stretch. The Red Dragons played five games in November, four of which were in postseason tournaments. Oneonta hosted Elmira in an NYSWCAA quarterfinal game on the 5th and won 2-1. Senior Jenn Miller (Chestertown, NY/North Warren) netted the game-winning goal for the Red Dragons. Unfortunately the run in the State tournament would come to an end in the semifinals when Oneonta was defeated 3-1 by Utica. Oneontaʼs season performance earned them a berth into the ECAC tournament where they received the eighth and final spot. Their

The postseason honors kept coming for the field hockey team this fall when the National Field Hockey Coaches Association selected its Regional Coaches of the Year and Michele Dombrowski found herself on the list of the six who were chosen in Div. III. She was selected as the Dita/NFHCA North Atlantic Re-gion Coach of the Year and she is now eligible for National Coach of the Year honors, which will be announced at the NFHCA Awards Luncheon on Jan. 10 in Baltimore, Md. “Iʼm very excited and honored

to be chosen to receive this award,” said Dombrowski, who just completed her sixth season at Oneonta. “I share this award with my team because they have worked hard to raise our program to the next level during the last six years.” The Red Dragons completed its best season since 1990 when they finished 15-8 this fall. They qualified as the eighth seed in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament and knocked off top-seeded William Smith in the quarterfinals before losing to Ursinus in the semifinals. This yearʼs team finished second in the SUNYAC with a 4-1 record for a second straight year. Last fall the team finished 8-9 overall and Dombrowski garnered conference Coach of the Year honors after going from last place to second place in the SUNYAC. Dombrowski came to Oneonta in 1998 after a two-year stint as the assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Smith (MA) College. She holds a masterʼs degree in Exercise & Sport Studies from Smith and is also on the staff for summer camps at Smith, Hartwick and Fitchburg (MA) State. Dombrowski is a 1996 graduate of Goucher College where she is the career leader in goals scored and points for the field hockey program. She was selected as an All-American twice and was a four-time South Region All-American forward. Dombrowski helped lead the Gophers to two straight NCAA Div. III appearances during her four years. She was also se-lected as the GTE Fall/Winter At-Large Academic All-American of the Year in the College Division for her outstanding achievements in the classroom.

first game would be at William Smith where the Red Dragons pulled out a 1-0 win in overtime. Again it was Miller who came up with the decisive goal for Oneonta. In the semifinals Oneontaʼs season came to an end when they defeated 4-3 by host Ursinus.

Men’s Soccer (10-2-6)

The 2003 menʼs soccer season was a comeback year of sorts after a disappointing 2002 campaign. The program had a familiar face as its new coach as longtime assistant Iain Byrne took over the program as its interim coach. The team returned a large senior class and nine starters overall, so the prospects of a winning season were good. The team finished with its best winning percentage in nearly 30 years while ending the year with a 12-game unbeaten streak, which is the longest since the 1966-67 seasons. The team also was in the top five in the regional coaches poll all season and was receiving votes for the national coaches poll from the beginning of October until the end of the season. The year began with a convincing 3-0 win against St. Bo-naventure at home. Senior Jme Amoako (Brooklyn, NY/Friends) scored all three goals for Oneonta in the victory. Oneonta followed that season-opening win with a 2-1 victory over Siena in the first road game of the season to begin 2003 2-0. In the Mayorʼs Cup tournament at Hartwick the Red Dragons earned a split of its two games. They were defeated in the opener 2-1 by Hofstra, but then rallied and took a 1-0 win against nationally ranked Pittsburgh on the final day. The next weekend Oneonta went to the Midwest for a tournament at Northern Illinois University. They came away with a tie and a loss to make their record 3-2-1 through the first six games of the season. The loss to Loyola University of Chicago on the second day of the tournament would be the last time the Red Dragons would record a loss for the year. During their unbeaten streak Oneonta would win its own Invitational and tie Binghamton and Florida International, both of which would qualify for the NCAA tournament. Binghamton won the America East while FIU won the Atlantic Soccer Conference, which Oneonta plays in. The highlight game of the year was the regular season meet-ing between the Red Dragons and Hartwick on Homecoming Saturday. Nearly 1,200 fans turned out to watch the battle between former coach, Ian McIntyre and his former assistant Byrne. Both teams had their chances, but the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Senior goalkeeper Jack Potter (Liverpool, England/Liverpool Blue Coat) had the best season of his three-year career at Oneonta. His 10 shutouts tied the single season record, which was set in 1990. He finished with a 0.46 goals against average, which is second best all-time for a single season while putting him near the top in Div. I amongst keepers. His postseason honors included being a first team selection for both the Atlantic Soccer Conference and in the New York Region.

Cross Country

The menʼs and womenʼs cross country teams continued to build this fall on last yearʼs successes. Both teams performed well throughout the season, which culminated in a tremendous showing at the ECAC championship meet. The men were powered by a nucleus of young runners while the women used an outstanding crop of freshmen to lead the way in 2003. With 11 freshmen and sophomores on the womenʼs roster and 14 of the same on the menʼs team, both teams knew they had their work cut out for them against experienced teams each week. The most

pleasant surprise of the fall on the womenʼs side was that it was the freshmen leading the pack and keeping the Red Dragons competi-tive. The men relied on seniors Dan Verdi (Savannah, NY/Clyde-Savannah) and Brian Suozzo (Franklin, NY/Franklin) along with junior Bryan Reles (Cicero, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse) to carry the squad. The first three weeks of the season saw both teams competing at smaller invitation-als, which included the Oneonta Invitational as a dry run for the conference champion-ships that the Red Dragons were hosting

later in the season. During these initial meets freshmen Melissa Wida (Pine City, NY/Elmira Southside) emerged as the top runner on the womenʼs side. The two teams continued to get stronger during the early part of October in preparation for the SUNYAC meet. The women had a great showing at the Hamilton Invitational during the second Saturday of the month. The ladies finished fifth overall out of 15 competing teams with Wida leading the way in 19th place. Two weeks later at the conference championship she would become the first female in the history of the program to earn All-Confer-ence honors when she placed 13th overall in helping to lead Oneonta to a sixth place finish as a team. The men did not do as well as they would have hoped at the SUNYAC meet as they finished sixth overall, but were hoping to run well enough for fourth. The meet of the year for both teams was definitely the ECAC meet hosted by Tufts. The men were 7th overall out of 33 teams while the women were 13th out of 31 teams. Every man and women who competed on the day ran their best time of the season. The men were led by Verdi and sophomore Joe Melanson (Montour Falls, NY/Odessa-Montour) who were 17th and 26th respectively. The women were led by freshman Mallory Baughman (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) who was 59th overall. Both teams finished in the second half of the pack at the Atlantic Regional meet at Letchworth State Park in Geneva, N.Y. to end the season.

Volleyball (26-16)

The motto for this yearʼs edition of Oneonta State volleyball was “Round 2” meaning that the teamʼs goal was to get back to the NCAA tournament and advance to the second round. In 2002 the Red Dragons had won its first ever SUNYAC title to earn the berth to the NCAA tournament, but were eliminated by NYU in the Regional semi-finals. As it turned out the team would make it back to the conference championship match, but have their season ended by Cortland. The 2003 season began as it has the previous three years by hosting the Red Dragon Invitational. Oneonta won its two matches on the opening day easily over Hartwick and Keuka to advance into the championship bracket on day two. The next day the Red Dragons would fall to NYU in three straight games before falling to Nazareth in five games to finish fourth overall. Senior Lacey Musso (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) and junior Cassandra Auth (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport) were selected to the All-Tournament Team. The month of September was not kind to Oneonta who fin-ished with a combined 6-8 record overall. Four of the teamʼs victories came at the end of the month at the first weekend of SUNYAC pool play at Plattsburgh. Oneonta was able to position themselves into the second

spot right behind Cortland in hopes of over-taking them in October for the top seed. The month of October proved to be a much better month for the Red Dragons who rang up an impressive 16-2 record. Their victories included winning both the Oneonta Invitational and Oswego Invitational during the month while finishing second at the Colorado College Invitational. Musso was selected as the SUNYAC Player of the Week after leading the Red Dragons at Oswego. The final loss of the month came to Cortland at SUNYAC pool play 2 at New Paltz, which meant second place in the East. The last two weeks of the season Oneonta went 2-4 including an 0-2 showing at the NYSWCAA tournament hosted by St. Lawrence during the first weekend of Noovember. At the conference tourna-ment the Red Dragons defeated Geneseo and Fredonia before falling to Cortland in four games. Fredonia was the top seed from the West and Oneonta was able to defeat them 3-2 to advance to the champion-ship match. Musso, Auth and senior Kristine Clark (Jackson Heights, NY/St. Johnʼs Prep) were all selected the All-Tournament Team.

Women’s Tennis (4-7)

The womenʼs tennis team began the 2003 season with a new coach and a host of new players to the team. Fortunately for first-year coach Bernie Walters two of the newcomers played at the top and showed great promise for the future. Unfortunately for the team there wasnʼt much depth and the squad had to settle for its first losing season in four years. The season began with a home victory against Russell Sage by the score of 8-1. Freshman Nicole Lindell (East Greenbush,

NY/Columbia) and seniors Trudy Hud-son (Hagaman, NY/Amsterdam) and Erin Pitcher (Dolgevillle, NY/Poland Central) were all double winners for Oneonta on the day. Lindell won at first singles in straight sets without losing a game and then won at first doubles with her partner, and classmate, Aubrey Mannella (Hopewell Jct., NY/John Jay). Hudson and Pitcher won at third and fourth singles respectively and then paired to win at second doubles. After a 6-3 loss to RIT the Red Dragons bounced back with a 6-3 win against St.

John Fisher. Lindell and Mannella would both be double winners for Oneonta winning at first and second singles respectively and pairing again to win at first doubles. The team then lost four straight matches before picking up its final two wins of the fall against Plattsburgh and Potsdam. Lindell, Pam Katz (Suffern, NY/Suffern) and Lisa Seelig (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) each picked up two wins against Plattsburgh in a 6-3 win. Pitcher and Hudson were the double winners in helping to lead Oneonta to a 5-4 win against Potsdam. The season ended in mid-October with a pair of losses and a fifth place showing at the SUNYAC championships. Lindell, Hudson and Seelig were the only players to advance into the semifinal round at the conference tournament. Seelig lost in three sets while both Hudson and Lindell lost in straight sets.

BETH OPPENHEIMER RECEIVES BOGARD AWARD

2003 Graduate Earns SUNYAC Conference s̓ Highest Academic Honor

At the annual fall meeting of the State Uni-versity of New York Athletic Conference it was announced that 2003 Oneonta State graduate Lizbeth Oppenheimer (Webster, NY/Webster) was selected as the recipient of the Dr. Dolores Bogard award. The award is given annually to the most outstanding female student-athlete of the confer-ence who has demonstrated the best combination of academic and athletic excellence during the previous academic year. This honor for Op-penheimer is the culminating award that marked

one of the most accomplished careers of any student-athlete in the history of the college. With the honor, she becomes the first Oneonta State female athlete to receive this honor in the eleven years that it has been awarded. Oppenheimer, who is currently enrolled in the physical therapy pro-gram at Syracuse University, has a long list of academic and athletic accolades earned during her four years with Oneonta. She was a four-year starter for the Red Dragons ̓softball team and helped lead the program to a SUNYAC title during her sophomore year. She was a three-time Regional All-American and All-Conference selection for her on-field performance during her career. She led the team in hitting (.395), total bases (68) and slugging (.571) last spring and left the program as its all-time leader in hits (197) and runs scored (119). Her academic accolades are numerous and include being the first athlete, male or female, to be selected as a first team Academic All-American when she earned the honor this past June. During her senior year she was one of 12 students from the college to receive one of the SUNY Chancellorʼs Award for Student Excellence, which is the highest honor any student can receive from the SUNY system. She was one of only 10 females to be a recipient of an Outstand-ing Scholar-Athlete Award by the New York State Womenʼs Collegiate Athletic Association. She appeared on the SUNYAC Commissionerʼs List and All-Aca-demic Team, was a recipient of the Susan Sutton Smith and Provostʼs Award for academic excellence from the college while being inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student Honor Society.

THREE ATHLETES EARN ACADEMIC HONORSKitchen, Potter and Stevens Receive Honors for Work in the Classroom

The Academic All-District 1 Teams were announced in November for menʼs and womenʼs soccer and Oneonta State had three athletes honored including two First Team selections. Seniors Jack Potter (Liverpool, England/Liverpool Blue Coat) and Kelly Stevens (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) along with junior Luke Kitchen (Stroud, England/Marling School) all were honored for their outstanding accomplishments off the playing field. Stevens and Kitchen were both First Team selections while Potter was a Second Team selec-tion. This is the second straight year that Stevens earned District 1 honors as last year she was a Third Team selection. Stevens was co-captain of the womenʼs soccer team for a second year and helped lead the Red Dragons to a national title. She has started 88 of 91 career games and registered 14 goals and 12 assists as a midfielder. Stevens was the Oneonta State Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2002-03 to highlight her academic accolades she has accumulated to date. She is a Presidential Scholar, was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma as a junior and has been on the SUNYAC All-Academic Team and Commissionerʼs list since her freshman and sophomore years. This fall she was also selected as one of the Best and Brightest students by the college. Kitchen was the other First Team selection for Oneonta as he was se-lected to the University Division Menʼs Soccer Team. Kitchen has started every game for Oneonta as a defender since his arrival in 2001. This season he was an All-Conference selection after leading the team with five assists. Kitchenʼs academic accolades include being on the SUNYAC All-Academic Team and Commissionerʼs List for the last two years. Potter was selected to the Academic All-District 1 Second Team as a goalkeeper. Potter posted career-best numbers in leading the Red Dragons to a 10-2-6 record. He has played 1570 minutes in goal and has posted a 0.46 goals against and 10 shutouts. His goals against is the second best all-time for the menʼs soccer program while tying the record for shutouts in a season set by David Carter during the 1990 season. Potter was a First Team All-ASC selection and First Team Regional All-American in 2003. He was also the conferenceʼs Goalkeeper of the Week twice during the season. Potter has been on the SUNYAC All-Academic Team and Commis-sionerʼs List for three years and was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma last spring. The Academic All-America program is sponsored by the College Sports Information Directors of America and the district team is selected by Sports Information Directors in each respective District. To be eligible for nomination, the student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 GPA and be a starter or significant contributor to their team.

SANADA MUJANOVIC EARNS ALL AMERICA HONORSSenior Becomes First Two-Time All-American

Senior Sanada Mujanovic (Cen-tereach, NY/Centereach) was selected as a Division III All-American in womenʼs soccer for a second time during her career. She was selected as an NSCAA second team All-American making her the first soccer player in the history of womenʼs program to earn All-America honors twice. Last season she earned third team honors for her outstanding season in leading the Red Dragons to a 20-3-1 record. Earlier in December Mujanovic earned first team regional All-America honors to become eligible for selection to the national team. She had the game-winning goal to lead the Red Dragons to the national champion-

ship against the University of Chicago on Nov. 30. She finished second on the team with 24 points on eight goals and a team-best eight assists. She will leave the program as its all-time

assists leader with 21 while being second on the all-time scoring list with 83 points. She was a three-time All-SUNYAC selection and a two-time All-New York State player during her four-year career. Oneonta State finished the season with a school record 21 wins against one defeat and three ties and finished as the No. 1 team in the final NSCAA Div. III Coaches Poll after winning the national championship.

LACEY MUSSO EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS IN VOLLEYBALL

Senior Selected as an Honorable Mention

The Oneonta State womenʼs volleyball team received postsea-son honors during the Thanksgiving break from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Se-nior Lacey Musso (Wad-ing River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) received All-America honors after helping lead the Red Drag-ons to a 26-16 season. Musso earned her honor after being selected as a First Team New York Region All-American for a second consecutive year. Musso will graduate as one of, if not the most, honored volleyball players in the nearly 40-year history of the program. She is the all-time leader in career aces and is amongst the all-time leaders in assists and digs. Musso was a first team All-SU-NYAC selection for a fourth straight year this fall and was the East Division Co-MVP in 2002 after leading Oneonta to its first conference title and NCAA berth. Musso also received honors for her work in the class-room this fall being selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 1 Third Team. Her academic accolades include being selected to the SUNYAC Commissionerʼs List and All-Academic Team for the fall of 2001 and 2002. She is also a Peer Athletic Leader on campus.

Senior Jess Keller (Clinton, NY/Clinton) was honored this fall by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association as a Third Team All-American. This after helping lead the Red Dragons to its greatest season since 1990 while reaching the semifinals of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Tournament. Keller was a team

captain this fall and was a starting forward on Oneontaʼs 15-8 team. She was a First Team All-SUNYAC selection along with being named to the NYSWCAA All-New York State Team. She was a two-time Regional All-American and earned First Team honors this fall to be eligible for selection to the All-America Team. Keller finished as the teamʼs leading scorer with 23 points on 11 goals and one assist. She ended her career with 18 goals and four assists for 40 points in 74 games. “Iʼm very happy for Jess,” said head coach Michele Dombrowski. “She has worked extremely hard for four years and has been a tremendous team leader for our program. She has helped elevate our program into the next tier in our region.” Keller is only the fourth field hockey player in the his-tory of the program to be selected as an All-American and first since 1993.
