WOMEN’S SOCCER CAPTURES SUNYAC TITLESenior Christine Marra earns All-America honors
For the 10th consecutive year, the women’s soccer team earned a trip to the NCAA Div. III tournament. It was the program’s 11th overall NCAA berth as they won their ninth SUNYAC title in the last 10 years. With 16 freshmen added to the mix of outstanding veterans, the Red Dragons didn’t miss a beat in the conference, finishing 9-1 overall to win the regular season and earn the top spot in the SUNYAC tournament. After it was all said and done,
Oneonta completed its 13th consecutive winning season with an overall record of 14-6-2. The squad had four All-SUNYAC selections led by first-teamers Christine Marra (Thiells, NY) and Lindsey Brechbiel (Garnerville, NY). Junior Melissa vandenBurgh (Hopewell Junction, NY) and sophomore Erin Boyle (West Babylon) joined Marra and Brechbiel on the All-
Conference Team as third team selections. Marra and Brechbiel were also first and second team All-Region selections this fall. Marra’s season performance earned her SUNYAC Player of the Year honors and NSCAA Third Team All-American accolades. She started all 22 games this fall and scored seven goals while adding seven assists for 21 points. Marra’s selection as Player of the Year was the eighth time since 1998 that a player from Oneonta has earned the honor. Marra became the sixth player in the history of the women’s soccer program to earn All-American honors and marked the ninth consecutive year that a women’s player has been honored nationally as an All-American.

ONEONTA STATE MEN’S TENNIS TO JOIN NEAC AS ASSOCIATE MEMBER
Red Dragons eligible immediately for conference play
ONEONTA, NY - SUNY College at Oneonta Director of Athletics, Tracey Ranieri, announced earlier this fall that the men’s tennis program has been accepted as an associate member into the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC). With its membership, the team will be immediately eligible for conference play and the postseason tournament, which is scheduled for April 23-24 at Birchwood Tennis and Fitness Center in Clarks Summit, Pa. Without an automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III tournament in 2009, the NEAC tournament champions will be eligible for NCAA Pool B consideration this coming spring.
In the spring of 2010, the men’s tennis programs of the NEAC will affiliate with the North Atlantic Conference, bringing the membership to 11 schools. The NAC champion will be determined by a playoff between the divisional winners of the NEAC and NAC. During the three-year agreement amongst the two conferences, the NAC will not receive an automatic bid to the NCAA because of the two-year waiting period to earn an AQ. The first opportunity for the automatic bid to the NAC champion will be in 2012.
The five NAC schools that sponsor men’s tennis are Castleton State, Green Mountain College, Johnson State, Lyndon State and Thomas College of Maine.
As an associate member, Oneonta will be one of five teams in the NEAC that sponsor the sport of men’s tennis. The other four schools that will compete are Penn State - Berks, Penn State - Harrisburg, Keuka College and SUNY Cobleskill. In the spring of 2010, the NEAC will welcome Penn State – Abington as a sixth competing institution.
The men’s tennis program has not been affiliated with a conference since 1989 when the SUNYAC discontinued the sponsorship of the sport. The Red Dragons enjoyed many years of success as a member of the SUNYAC including winning eight conference titles. Oneonta won the SUNYAC Conference spring season championships in 1967 and from 1969-71 and in the fall seasons of 1972 & 1973, and 1976. Oneonta shared the conference title in the spring of 1972 with Albany.
Coming off another tremendous fall season where the Red Dragons compiled a dual-match record of 5-1, they are looking forward to the excitement and challenges of competing for a conference championship once again. The outlook has now become one of planning on qualifying for the NCAA Div. III tournament.
The men’s spring schedule will now include matches against its other four NEAC member schools along with a challenging non-conference schedule that includes St. Lawrence University, Rensselaer and Hartwick College. The two-day tournament is split between a team event on the first day of competition, which will determine the conference champion, and then holding an individual tournament the following day at each of the six singles and three doubles spots.
