Anointing of the Sick

Every first Saturday of the month starting

February 4, 2017, we will celebrate the

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at

the 12:05 PM Mass. “Is any sick among you? let him call for

the elders of the church; and let them pray

over him, anointing him with oil in the

name of the Lord.” James 5:14

JANUARY 29, 2017 4

From the Pastor’s Desk….

Our Lady of Altagracia (High Grace)

Every year, on January 21st, the Dominicans and Dominican Americans celebrate with great pride the

feast of the Virgin de la Altagracia, Protector and Queen of their hearts and of Santo Domingo. There

are historic documents that prove that in 1502, on the island of Santo Domingo, the Most Blessed Virgin

was honored under the title of our Lady of La Altagracia, whose portrait had been brought from Spain by

Alfonso and Antonio Trejo, brothers who were among the first European settlers of the island.

This year we were blessed to have with us his Excellency Héctor Rafael Rodríquez the bishop of La

Vega, Dominican Republic to celebrate a special Mass in honor of our Lady of Altagracia. The celebra-

tion was on Thursday, January 19th at 7PM. After the Mass, all the participants enjoyed more festivities

and Dominican food. We want to thank Bishop Héctor Rafael Rodriquez and all the organizers and

the volunteers for providing this opportunity to honor and grow in the love of our Blessed Virgin Mary,

our Mother.

The feast of Santo Niño (Infant Jesus) This past Sunday, St. Nick’s hosted a wonderful celebration of the Feast of the Sto. Niño (Infant Jesus).

The first statue of the Sto. Niño was brought to the Philippines in 1521. Filipinos have a special devotion

to the Sto. Niño and almost all have invoked and experienced His miraculous powers. More than 400

devotees from the tri-state area came to our Church to honor the Infant Jesus at the 3PM Mass! As part

of the celebration, there was the Sinulog, a special dance in honor of the Sto. Niño.

We are grateful to all the organizers and all who participated in this celebration. Our special thanks to

Fr. Jovito Carongay, the administrator of the Church of Ascension, Elmhurst, the various ministries,

and the reception coordinators. God bless you all and we pray that the Sto. Niño will continue to bless

our parish with joy and unity!

Jesus’ healing continues for us today: Healing comes through faith in the name of Jesus our healer. He extends his mighty hands and heals all

our diseases and infirmities. During the three years of His earthly ministry, Jesus healed so many people

who came to Him and nobody was refused. Now He continues His healing ministry through the Church.

Holy Mother Church cares for her people. I believe every parish has a list of those who are sick. They are

visited on a regular basis and every Sunday we pray for them during the Mass.

One of the seven sacraments is the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. We believe that the Sacra-

ment offers a special grace to the souls of those who are sick. If physical recovery is God’s will, so be it.

If not, then the person needs the grace and strength to bear the illness with dignity.

Starting February 4, 2017, and continuing on every first Saturday of the month we will celebrate the

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at the 12:05 PM Mass. Come and bring your family members to

receive the divine healing of Jesus.

God bless you!

Fr. John Francis
